I usually attribute that to the current evangelism emphases, rather than concentrating on the real command of the Great Commission: to make disciples. And that word means students, or learners. In most of the SBC churches (at least), the goal seems to be get them to respond to the invitation, pray the prayer, sign the membership card, and get them into a Sunday School class.
