I am not completely sure what you are trying to say above?
What is clear from the verses you quote is that that one group was not doing good deeds and they did not make it! There was another group who was doing good deeds and they did make it into heaven.
But I do not think that everyone who gives food to the hungry and hands out clothes will be in heaven. But the one who does it out of faith in Jesus will be rewarded with heaven.
I think the ones in verse 35 had faith and works together. But you are right that Jesus here says it was because of their deeds ("for I was") that they will inherit the kingdom. Jesus has no theological problem saying it was because of their works.

Gods children do works. There is no maybe they do them or they may lose salvation if they do not do them they do them. It might not be what you think they ought to do but that’s between them and god

I believe Jesus want to say the tree tell by the fruit. If you have faith in Jesus or abide in Jesus you Will bear good fruit, killing is not the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

If you read that passage you cited, you will notice when the saints answer that the saints had no idea about doing works when they were doing it. So it isn't something they did consciously. Or otherwise they would go "oh, you mean back then, Jesus, when we gave such and such good and water to our neighbors, yes we obeyed because we love you".
But why is it that they don't know it?

Say you have plenty of food and water, the poor thirsty ask water

So it's not the works we know of or try for (trying to accumulate merit before God) that Jesus wants, but the works we do not know about is what He likes (those proceeding from our new born inner man).
So why some focus on the works that we know of and we do?
That's why the whole insisting on works and constantly inspecting works is pointless, we will never accumulate merit Jesus is all the merit one can get, and we already received Him. In the end of the day after working in the vineyard everyone got the same coin, eternal life.
Warnings are only worth as signs on the side of the road, not to stray into a bad road, but we are made perfect in love as we go.
We need to focus on Jesus, and as our faith grows stronger we decrease and Jesus increases in us.
We don't need to strive in works anymore, just to surrender to Jesus and works will match up, the Spirit was given abundantly.
