At one point many years ago I thought it would be interesting/fulfilling to color tint old photographs, but the materials needed to do such were prohibitively expensive, and I never gave it a go. That is one definite advantage to my digital art: there is no cost involved in materials required aside from my computer, which I have any ways Another advantage is that there are no materials taking up space in my apartment, and nothing to make a mess with such as paints and brushes and varnishes and acrylic etc would do

I don't know what 3D paintings you mean, but this stuff can be used for almost anything. They actually call it epoxy resin, but it's acrylic. I wanted to try it too but it's kind of pricey. Here's an example of a popular 1 gallon resin/hardener set:
