we never 'got' that the 1st. Poster was trying to be 'The Teacher', we feel that he was just 'SHARING',
his Love for his understanding of the scripture...
If you were responding to my post, it would be more obvious if you replied to my post. I will assume that you were. There is no spirit of contention behind my post. I was contributing to the discussion on the meaning of "Quench not the Spirit"
Does "Quench not the Spirit" mean "Don't stop being on fire for God?" It could mean something like that if that was all that was said. It could mean a number of things if that was really the "end of the quote" by Paul but it wasn't.
The Quench not the Spirit is connected to "despise not Prophesying"
So the authorial intent of "Quench not the Spirit" is most likely related to any attempt to reject or not allow prophesying in the assembly. Maybe there had been some efforts by some in the church at Thessalonica to stop people from prophesying in the assembly.
If that was Paul's intention, to advice them not to quench the Spirit by not allowing people to prophesy then we should make sure that we don't do that in our assemblies.
We really have no authority to make this mean something else completely different than what Paul was telling the Thessalonians just because we don't like the idea of people prophesying in the assemblies. As a matter of fact if we try to take what Paul said here and make it mean something other than stopping people from manifesting the gifts of the Spirit in the assemblies then we are guilty of attempting to Quench the Spirit by attempting to change the meaning of this scripture.
What I mean by that is that if we do not adhere to the admonition as it was intended by Paul and we stop people from prophesying in the assembly because we don't think that the Holy Spirit still does that then we are quenching the Spirit. If we automatically accuse a member of being fake or not having the gift of prophesying before we have proved him or her we are guilty of despising prophesying.
