Revelation 4:7; "And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle."

Ezekiel 1:10; "As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle."

Faces speaks of expressions, actions, moves............of what?

Some associate these 4 bests with the 4 Gospels written about Jesus (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John)
This can give us an idea of why there 4 Gospel books written about Jesus, rather than just one. Each author of these 4 books was coming from a different viewpoint about Jesus in his writing.
The 4 beasts are said to correlate to the 4 views of Jesus in the Gospels.

I Revelation 4:7 we see what the beasts are "The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle."

The Gospel according to Matthew is said to be represented by the Lion. A lion most often represent royalty, and even today is often seen as a 'king' to animals. This Gospel contains a genealogy of Jesus from Abraham, through the line of King David. It is presenting his right to David's throne.

The Gospel according to Mark is said to be represented by the calf (also referred to as an ox. This shows Jesus as a servant to humanity, as an ox is. There is no genealogy found, but instead the book starts with Jesus' baptism, and his ministry. This was his service while on earth.

The Gospel according to Luke is said to be represented by the man. Luke portrayed Jesus as human. The genealogy in this book was traced back to Adam, showing Jesus was indeed a man, although completely perfect unlike the rest of us.

The Gospel according to John is said to be represented by the flying eagle. This book portrayed the divinity of Christ more than any of the other 3, even beginning by explaining that The Word was with God, was God, and became flesh. The eagle is seen as one of the most majestic birds, being able to fly at great heights.

I have more that relates to the 4 Gospels, but what I put was the only part relevant to the beasts. I can add more later if anyone is interested.

That is so interesting. I had never seen that. You may have something there. We know there are different types for the lion...such as Jesus is the lion from the tribe of Judah. Satan is said to roar as a lion....seems to be five different types of lions in scripture.

The ox from one point could be different types of meanings....they were used as one of the animals sacrificed in the temple. The Hindus worship cows so this could also be a pagan symbol.

But I'm so glad to hear these different views here. Who knows maybe God is opening up to us things we never saw before.

My question would be though, as referring to the beasts seen in revelation.
Why would something representing Satan be pictured in that scenario?
And, why would a Pagan symbol be represented there?
Considering that we know this was to be a vision of something connected to heaven, it doesn't seem logical.

As well as I think someone mentioned in Ezekiel they were also called Cheribum. I don't remember Satan ever being called anything like that, except in reference to before he fell from heaven.

As for the calf/ox being an animal sacrifice, I have thought of that. Even if that was so instead of a service animal, it would be similar representation. Jesus was still serving humanity when He died as our sacrifice.

this is a very hard one vjr. these beasts are around Gods throne:
the one that ezekiel saw had 4faces and 4wings. in rev ch4 had one face and 6wings.
and they all had eyes:it represents spirits.

Yes Wake-up I was just thinking of that lately. The ones in Revelation go around the throne of God but the ones in Ezekiel came out of a whirlwind (four winds would be a twister...tribulation...Rev.7:1; "And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree."

Ezekiel 7:1,2; "Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, (2) Also, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord God unto the land of Israel; An end, the end is come upon the four corners of the land."

MusicClover123,

That is a good question. The bible seems to have layers of different meanings. We just have to peal back the onion and try to see what it is telling us. Yes, they are called Cheribum but it does say in Ezek. 1:5; "....Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures..........." In other words they were the opposite it seems from the ones in Rev. in that these in Ezek. are given fleshly apperances....

They had the likeness of man
Had four wings.........which could mean two sets (Daniel 7:4 speaks of wings (eagles wings?)on the lion that was plucked off then he was able to stand up as a man....) Ezekiel 7:9; also speaks of the wheels.....
If this is speaking of two sets of wings that would be taken off of a person than that person stands up...didn't Nebuchadnezzar also stand up after awhile...he too took on the appearance of a bird....
I believe this is speaking of groups of people ....three groups. Babylon is divided into threes...When Revelation says to come out of her Rev.18:4...one group does come out and is standing..(bible says to stand) but the other two group are left.....
Zechariah 13:8 and Ezekiel 5:1-5.

Maybe the Lord will open up to us more of this understanding.........

Excellent summary. You are a faithful servant of the Word of God. God bless you!
