Knowing Love

It isn't how much you know but how much you love that ultimately matters to God. For example,

John 14:15 NIV
15 “If you love me, keep my commands.

John 13:34 NIV
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

1 John 4:7-8 NIV
7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

You can know the Bible front and back, memorize every verse, hold an 8 year degree but without love to keep God's commands or to love others, we will not know God because God in His very essence is love. This isn’t to minimize the importance of studying the Bible but simply to highlight the call for action. We experience love only by our spiritual reflection created in our image of God. This is how we as humans experience the good qualities of life like love, justice, peace, joy, etc. It is in fact the absence of God in Hell where the good qualities of God are withdrawn and a soul fully sees the absence of God. This absence only leaves the qualities of evil. A true place of torment, anger, and pain as their will be no bridal on evil.

Just knowing the Word isn’t enough we must do what is says. (James 1:22) Jesus warned the experts of the law within His day. Notice even though they spent their whole lives memorizing and studying the law, they took most of the criticism from Jesus.

52 “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”

The Pharisees, Sadducees, and Scribes knew the law but failed to love, they failed to truly know God. God often used the people considered the lowest in cultural standards like Amos in the OT who was merely a shepherd and a farmer. Amos was called from the country to speak the Word of God to the so called experts of his day.

14 Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. 15 But the Lord took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’

Over half of Jesus's disciples were fishermen. A dirty and back breaking job. A job where the Jews who were not culturally cut out to be a disciple of a Rabbi. Peter is often heard speaking but a few times he let his knowledge get in the way of listening to the Words of God. We see this example below in Matthew 17:4-5. It takes more than hearing as any wife will testify to, it takes listening intently to the words.

4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”

Peter later was asked by Jesus 3 times do you love me. Feed my lambs, take care of my sheep, and feed my sheep. It was time for Peter not only hear but to obey. In Acts 4 we see both Peter and John dragged in front of the Sanhedrin or the Jewish governing council for testifying about Jesus Christ and performing a miracle.

The Sanhedrin contained the cultural experts of the law. They were not prepared for the Holy Spirit to speak through these men on that day.

13 When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.

Realizing that mere fishermen just astonished the council and so much so it testified to the wisdom of Jesus Christ. It highlights the power of the Spirit living in the believer.

It is not about what you know, but who you know. Knowing Jesus Christ as a our Lord and Savior teaches us how to truly love. Jesus was God in the flesh or God incarnate. God is love therefore Jesus is love. Love is an action or a verb. We must do more than hear. Listen and obey the commands of God out of love because it was God who first loved us.

Full agreement and powerful. We live in a world now where the 'battle lines' are drawn politically and in other ways. I understand some of those 'battle lines' but Christians are called to be motivated out of love and the best interests of others. This is spot on.

God is Love. And we are made of this love. We dwell in His love. It is our primary duty to demonstrate this love in our character'.

As St John said, love is more than words. It is in actions. It is giving and not getting. It is unconditional and knows no enemy. It knows no offense.

It is sacrifice and service at no cost. It is priceless. God gave an example of this brand of love by sending His only begotten Son into the world to die for us so that we can live. Not that we loved Him but He loved us first and sent His Son to be a propitiation for our sins (1 John 4:10). And His Son exemplified this love by his faith and life of sacrifice and service.

It is making sacrifice for the other person irrespective of our perception of the person. It calls for humility and meekness. Jesus said, learn of me for I am lowly and meek. God loves us even in our sins that is why He sent His Son so that we do not perish.

We must love likewise and understand that all things are lawful to us but not all things are expedient, not all things edify. (1 Corinthians 10:23). We must curtail our liberty for the good of the other person. That is sacrifice.

Love is the fulfilment of the law of God. When love pervades us, we will be unable to commit adultery with our neighbor’s wife or husband. We cannot murder or steal or bear false witness against someone. Love knows no ills. Apart from the fear of repercussions of such actions on us, we will be able to put ourselves in the position of the other person while considering his feelings in the process.

He that loves dwells in God and God in him.

