just replying to the opening Post, without reading all of the responses =

hub and I don't know or have read of any scriptural evidence that points to that 'fact'...
BUT, the High Priest was 'commanded' to wear very 'specific garments', and to
'tie a rope around the ankle would be 'adding' to The Word of God',
which He specifically Commands us NOT TO DO!!!
DEAU. 4:2.
You shall not add unto The Word which I command you, neither shall you diminish ought from it,
that you may keep The Commandments of The LORD your God which I command you.

Exodus 28 all the instructions for the High Priest's 'dress code'

found this interesting:

35Aaron must wear the robe whenever he ministers, and its sound will be heard when he enters or exits the sanctuary before the LORD, so that he will not die.

the sound assured he would not die?

no rope though
or -- which makes much more theological sense to me -- the robe. he would die if not for the garment God instructed to be made and sanctified.
to briefly explain why this is theologically more reasonable to me: in the same way that the LORD made garments for Adam & Woman, replacing the ones they had made for themselves. these things are symbolic; they testify of Jesus, as He said the scripture does.
we must also '
put on Christ' because without Him there is no salvation

Did they tie a rope around the High Priest Ankle before he went into the Holy of Holies in case he died they could pull him out?
Whoever invented this myth was probably thinking about giving someone "enough rope..."

According to Jewish history, many of the priests and high priests became quite corrupt before the coming of Christ. So they could have used that rope effectively on themselves.

That's what happens when sermons focus on pointless literal details (they say the Devil is in the Detail) instead of the substance and essence of the Biblical stories. Tomayto, Tomahto. Potayto, Potahto. The point is they're the edible fruit or vegetable we want. And, that's all that matters. Thanks be to God.
i think partly why this is the situation is that we have this traditional format of church in which all of the expectation is on exactly one person in the congregation to teach the whole flock at least once and commonly three times every week -- so we have a class of people in the church about whom everyone in the flock is under the impression will have a constant stream of things to teach everyone else, while everyone else just 'spectates' until a handful of them one way or another take up the same vocation - with the expectation then being that they will go start their own church somewhere else and be the only person in some other congregation with things to teach and admonish everyone in it, and doing so constantly.

so we have all the spiritual wisdom supposedly concentrated in one or a small handful of individuals. that person is maybe not given revelation and inspiration 3 times a week, but they have to have a sermon prepared anyway -- everyone is depending on them because church isn't about being involved ((other than standing up at the proper time and joining in the organized singing)), church is about attending a rehearsed pageantry. what does this preacher do when he has nothing to talk about? he scours resources for prefabricated sermon ideas. so there's a market for that -- for pre-fab sermons. and where there's a market, there's fluff to fill shelves with, things with little substance or necessity, but possibly enough impulse buys to make them worthwhile. in terms of sermons desperate pastors purchase ((yes there really are places selling sermons to desperate pastors -- happy googling)) -- that means filler material. there's a market for it, so people produce it. that's how we get sermons focused on pointless details, IMO -- at least it's a major contributing force in their propagation.

who makes these weird things up and puts them in sermons?!

I have probably heard the helicopter one loads of times. (you must have heard that one if you've attended any church)
That wasnt in the Bible either...yet it still gets trotted out by people piously trying to imply Gods helping you really by sending helicopters but you are just ignoring Him.

Or the one about you are robbing God if you dont tithe money.

I'm sure God had reasons for all of it. Put on Christ does tie in but I wonder what the High Priest was thinking

Jesus is our covering before His Father

This is interesting since I had that logged away and didn't ever read or really think about it.

Sudden death in scripture is something that interests me and this was a part of that, but rarely (if ever) did it factor in to anything important. Almost sounds like an old wives tale somehow.

The scapegoat thing isn't a myth too right?

Praise God for the churches that have pastors/leaders of the flock that actually preach from The Bible. Have been to churches where the sermon was given by reading from a prompter, tablet, or a bunch of notes. As you said, pre-fab material....
