Shortly after becoming a Christian I read in the Gospel of Matthew 24:35 'Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away' and whilst on many occasions I have fallen short of the glory that is God and have repented I have continued to believe until this day that Jesus' words in the Gospels are sacrosanct and unchangeable.

I am aware that scholarly debate occurs with possible errors in translation being used for any declared variation but the essence of Jesus' message remains succinct throughout. I used to wonder why there seems to be a delight by some to prune the beautiful blooms of Christ's message and I suppose one reason is to make them better fit the finite understanding of humankind, whilst another is pride in scholarship. Also I read in Proverbs 18: 2. A fool takes no pleasure in understanding but only in expressing an opinion, which also seems an appropriate description of some output and certainly whilst one is nit-picking one can take some comfort in the uncertainty thus created.

There is a real tendency both within and without religions to place the needs of humankind at the centre of events and this is seen with both divorce and abortion to name but two which result from humankind's weakness and perceived needs to make either desirable or necessary but God's commandments forbid both and that should be made clear.

Christ told us to live the absolute ethic right now but also pointed out that we must render unto God that which is God's and to Caesar that which is Caesar's and it is the Christian churches' task to spell out to Christians that which belongs to which. Unless the yardstick of righteousness remains unchanged then no real and lasting measuring of either right or wrong can be made in which case when 'wrong' becomes 'right' then how can it be possible for the adherents to the changes to repent and seek forgiveness.

Christ's warning that whilst Heaven and earth shall pass away but His words will not, means that we, as Christians, water them down at our peril and this is clearly indicated to us in His parable of the Rich man and Lazarus. Clearly repentance will not be possible once we have died.

Abortion is a very touchy subject, for example would you abort a baby that has no limbs, we have to think about that person's future too and how hard it will be for them. Babies go straight upto God, i am not saying we should always abort but we should weight the pros and cons for the child to be born. If the baby is Okay in every way then O Yeah! i would keep it.

The Bible never specifically addresses the issue of abortion but there are numerous teachings in Scripture that make it abundantly clear what God’s view of abortion is. In Jeremiah 1:5 it tells us that God knows us before He forms us in the womb and Psalm 139:13-16 speaks of God’s active role in our creation and formation in the womb. However, each individual when faced with such a difficulty must reach a decision regarding the sanctity or otherwise of life. As I am by no means without sin I wouldn't dream of casting the first stone on the subject but as each and every one of us is made in the image of God then to destroy a life is to destroy one of God's miracles and that must be a very serious business indeed. Much is made in the media today about human rights whilst in the case of the WHO's calculations whereby every year in the world there are an estimated 40-50 million abortions (many for cosmetic purposes) which corresponds to approximately 125,000 abortions per day the unborn seem to have little say in the matter. In the USA, where nearly half of pregnancies are unintended and four in 10 of these are terminated by abortion, there are over 3,000 abortions per day. In the great scheme of things would a physically imperfect child brought up in a loving, caring environment prefer not to have been born. In this world where sin is endemic perhaps the best we can do is as Jesus outlined why Moses permitted divorce (Matthew 19. 3-12) and that is because our hearts are hard. Abortion appears to have fallen into the same category. Sad but true.

I believe that scripture does speak of abortion, not directly, but clearly.

In Genesis 1:11-12 the "kind" is in the seed. At the moment of conception nothing but nourishment must be added to the fetus. It is man-"kind". Then, turning to Genesis 25:23 we learn that not only are people in the womb, but all their offspring. It reads; "And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger."

John Baptist, "greatest of men born to a woman was; "... filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb." (Lk.1:15). And in Luke 1:41-42 we see that not only is the Spirit of God furnishing the fetus, but that there consciousness of divine things there.

Turning to the most documented birth of the Bible, that of the Man Jesus, He is given His human name BEFORE conception (Lk.1:31, 2:21). In Luke 1:42 the fetus was blessed still in the womb. In Genesis 3:15 it is the "seed" of the woman that is foreordained to conquer a mighty angel. And in His inheritance both as King of the Jews and King of kings, Jesus is HEIR already as SEED of Abraham long before His birth.

Returning to Genesis 1:11-12, if everything that has seed produces its KIND, then a fetus is man-KIND. And man-KIND is made in the image and likeness of God and a blow against it is a blow against God (Gen.9:5-6). The immediate results of this should the death penalty. But God does not wink at such a grave insult to Him. He might wait for the judgment seat, and then His promise in Isaiah 66:24 and Mark 9:43-48 will be brought to bear - for eternity future. God is not mocked. He will not "clear the guilty".

And finally, if what is written above is correct, then the abortionists have done another great disservice to men. The shedding of innocent blood curses the land - just as Abel's blood did before Law and Israel did after it was given (Gen.4:11; Nu.35:33). The abortionist are, with other murderers, responsible for thorns, thistles, pestilences, drought and crop failures.

I've almost completed the race and now patiently await the call. Over the years I've grown ever closer to God through Christ and to paraphrase Augustine, after having faith in that which I did not see I now have the rewards of faith and see and understand things much more clearly but I still know only in part. When with God I will know all things and when judgement time comes I wonder just how my forgotten and therefore unrepented sins in my long life will be revealed to me. Just a thought.
God bless you,
Derek
