Indeed that is another reason.
So is the still-relevant need to "edify himself" (which speaking in tongues does) and "edify the church" (which prophesying does).

Actually, self edification isn't advised in Scripture. But if you humble yourself before the Lord He will lift you up.

Edification (building up) of the spiritual attributes... of the individual (as contrasted with the group)... is what speaking in tongues does.
Jude 1:20 KJV
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,
It's not wrong to build yourself SPIRITUALLY, which puts down the works of the flesh.
To put it in natural terms: It is better to feed a group, but it's not wrong to feed yourself.

This isn't regarding everyone who comments here, but... One of the problems is that there are people who DON'T HAVE speaking in tongues (most even admit it) who are trying to teach on scriptures that are about speaking in tongues.
Unfortunately, those false teachings are adopted (sometimes unknowingly) by those who DO have speaking in tongues and then are taught by them also, because that is easier than seeking God for themselves.
There is much more to be said on that particular topic, but I think that's enough for now. People who can't receive that much are unlikely to be able to receive more.

Correct. You'd have to know what "praying in the Holy Ghost" is in order to understand what that verse is saying.
That's another reason you should receive the PROMISE. Because then he could open these type of things to you, too.

Notice he understands what he is saying ,but the hearers do not . So his understanding is fruitless because they don't understand what he's saying.

All of those regarding the Holy Ghost. When speaking in tongues was poured out, and the people were marveling because of it, Peter tried to explain that this is a manifestation of the promise made by Joel. And he did his best to exhort them ALL to receive it as well. See Acts 2 all the way to the end.
Peter received speaking in tongues. John received speaking in tongues. Andrew received speaking in tongues. James received speaking in tongues. Phillip received speaking in tongues. Bartholomew received speaking in tongues. Thomas received speaking in tongues. Matthew received speaking in tongues. James the son of received speaking in tongues. Simon the Canaanite received speaking in tongues. EVERY ONE of the 11 apostles received speaking in tongues! And yet people say it's not of God...or it's not for us... or any other excuse not to receive it themselves. .... *sigh*

Language's. 1 cor 14 ,14 is still a language. But even though the person speaking may understand what he is saying . His understanding is fruitless if the hearers do not understand. Hence we need a interpreter .
The problem is if you ONLY pray with the understanding. Speaking in tongues is praying in the spirit. Praying in a known language is praying in the understanding. And he's saying we need to do both.

The ' promise ' is the Holy Spirit. Notice that is precisely what it says. No tongues mentioned linked to ' promise ' .
But if you go back to Mark 16
17And these SIGNS shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new TONGUES ;( LANGUAGES )
38¶Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
There is no verse that says anything about praying without understanding. This is made up .
BTW, when a person is speaking in tongues, even they themselves do not know what is being spoken. That's why it is said "he speaketh mysteries". It is NOT the person's intellect that is speaking. it is the Holy Ghost, whose thinking is above our own. The wisdom (thinking) of God is foolishness unto us (makes no sense to us)... yet it is God.

Well obviously if your speaking a different language and the hearers don't understand then of course the only one that knows maybe you and God . So its better to pray one word thats understood than a hundred in a un known tongue ( that your hearers do not understand without an interpreter.
When it says ' mysteries ' this means to the person hearing its not understood. Not oooh its ' mysterious ' in a ' spiritual, deep ooooh way .
2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
Now, if you are speaking in an unknown language, then you are speaking “mysteries” (vs. 2). These are not mysteries as in 1 Corinthians 4:1; these are mysteries insomuch as no one understands what you are saying. Look at verse 16, “Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he UNDERSTANDETH not what thou sayest?” Notice the second thing about this. “Howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” In the what? Well, that isn’t the Holy Spirit. There isn’t a charismatic in this world who could ever read that second verse in this chapter. There was not one word in that passage about the Holy Spirit. Not a word. Turn back to 1 Corinthians 2:11—same book by the same author—and look at what he is talking about.

It is written "Murmur not among yourselves. No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me. "
What that means is that if a person doesn't learn how to go to God and seek his face until He answers them, they will NOT be able to discern the truth when it is spoken. Trying to discover the truth through murmuring (speaking between themselves) will NOT be sufficient.
