Is misunderstanding the doctrine of union with Christ the fundamental error of dispensationalism?

Does the doctrine of union with Christ render dispensationalist presuppositions invalid?

I am firmly convinced that misunderstanding or ignorance of the doctrine of union with Christ is the fundamental error of dispensationalism.

Abraham was promised many things by God.

The phrase "and his seed" is mentioned in some of these promises.

Galatians 3 indicates that the promises were made to the seed of Abraham, who is Jesus.

Galatians 3:16 16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ. (ESV)

The believer experiences a change in status when he is saved. He goes from being "in Adam" to being "in Christ". He is no longer associated with the sinful, condemned, spiritually dead man Adam but he is associated with the righteous, justified, spiritually alive man Jesus Christ.

As a result of this, he himself is in Christ. He is a spiritual descendant of Abraham.

Galatians 3:25-29 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.
(ESV)

Jews and Gentiles become one man in Christ, and comprise the church:

Ephesians 2:11-22 11 Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— 12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility 15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. 17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. (ESV)

As such, they are all heirs through Jesus Christ to an expanded inheritance, which includes all the earth and not just some land strip in Palestine:

Romans 4:13-18 13 For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. 15 For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression. 16 That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, 17 as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”—in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. 18 In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, “So shall your offspring be.” (ESV)

This is very simple to me. Union with Christ ties the promises of Abraham to the Church, which is the body of Christ, united with Him and with each other, and sharing in the promises due to this union.

So, it is my strong conviction that union with Christ decimates the fundamental premises of dispensationalism.

What is your thought on this? Can you clearly explain why the doctrine of union with Christ does not render dispensationalism incorrect?

I don't think either book mentions dispensationalism. However, I am strongly convicted that union with Christ decimates dispensationalist presuppositions. Additionally, I am strongly convicted that it is the most important doctrine of Scripture to understand, when it is understood in all its glory.

For those of you who don't know what the doctrine of union with Christ teaches, I am attaching a lesson that I prepared for a study group in this regard.

I would recommend the books I mentioned over this simple document though.

That is only one aspect of the Abrahamic covenant.

The *seed* of Abraham can mean several entities (depending on context) --

1. The descendants of Jacob/Israel
2. The nations which descended from Abraham
3. Christ
4. Believers

You picked one aspect and failed to see the other aspects because of your FALSE theology. Here is the truth (if you can handle it). The Abrahamic Covenant gave eternal blessings to Israel and the world

The Abrahamic Covenant – the covenant made by God with Abraham – is the most comprehensive covenant in the Bible, and it includes eternal blessings to both Israel, the Church, and the world.

1. The land of Israel for the children of Israel: In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates (Gen 15:18)

Many Christians hold to Replacement Theology – that the Church has replaced Israel, and that God has totally rejected Israel, but that is simply no true. The first promise to Abraham concerns the land of Israel, stretching from the Nile to the Euphrates. That is about ten times the size of modern Israel. And during and after the Millennium, this land will be occupied by the twelve tribes of Israel and revealed in detail in the prophecy of Ezekiel.

2. Abraham to be greatly multiplied:
And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. (Gen 17:2)

Abraham is shown to be the father of several groups in this covenant – (a) the Hebrews, (b) many nations and kings, (c) the ancestor of Christ, and (d) all those who are believers. As we see in Scripture, the Church itself has countless numbers. But in the future redeemed and restored Israel will also multiply exceedingly.

3. Abraham to be a father of many nations and kings: As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations... And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. (Gen 17:4,6)
4. Sarah to be a mother of many nations and kings: And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her. (Gen 17:15,16)

The descendants of Abraham include (a) the Israelites, (b) the Ishmaelites, (c) the Edomites, (d) the Moabites, (e) the Ammonites. This includes all the Jews and Arabs scattered over the Middle East and North Africa, and includes the following nations: Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, Yemen, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya.

5. God to be the God of Abraham and his descendants: And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. (Gen 17:7)

God brought this to the attention of Moses at the burning bush: Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God... And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. (Exod 3:6,13-15)

Jesus brought this to the attention of the unbelieving Jews several times: Jesus said to them, "Truly I tell you, before Abraham was, I AM. (John 8:58) Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. (John 8:56) And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err. (Mark 12:26,27)

6. Christ to be the Seed of Abraham to bless all nations: And the angel of the LORD [the pre-incarnate Christ] called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice. (Gen 22:15-18)

We see in the book of Galatians how Paul interprets Abraham’s seed to mean Christ: Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. (Gal 3:13-18)

7. Believers to be the heirs of Abraham through faith: Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed... But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. (Galatians 3:6-8, 22-29)
