No. He wasn't dead.

He wouldn't be able to pray if he was dead.

Nor would he be able to be saved or redeemed.
See post 378. But I guess it doesn't mean what it says either according to you.

A lot of debating and arguing with people who actually either have not read the bible, or to whom simply it has not been given to see what is plainly written.

They are experts without knowledge.

In the New Testament there is confusion among the various bible versions in the manner in which they translate or not the word Hades. There are many Bible critics who tell us the King James Bible is in error for translating the word Hades as Hell. Yet, as we shall see, the "scholars" are in total disagreement among themselves regarding this.

Luke 16:19-31 is the classic case showing the division that existed in hell before the resurrection of Christ from the dead. There we see the beggar Lazarus in Abraham's bosom being comforted and in contrast we see the rich man IN HELL being tormented. There was a great gulf fixed between the two sections dividing the righteous from the wicked.

The Greek word used here is hades - αδης. The King James Bible translated it as hell, while the NKJV and NASB have Hades.

A simple visit to the "Oxford Compact English Dictionary" would clear it up for all but the most rabid of ”scholars"! "Hades" is a proper noun for A MYTH!

The NIV is interesting in that it has variously translated this same word as "Hades -5 times, depths - 2 times, grave - 1 time; and as Hell only once and that is here in Luke 16:23!

Oh, but wait. Apparently that one time as "hell" in Luke 16:23 in the NIVs of 1973 and 1984 was one time too many. Now the late$t NIV revi$ion of 2011 has come out and they have now decided that this should "Hades".

The ESV likewise translates Luke 16:23 as "and in HADES, being in torment", yet they have inconsistently translated this same word as HELL in Matthew 16:18 - "the gates of HELL shall not prevail against it."

Hell itself is not the final state of the wicked. After the great white throne judgment we are told in Revelation 20:14 "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death."

Those who complain about this word being translated as "hell" should check out some other bible versions to see what others, who have just as much education as they do, have done with these passages.

oh that's a winner

goes real good with my post # 304

ad hominim attacks loose all credibility

and are actually just plain silly since this is a forum and y'all have no idea why or where or when people came to the conclusions that they have

that being said, Jonah did not actually die :giggle::whistle:

Nope. 41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

Jesus was speaking to unbelieving Jews...CONTEXT, ok?

that being said, I have no doubt those same words are still applicable to many today

but again, this is not a salvic issue so why rend your garments and put ash on your head?

the great was/is Jesus

do you suppose He will turn people away because they took the wrong side of whether or not Jonah actually died?

but he didn't die :geek::giggle:

Opinions...we all have one. And I posted tons of scripture that states otherwise. This topic is nothing to get angry about, not you. Just a study showing different view points.

you must have a very heavy Bible...:cautious:

The blood of animals could never take away sin. Just like the literal blood of the Son of man, Jesus could not. Jesus says clearly His flesh profits for nothing, zero .

Carnal, ceremonial as a shadow until the time of reformation. That time came two thousand years ago. The shadow disappeared

do you understand anything about the sacrifice of Christ?

this post indicates that you do not

you clearly have no conception of who Jesus is and what He accomplished

this is one of the most egregious posts from you yet

who has so blinded you, that you are so confused

I can't wait for the nonsensical answer

In what way? Rules always has exceptions.
so can we make an exception to murder?

God says do not kill

God says do not take His Name in vain

etc

I guess sin must be the exception to what God says

Of course not. I like discussing biblical matters with other brethren. I never get upset. I use all opportunities to grow in the word. Hopefully, that’s what others do as well.

Maybe you can answer this since many have not responded. What is the difference in the Hebrew Sheol, the Greek hades, and the KJV hell?

There is no remission of sins with out the blood , & Cain's sacrifice there was no Blood , That is why GOD didn't except Cain's sacrifice. Hebrews 9:22 tells us this .
I would offer. Corrupted flesh and blood is used to represent the mutual workings of the Father and Son. . as one work needed to complete our salvation and therefore establish the government of God. Loving authority + willing submissiveness = the peace of God that surpasses natural mans understanding. .

Even though the life of the flesh is in the blood .Blood without the spirit essence of life has nothing to offer . Literal blood without the Spirit of God as the breath has no use. Jesus said of his own flesh and blood it profits for nothing, zero. . . being corrupted.

It is the Spirit that gives birth to our new born again spirit. Jesus says his words are Spirit they quicken our souls as he works in us with us.

The sacrifice is a living suffering sacrifice. Blood with out life must be poured out so that it can return to the field of clay from where it was formed from. Just like the blood of Jesus The blood was poured out at the foot of the altar (the cross) to keep with the old testament law. .Again to show spirit life was given in jeopardy of ones own . God who is not a man as us cannot die.

In that way according to the parable in John 6 .It would seem the Holy Spirit uses the occasion to help build on a old testament parable. . comparing the spiritual understanding of the what I would call living gospel to one and the unseen to other, Or faith (the unseen) to faith (this unseen)

It can I beleive be seen according to the hermeneutic prescription 1 Corinthians 2:

Note . . . .(purple in parenthesis) by added comment as a opinion

1 Corinthians 2: 13;14 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual (unseen things of faith) things with spiritual.(unseen things offaith) But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: (unseen things offaith) for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually (unseen things of faith) discerned.

John six in regard to that parable. Drink the blood eat the flesh. It offended many of the disciples . They knowing the law forbid the drinking of blood. It must be poured out as the foot of the altar over and over they are remined in the Old testament. Many disciples walked away. Therefore not understanding the parable it remained a unsolved mysterious riddle. Peter was given the faith to understanding shown by his agreement that the corrupted flesh profits for nothing. Peter said: to whom can we go you have words of eternal life, words that work to create life.

