Luke 6:20
Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said:

Matt 5:1
And seeing the multitudes, He (left them?) went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:

Everyone who hears them.

Remember that Jesus then sends his disciples out into the world to make disciples teaching them what ever he had taught his disciples. So this teaching was to carry on.

So you agree that this was back then directed toward the disciples? That's really the question I am asking.

And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

That is certainly a great question. Who is Israel?

We know that this group likely included Sadducees, Pharisees, and teachers of the Law. But who are these people? Are they actually Jewish, or are they the result of adultery . . . an impure race of people who claim to be Jewish . . . but are not. Are they actually Canaanites (or those from the Seven Nations) who have remained within the body of Jews after the Lord brought them back to the Promised Land?

Jesus Taught His diciples to follow the law , keep the sabbath , abstain from pork, follow Moses , be circumcised, show themselves to the priests , only to preach to Israel, The gentiles were ' dogs ' . Their righteousness should exceed the righteousness of the scribes and pharisees , sell all , do miracles , heal immediately upon laying on of hands , pick up serpents and be not harmed , if they drank any poisons they would not be harmed ect ..

There are no Christians present. There are no born‑again believers present. There are no New Testament writings at this time. The discourse is not addressed to the church; it is not even addressed to apostles, as the “twelve” have not yet been chosen (Matt. 10:1–4).

Yes but the question remains who is the intended audience? To be specific I'm talking about at the time and place when these words were spoken.

I actually do agree with @Blackpowderduelist - the teaching was for everyone who hears it.

Jesus was "The Sower" sowing the Seed of the Word of God that day......:love:(y)

While directed at the disciples, it was also directed at the multitude. The Law was being misrepresented and misunderstood throughout Israel. Therefore Christ explained the proper and spiritual meaning of the Ten Commandments, along with many other teachings. He that hath ears to hear let him hear what the Spirit says unto the churches. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correct, and for instruction in righteousness.

Well, at the time yes, Jesus was speaking to His soon to be twelve disciples and any others that were present that day and heard Him.

How about when God addressed the Jews in the time of Moses ,is that also ' speaking to us ' ? Or is it different when Jesus speaks in the Gospels?

Well, @cv5 made it clear that his OP was about "at the time" when Jesus was actually speaking in person.

I do agree with you @throughfaith, too that it is ALSO for all that will "hear" it.(y)

Let us allow Jesus to speak to Jews when he did .He will be speaking to Israel again. Let's not be high minded claiming everything for us all the time .

The multitudes Jesus addressed were the common people of Hebrew race. The Pharisees and scribes hadn't been alerted to the danger to them that they saw in Christ later, and what drew the crowds to Christ was that He fed and healed them. These people had learned of God in the synagogue, not by reading it themselves and the traditions were taught there more than scripture at that time.

What Jesus taught that crowd was eternal truths for us as well as for the Jews at that mount.

More nonsense from you. Are you trying to dodge the application of the Beatitudes to yourself?