I agree with your conclusion there would add to the point the commandments have always been very very good for all Man . They are important to God because when they are obeyed it protects us as a society

if no one steals , it benefits everyone who doesn’t steal but has thier own possessions and do things within the law of life justly.

if no one commits adultery marriages survive much more freely and without hindrance of temptations to stray and during times of marital struggle we don’t then consider a way out or comfort in others which later destroys families and marriages kids would more often grow up with both parents of Gods laws we simply kept because we love him and each other also

we don’t rob and steal from a beloved brother , or commit adultery with a beloved neighbors wife who is a sister

We don’t kill one another all of his “Thou shalt nots “ are good and right and for us to be at peace with each other if they are kept but we have to see it in a new way that the gospel offers in order to change the problems in our belief and understanding of God

A few weeks ago I was asked to share something with some work colleagues who are also believers over a zoom meeting, I chose to talk about love, because really there's nothing else more important to discuss IMO.
I can't attach the file so I'll copy paste parts of what I shared, it's not much but it may bless someone..

Jesus said, love your enemies.
We’ve heard that so many times, to the point it can become common, at least for me. But
recently I’ve been thinking about what it means to love your enemies. The enemy at the time
when Jesus spoke it was quite apparent. It was the Romans and their occupation. And also
tax collectors, they were particularly disliked for their unjust behaviour. But I’ve realised
today, it’s a bit different, personally who is our enemy today?
I don’t really know who my enemy is, If I have any, I’ve given it some thought, and that word
enemy, it’s so strong, I had to look up the Greek to see it’s meaning. I found it can mean:
Passively odious (extremely unpleasant, repulsive)
Actively hostile
someone looking to obstruct or harm you
Now I can think of some people…
I guess the easy ones to think of are people in your life who are in particular
opposition of your faith.

As of late, as much as I try to distance myself from social media, I’ve seen a great
deal of terrible words and actions coming out of people from within the church
towards people who don’t have the same political stance or towards people and their
sexual lifestyle choices etc.
I have no problem with people voicing what they believe or having their opinion but
I believe it must be done out of love. Remembering what Jesus said,
Mat 5:46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have?
Do not even the tax collectors do the same? (Remember how much tax
collectors were hated for their ways)
Mat 5:47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even
the Gentiles do the same?
This is such a strong, powerful statement that is counter-cultural in every respect.
Yes, you must love those who disagree with you.
Yes, you must love those who are not of the faith
Yes, you must love those who you find repulsive
Yes, you must love.
Because God allows it to rain on the just and the unjust alike. God calls us to love like this
because He would not tell us to do something He does not do Himself. I would say this is the
definition of being godly, or God-like.

Peter urges us to earnestly love
John urges us to genuinely love, not by word but by deed
Paul urges that there’s no higher calling.
I know myself in my life as I’ve walked with God that I’ve asked many times, what is your will
for my life? What do you want me to do? What am I here for?
Such common questions which I would say would pass through most believers hearts and
minds. Some people have genuine, practical direction from God on what to do, I know I have
at times, and nothing wrong with asking for direction and submitting your plans to Him. But
I firmly believe now, it doesn’t matter what I’m doing, who I’m with, or where I am, His calling
in my life, and all of our lives, is to love.
That is His will for our lives, it’s so amazingly simple, I don’t know how I missed it all these
years. But thanks for His love towards us, His patience, His kindness, that I managed to
discover this.

We reach out to our immediate neighbours around us by giving them stuff, it's a real ice breaker. You can see at first they're unsure about the random generosity, it's not normal in our culture to just give to people you don't know but I don't really care what's considered normal, we're learning to do what we what want the world to be.
Through it we've made some amazing friends.
We have chickens so when we have an abundance of eggs, we give to our neighbours in rotation, even the ones across the road that rub us up the wrong way.
It's amazing blessing being able to overlook things that people do that are vastly different from you that rub you the wrong way and be able to bless and get closer to them.

To know the word of God is to know God.

The problem with the pharisees was that they had added so much to the word of God. They had added the talmud, and the mishnah. Which obfuscated what God had intended. Jesus often corrected them over their added traditions.

The idea of secret experiential knowledge of God is gnosticism, and possible mysticism.

People who seem to know the word but are hateful and mean don't actually know the word. They know their own twisted interpretation of the word.

Yes, I've considered that knowledge without humility brings pride. As Paul said, you can know all mysteries but if you don't have love, you have nothing.