To drink the blood and eat the flesh to one does bring new life over, over ,over and over. Catholics call it the Real Presence. literally in wonderment mysteriously eating and drinking wine, the blood of the grapes as if it was the literal Real blood of Jesus and the literal flesh of what they call Christ.

While the Jehovah witness forbid it even so much as refusing a blood transfusion. Both miss the gospel meaning found by comparing it spiritual understanding another parable

Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum. Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it? John 6:53- 60

Those who had faith like Peter did hear it. He might of compared its unseen understanding to another parable one found twice in the Old testament, as two witnesses.

There David is used to signify the Son of man, Jesus. An Old testament y type. David in a place of thirsting to hear the word of his father in heaven the Lord being in the land of the giants, the valley of Rephaim. David was imprisoned Bethlehem, the city of bread used to represent flesh . .desiring a taste for the gospel the water of the well by the gate again to represent Christ. . God sent three mighty men . Three to establish the end of the matter. Men or re-noun as sons of God .Giants of faith

Now three of the thirty captains went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim. And David was then in the hold, and the Philistines' garrison was then at Bethlehem. And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate! And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the Lord. And said, My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mightiest.2 Samuel 23:15 -19

Jesus with his Spirit life he gave it in jeopardy of Him and the Father the mutual work of God .

It's not a parable. Does not fit the definition of a parable. It is a true story that only the Son of God could relate.

For the cause of Christ
Roger

That I believe can be dismissed just by looking at the context. The rich man in that parable represents unbelief, faithless mankind. The one spoke of that builds bigger barns, called a fool. Rather than blessing his neighbor with the increase God gives they exchange it for worldly fame. The lust of the eye.

They have no faith needed seeking God. But rather seeking after workers with familiar spirits the same kind of idea another poster posted . When Saul went to the witch of Endor, its the context to that parable .

Same result the rich man to represent faithless mankind did not hear the law and the prophets (sola scriptura) the living, abiding word of God . Josiah performed or worked out those words as the Holy Spirit worked with him . It has nothing do with defining hell, the heart of the corrupted earth .

2 Kings 23:24 Moreover the workers with familiar spirits, and the wizards, and the images, and the idols, and all the abominations that were spied in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, did Josiah put away, that he might perform the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the Lord.

How would you say Matthew 12 takes away from the glory of Christ?
Did I state that?

I am not sure what you are asking, but do you think Matthew 12 supports the OP premise... I do not think so at all.

An analogy is typically not a point by point correlation and it does not have to be.

Matthew 12

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.”
39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.

- an evil and adulterous generation. Not willing to believe the words of Christ. A "prove you are the Christ" mindset. A "Win us over with a magic show" approach.
- Jonah spent three days and nights in the belly of the Fish (soul in Sheol as per Jonah 2) - yet when Jonah came out and preached, the city of Nineveh repented (of their sins people, don't forget that).
- Yet Jesus compares himself to Jonah (3 days and nights), yet saying one greater than Jonah is here - For Jesus has the greater ministry. He also prophesies that despite his death and resurrection (the Jonah sign) the people will not repent (The Jews rejected their Messiah).
- The men of Nineveh (Gentiles) will rise up at the last day and condemn the Jews who didn't believe. For a
gentile nation believed but the Jews didn't.
- The queen of the South will rise up in judgement - for she
being a gentile, travelled a long distance to sit at the feet of Solomon and hear his wisdom ---- yet we have here the King of the Jews, God in the flesh, who CAME TO the Jews (they didnt even have to travel far to meet him like the queen), yet they rejected Him. She too will judge the Jews in the last day.

Thanks I can try. Something I have been looking at.

The doctrine of hell begins in Genesis 4. It has to do with the curse in regard to the death of the first martyr Abel, as a witness of God.

Abel whose corrupted blood cries out from the corrupted heart of earth. It would seem Cain had plowed him under the corn field the fruit that God would not accept as a faith offering.. Cain performed that to support his deceitful heart as the pagan foundation . "Out of sight out of mind" .Instant gratitude. No faith needed. Cain deceiving himself as if God had not witnessed the whole event.

The curse caused the corruption the earth and therefore it did not produce fruit as previously allowing rest for the laborers. Being corrupted the heart of the earth used to represent a place that Abel cried out from . Like Jonas crying out from the belly of the whale three times in agony and three time was heard and comforted . It would be in a hope of the resurrection on the last day . You could say the heart of the earth like the human heart according to Cain again as the example has be come deceitful . Christ suffering for three days is a picture of Christ providing a way for Abel and any believer that followed . The drawing power to lift up the new creation to the new heavens and earth,

Cain is shown suffering a living hell with no rest (sabbath rest) and no promise of being lifted up as a marked man . You could 666 as sign of unbelief, no faith, no rest, no Jesus .
Well, but what you wrote seems to me man wisedom, but not found in the word. Means a verse where it is said, that Jonsh was in hell insteadt of the belly of the fish/whale.

Of course you can take it literally. It is a very specific person from the bible and a specific conversation.

Samuel was raised up from Abrahams bosom when Saul went to the witch of Endor. The real spirit of Samuel (not a demon in this instance). Because Samuel pronounced judgement on Saul that Saul and his sons would die the very next day (God's judgement). There are instances in the bible. So you need to rethink your theology.
He was not talking to Samuel , He was talking to Satan ,Do you not know that was one of the reason GOD says HE killed Saul , FOR trying to talk to the Dead . YOU can't talk to the dead , because the BIBLE says that they don't know anything , Ecc 9 :5 please read , GOD bless as HE sees fit
