hello, im a christian mother of two boys, and our faith plays a big part in our family life. The boys love church thankfully! was wondering if there are other like minded parents who still spank out there, or for those who dont how they do discipline?

I hear you. Maybe it differ from child to child. We tried to set the boundaries at an early age and it seems to work.... for now. We also only have one which make it a lot easier :)

I'm no parent, but I was raised being spanked. And it wasn't often. I believe few understand it's intent and how to do so properly. Many tend to use it as a way to vent, rather than a way to discipline. And still yet some overuse it for discipline. Or even justify abuse by using it.

The show Supernanny, if you can find it anywhere, was full of useful ideas for non-physical discipline. And was quite effective.

Really, though, i feel discipline is less necessary when parents are doing Their job right first. But most parents don't want to be bothered being a parent and only care about getting the child to obey, right now, rather than teaching them how to act with a long term consideration for their child.

And as we've seen on this site some view discipline as an act of obedience, that is to say they focus more on discipline and obedience than love and support. Which is backwards. If your parenting foundation is discipline and not love, the discipline will fail.

But I must admit I do find it suspect when people show up on this site with a focus on discipline and seeking others with a like mind on the topic. More often than not there is an over emphasis on it. It's an odd thing to seek out as a basis for connection with others.

This is a bit of a controversial topic. I agree.

Can confirm spanking taught me that it hurts and I didn't like being hurt, but it by no means instilled better behavior. It actually was the spur that encouraged me to just find more clever ways to not get caught.

Real Biblical discipline is wisdom. How often does Proverbs tell us to be wise? Real change comes from the heart. Instill in your children's heart the wisdom of the Bible and you won't ever have to spank them. It can be done, I've seen parents do it.

Yeah for sure my friend. The thing is my mother had 5 children. I think corporal punishment helped her to keep us in line because my dad was on the road a lot.

I can tell you now I sat still in church because my mother would correct my behavior if I didn't.

My kids are 2, 5 and 6.

Spanking only worked from age 1.5 to about age 3. It doesn't affect them enough to stop their behavior. Of course, I do not do it like my parents did using a belt or ruler. After age 3 they hate time out and taking objects away from them. So we currently do that.

That is the problem. If they don't feel it you are creating a scenario where you are playing a game with them.

I don't spank my son often anymore but when I had to do it, he knew I was serious.

Shoot they feel it but they know it is only temporary. I have tough kids.

ive helped many parents use it more effectively on older kids..

do you give 'spanking clinics'?

seriously, what's up with all the spanking? do you turn them over your knee or what?

I would not recommend spanking teen agers for sure. talk about resentment forming

young children and then not too hard. plenty of other ways to discipline and why on earth are you spanking, in your words, often?

that's really not answering what I asked. kids are children. little human beings. and very sensitive for the most part

how about answering what I actually asked? I would really like to know

in particular, what do you mean by 'ive helped many parents use it more effectively on older kids..'

that is what I meant by 'spanking clinics', spanking is not a command in scripture
