2 Corinthians 12:7-9
[7] And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. [8] For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. [9] And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

I am not sure the thorn at pauls side is the best way to provide evidence of the enemy but whether it is a physical or spiritual attack he doesn't need to do anything directly. Now ehether he is still locked up for a thousand years or not he usually tends to copy God. God more than anything uses his followers rather than direct action and in the same way the enemy uses his followers minions and demons to do the same.
in the same way that God indirectly works on this earth so does the devil but pysical, spiritual mental emotional there is all kinds of ways he attacks even and especially those with the holy spirit. There is truth to the train of thought that if the enemy is attacking you must be doing something right

Read 1 Cor 2:14 and tell me how a person who has not been born again, with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and cannot discern the things of the Spirit, even thinking them to be foolishness, can obey the spiritual gospel? It further says, "neither can he know them, because they (the gospels) are spiritually discerned.

God tells us that "as many as he loves, he rebukes and chastens" (Rev 3:19). You claim that God loves the whole world of mankind, if so, then it stands to reason that, in your interpreting of things, that God rebukes and chastens the whole world of mankind.
Have you read Psalms 73? Where David was envious at the foolish, when he saw the prosperity of "the wicked" (a part of mankind). David says in verse 5, "They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they [PLAGUED] (Greek interpretation=divinely punished) CHASTENED.

Yes we are protected but we are also told to put on the full armor of God for a reason. We may have the holy spirit and may have his protection but doesn't mean the enemy is unable to attack us. He loves to use more than anything the mental attack, doubt fear worry stress anxiety sadness depression anger impatience all these things are basically the main way he attacks and we all deal with this to a degree and some more than others. My depression issues make it where I always have to have my armor on filling myself with his love peace grace patience and all the fruits of the spirit because if I let my guard down the attacks come and believe me they can be strong.
He loves this tactic for two reasons the first being it is the most effective and the second is because it is an attack from the flesh. Our minds naturally produce these things and so it is easy to use and to break using things that naturally occur from the flesh now think of all the fruits of the spirit and what the mind produces in opposite of those.
