My entire family besides maybe me practice Mormonism (LDS: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints). But they also consider themselves to be Christian. But there are a lot of discrepancies in their belief that don't seem to align with Jesus's teachings.

I basically wrote this to get biblically sound doctrine from anyone that knows about this group. Either for it or against it (trying not to be biased). But I personally dont believe that it is true Christianity. I left this "religion" when I was 18 years old.

What is your stance on this?

I don't have a "stance", I have a position based in scripture, I don't believe Mormonism lines up with scripture, as well as the added Book of Mormon, we are guided to not add or take away from the scripture He has provided, the Holy Bible.
best wishes

Greetings Danielwarby!

First, I am sorry to hear that your family are Mormon's, for they are not in Christ. Below is the reason why.

First, Mormon doctrine teaches and believes that Jesus is just a created being and the spirit brother to Satan. So, regardless of any other scriptures that they may attempt to quote, that one stops them in their tracks as far as their belief being legitimate. For this is what the word of God has to say about Christ:

"The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross."

"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."
Note: Immanuel means, 'God with us.'

God the Father himself refers to His Son as God:

But about the Son he (the Father) says,

“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing you with the oil of joy.”
He also says,

Jesus created all things:

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
You will roll them up like a robe;
like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,
and your years will never end.”

There are many other examples, such as when Jesus told the Jewish leaders "I and My Father or One." They picked up stones to stone Him and said "We are not stoning you for any good work," they replied, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God."
So the Jews knew the claim that Jesus was making by claiming that He and the Father are One.

Again, after Jesus resurrected, He appeared to the ten apostles behind closed doors, but Thomas was not present. Then the disciples told Thomas that the Lord had resurrected and appeared to them, but he did not believe them and said, "Unless I see the nail marks in His hands, and put my finger where the nails have been, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe.” The next week Jesus appeared to them again and said to Thomas "Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe! And Thomas said, "My Lord and My God!" And the Lord replied “Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. Those who have not seen but yet believe, is us who believe that Jesus is God in the flesh.

There are many, many more examples of Jesus' divinity, but these examples should suffice.

So, the bottom line is, Mormon's are stopped right at the door because they believe that Jesus is not God in the flesh, but just a created being. Therefore, there is no reason to debate about any other scriptures with them. They have the wrong Jesus!

Most here will not be in support of Mormon teachings, and rather find it a cult.
Both Catholic and Mormon attempt to tie themselves to the title of Christian, inexplicably, yet clearly fall quite short.

I kinda figured that. I just never truly understood what they thought. Thank you. Lol.

I admire the Mormons in the same way I admire the Jews. They are an orderly, business-savvy, moral people who build clean, safe cities. There is definitely a strong in-group preference among them (they can spot someone outside their faith community a mile off and it causes some discomfort), but this preference also makes them, on the whole, admirable parents who pass their traditions down to their kids. If the United States dies off, the Mormon enclaves will remain a separate and, eventually, prosperous country of their own.

This is a somewhat controversial opinion, but I think Douglas Wilson's church in Moscow, Idaho is somewhat influenced by a cultural Mormonism, both as a reaction to it and an adaptation of the Church's finer qualities. When folks wonder at what he's doing out there, I'm immediately reminded of what I've witnessed firsthand throughout Colorado and Utah.

As such, it grieves me to say all consistent Mormons are going to Hell according to Scripture. I've read the Book of Mormon and it's most assuredly a cult that has matured its way into a separate religion overtime. Their view of sin, Christ, and the afterlife is a hodgepodge of different heresies. My hope is that enough missions work is done in their area of the country to bring them back to the faith of their earlier fathers.

This is slightly off-topic, but do people think everyone has a Damascus experience? I think if everyone has a Damascus experience (a divine experience), they will surely believe. But, I don't think everyone gets this type of experience. People say if you seek Christ, you will find, but many don't. Meanwhile, Paul wasn't seeking at all (he didn't want anything to do with Christianity), but he had a Damascus experience.

Do all born-again Christians have a Damascus experience?

I always like to read the apologist J Warner Wallace's writings. Not only is his perspective intriguing as a cold case homicide detective. But he has done a lot of research into Mormonism. He also has a evangelist team that that tries to reach out to them.

"If you seek with all your heart, soul and mind", we know He keeps His promises and certainly God was unfolding his plan to turn Paul around and make his zeal against Christ and Christians into a force for Christ. He is equal in His relationships with each person, when we seek Him, He draws near to us.

most have been approached by Mormons and have been told "this is the one true church", when in reality the 'church" is the body of believers, the 'ecclesia" in the Greek, not a building, not an institution, not an organization, our Christian faith is a relationship with the person of Jesus Christ who now indwells the Christian.

yeah but did you ever question Mormonism during those 18 years or just go along with it ?
When I was a little kid I just went along with it. And I did do some research as an adult. But I left because it was mostly pushed down my throat. But yes, I did study it.

my neighbours are mormons but I dont think of them as christians.
They are into some strange practices and add things to the Bible. They tend to keep to themselves.
A lot of mormons practice polytheism and also some branches of their church practiced polygamy.
Its more of a religion than a faith.

but because they go to 'church' and talk about Jesus Christ, they think they are christians, yet their Jesus Christ is not the same Jesus Christ of Nazareth in the Bible. For starters, they claim he went to america and set up a temple in salt lake city utah?!

fair enough. Apart from it being pushed down your throat, what was it you didn't agree with ?

as any True Christian knows and recognizes in others,
it's all about the 'heart' and not the 'label'...
