I have heard leaders talk about this, but I can't quite remember what they said. I am approaching a possible relationship at the moment, and I need to figure out what my viewpoint is on praying together. I remember at one point I was against it, but I am not so sure now.

What is your viewpoint? Should a couple pray together? When is it appropriate and when is not? Is it appropriate to pray together when one is struggling with something and the other says a quick prayer to help? Or can that start up ties that are premature?

I know my stand before was against it because my relationship with God is verry intimate and opening the door for a man to join in that intimacy before marriage is dangerous. But is there a way to allow simple prayers that don't cross an intimacy line or will it always lead to such? I'm not talking about blessing the food, but say I'm hurting because I was betrayed by a friend, and he wants to pray for the friend together?

I'm talking about one-on-one times here, not at church at the alter praying for people or praying with other friends.

I love it when I pray with my girlfriends. There is a definite bond shared in it and we become closer and more trusting. I'm afraid that praying with him may turn out to be not-so-innocent in the long run and cause feelings to rise out of control.

We have agreed to many other standards that are not so conventional. We desire to save our first kiss for marriage, and a no-touch relationship until engagement. We take precaution to always have accountability and support from our loved ones and be honest with them about what we are struggling with. Our goal is to be sober in our relationship emotionally so that we don't become blinded with feelings. Don't get me wrong, feelings are necessary and good, but they also need to be controlled with wisdom and not allowed to make decisions. I don't want to be blinded again toward what God has.

What is your viewpoint on praying together and why?

I can't watch it unless I download a plugin and the source for the plugin looks untrustworthy. The article besides is directed toward prayer in marriage which is NECESSARY! I'm talking about before marriage. I thought I made that clear. Praying with one's spouse is very very important, but this man is not my husband, and I don't want to do anything with him prematurely. Please re-read my post.

I think after you've established a serious commitment with him, you can pray together if you want.

When I think about it, it's almost the same as praying with a parent or your other friends, he just happens to be on a higher friend level. But I understand your feelings, you can't just let anyone into your relationship with God but it's his relationship too and no one can really into your relationship with God. It's the two of you communicating with God together.

If you do decide to pray with him, I think it'll give you a better insight on some things for the future and you can talk about prayer styles and other things associated with prayer (I guess you can do this even if you don't pray with him).

Once a relationship takes a serious turn it's necessary to pray together regarding decisions that need to be made by and for the two of you (where two or more agree...). You are absolutely right when you say that it's intimate. Our relationship with Christ is intimate, but the relationship that we enter into with a man AND God is also intimate, even without the precious physical aspect. Two becoming one means so much more than consummation.

Can't even begin to tell you the impact it has on children when they see their parents praying together and even join in. If a godly marriage, home and family is your heart's desire, I can't imagine anything that can bring that about more than submitting yourselves to one another in prayer before God.

But, if the relationship is not a serious one, I can see how it might be uncomfortable to share something as intimate as your time with the Lord though.

Your heart shows in your words, Rissa. Trust it. :)

I'm going on personal experience here. But I'd say pray together as soon as possible. Maybe not over serious matters or on too deep a level, but over stuff in general.

I've met too many girls who can put on a great act about how they love God and such, but when pressed to do anything remotely spiritual, true colors come shining through. So pray together right away. It could save you a lot of time!

You don't need to pray at some deep serious level. On the other hand if you defer this stuff, you're not going to know what's in that person spiritually either.

Hm. Besides praying for the meal, I don't know how praying cannot get deep. I don't care much for superficial prayers that seems to be just asking for stuff and saying amen.

And aren't I supposed to be able to tell what's in his heart spiritually by the way he treats people in different circumstances? God is love, and we only get love from Him, so if he has not love, then he has not God: love in the sense of Corinthian love. Not perfect, but striving.

Plus if a girl/guy won't pray with you on a certain level, it shows they may not be taking you very serious anyways. I dunno, it's just a touchy subject for me. When a girl won't simply pray with me, it really makes me think they're hiding something or not taking things serious. So if they're hiding something or not taking the potential 'relationship' serious, then why spend time with em in the first place?

I hear what you're saying but I strongly disagree.

If you don't view the guy on a serious enough level to at least pray with him, then what ya doin with him in the first place?

This is the confounding thing I see with some Christian women. They say they want a guy who will lead. Yet if he jumps in head first and says lets pray together, well..........yeah.

Just one of those things I don't get.

Stilly, we are in the stage right now of deciding whether a relationship is God's will right now. The man showed interest, we talked, and now are taking 30 days away from each other to pray for God's direction. His intentions are to see whether we are compatible for marriage. This is quite a serious matter. Neither of us are out to date just to date. My intention here in figuring out whether praying together is right or not is to keep us from getting on a premature intimate level. I want to figure out where the line needs to be drawn.

I hear ya. I don't mean to sound pushy. It's just how I think things should be done. And I have strong feelings about it. So please don't view what I say as some attempt to be pushy.

I don't, Stilly. It's your opinion and I thank you for it. I want to see from both sides and for each to be elaborated.
