I like how you speak of getting closer to Jesus. You are right about it being a relationship.
James 4
4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse [your] hands, [ye] sinners; and purify [your] hearts, [ye] double minded.
4:9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and [your] joy to heaviness.
4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
I know that there are many books out there that claim to be stepping stones toward a closer walk, but the only book that has ever profited me was the Bible. I like the Gospel of John. Also Ephesians. Prayer is definitely best, but as the verse above says, we need to seek Him.
You probably know the basics that God has shown us in His Word, but I'll mention them for the benefit of all who may be reading this; Jesus was there in the beggining with His Father. Jesus created the world, all that is in it, and Adam and Eve. They disobeyed and broke the close fellowship man had with God. Four thousand years later Jesus came to earth and paid the price to have things fixed. He paid it with His very own Blood. Now all we need to do is acknowledge this and completely surrender ourselves to Him. He loves us so much. We were created to have fellowship with Him. Please do not reject such great Salvation. You do not want to enter into eternity without Him. My favorite Bible verses are shown below in my signature.
