I was just joking with a friend and her husband about how long it takes to straighten our hair with all of this RAIN and after a few minutes, like all men, he was rolling his eyes. J But he admitted that if he wanted a beautiful wife, he knew there were certain sacrifices he had to make. Haha (very generous, huh? ;) )

And I know there will be lectures about vanity posted (whatever…), but let’s get real…if you’re dating or wanting to, appearance matters. So, here’s the question, how much time and effort to you put into your appearance (hair/nails/working out)? Do you think it matters? Do you notice a difference in the attention you receive from the opposite gender when you do/don’t? Fess up, people! BUT!!!! If you are a guy, please do not tell me you get man manicures..I'll totally lose respect for you! haha J

you should take care of your body its not yours really. its just on loan from God, its suppose to be God's temple. and if you don't look after God's possession it will probably make Him upset. I'm not saying be vain but remembering to eat, bathe, relax and praise God for all His blessings is a good idea. :)

LOL when I bother I'm doing it for my husband or think of it as "showing off God's creation" ;)

and I hear my husband say " A poor excuse is better than none" in the background lol.

I havent spent a lot of my time single since before I was14, but I do remember washing my face a lot as I had severe acne in my teens and I didnt want acne scars. 95% of my friends then and now are male so I don't really have to do much to get their attention. When guys have told me that they like me (despite my crooked teeth, slight lisp, a few acne scars and partial hair dye regrowth), theyve all said the same thing, that Im funny, honest and compassionate with huge blue eyes.

Yes, I own one eyeliner, hair straightners and one compact and multiple sunscreen lip balms. Apart from the lip balm I probably use the makeup and straightners only a few times a year for special occaisions and only very minimally.

So I don't mind doing a little bit of prettying up but I really hardly bother focusing any time on my appearance other than the basics of daily showers, deoderant, sunscreen and keeping my hair clean and brushed.

I'm MISTER ADORKABLE and I refuse to say how much time I invest in looking as good as I do in my avatars and on cam. Sorry to disappoint ;)

...but, you somehow have to adjust your appearance according to what you assume people will like, right? Who picks what is attractive? I, for one, am turned off by what a whole lot of other people say is attractive...

Might want to know your intended audience.

No, not really. I am who I am, you know? I have very fair, sensitive skin, so I can't wear a lot of makeup and I can't tan like other girls. If guys are into tans and a lot of makeup, I'm not to to start doing that because I know it would damage and age my skin. I do wear eyeliner, mascara, and lip gloss most days. Occasionally I will wear powder and blush, but I just don't like that stuff clogging up my pores...feels..dirty.

I take time with my hair because I don't want to cut it and I get bored wearing it the same way all the time, but if I'm having a bad day it's definitely ponytail time.

My one concession to true girliness is my finger/toenails. If I'm quiet in chat or don't answer right away, I'm probably painting one or the other...nothing crazy though. My office is rather conservative. We aren't even permitted to go without hose at work. :)

I do work out because it makes me feel better, it's important to my safety at work and because I want to be able to teach dance for as long as possible.

Well. It entirely depends on what I'm doing. If I'm just going to go work for someone for a day, its pretty basic (Shower, Teeth, Maybe Shave, deodorant)

I don't have a really good workout routine YET but by the end of the month I will. Plus or minus 20 pounds around 200 doesn't bother me too much. I can get obsessive about it for all the wrong reasons and I don't want to be like that.

But if I'm staying home or there is a remote possibility of having to look presentable, I usually spend a little more time doing the basics + maybe using a real Razer instead of an electric one or playing with my hair a little. (no products) I naturally smell pretty good, or so I've been told. I don't worry too much about what people think as long as I'm being honest with myself.

In my younger days I was pretty prideful about working out and keeping up appearances.

That is a conservative office. That would take some getting used to for me. I go with bare legs with my dresses and skirts unless its an outfit where you where a knee length skirt and boots and tights. (I know I lost all the guys on that last sentence...but thats ok ;) ) LOL

LOL, Grace! I LOVE my weekend sundresses and sandals..jeans and sneakers. :)

Having worn a uniform for so many years, my first day on the job I wore a very conservative black suit with slacks because I wasn't sure what to expect. About halfway through the day I heard a founding partner say something about one of the staff "not wearing socks"...couldn't believe it. :)

Well, you get it then, a lot of women don't...Not that I want to fire up the will-never-die makeup thread or anything, but most women wear too much.

FYI, I'm the same way when I wear hose at work...

After I heard the news, the first person I wanted to ask about it was you. How's everyone doing in NY?

This is a good one. I think we should all take care of ourselves the best we know how but that doesnt give us an excuse for vanity. If you are spending lots of time preparing for the day, that is very wasteful all for the sake of beauty. Think of all the other things you could have done.

Clothing - I pretty much dress the same no matter where I go, work, church, shopping outing with friends and family. A dress or skirt, flats or sandals.
Makeup - don't really wear make up. Only on rare occasions like maybe to a formal event
Hair - Well hair is a big one for me. I am really into this natural thing. I have lots of thick curly hair and I absolutely love it. My hair can be very time consuming because I have so much. But lately I have been spending about 10-15mins putting it up at night and it only takes about 5 mins to take it down and finish styling in the morning. I don't straighten my hair too often because it takes about 1.5hrs and it only stays for a couple of days. (I also have this issue with black women always wanting straight hair and rarely going natural but thats a whole nother topic.)

I also desire someone who is going to be a ttracted to me in my natural state. Not all dolled up and glamerous. Because when the makeup is off and the hair is in a sloppy bun what if he doesnt like what he sees then. Its kind of deceptive don't you think.

JULES, I haven't seen NYC this fired-up, this proud, or this patriotic since the week of 9-11 itself. Hundreds of random people walking the mean streets with their flags up there in the sky, going to precincts and firehouses and randomly high-fiving cops and firemen or giving them a thumbs up as they drove by... maybe not entirely and probably never so, but there was SOME sense of closure today. And at least now when I go to Ground Zero I can look at the footprints of the Twin Towers and say 'Told ya we'd never forget.' ;)
