I’ve just been reading and thinking on the “doubting castle” and “giant despair” in the pilgrims progress! It’s very encouraging! 🔥 I absolutely love the book and I would recommend reading it to anybody as many times as they can! It’s about a man named Christian who lives with his family in the a city that is doomed for destruction. Christian has a big “burden” strapped to his back that will surely sink him lower than the grave dm a book in his hand. Upon reading that his home will surely come to ruin he begins to frantically search for a way of escape. Whilst pacing the fields and praying, he exclaims “what shall I do to be saved?” And sees a man named evangelist coming towards his (I’m power-phrasing) to cut a long story short he is told to walk through a gate and up a mountain which has a cross at the top, along with other instructions, it’s. Very tough journey and he has all kinds of problems on the way. But he eventually makes it to the cross, ignoring any advice from do-Gooders to go “an easier way”
His burden falls off and rolls down the hill into a grave and then he goes on his way, navigating through the dangers and difficulties of his journey to the “celestial city”
There’s a part In the story where he and his companion go off the beaten path, after seeing what looked like an easier way. Night falls and they get lost and fall into a deep pit. The land belongs to a man named “giant despair” who takes them and locks them in a dungeon in “doubting castle” they re kept there for
A long time hungry and beaten, while the giant taunts them and tells them that they might as well commit suicide to escape the beatings. Christian eventually realises while praying and beating his chest that there’s something in his bosom, it’s a key called the “key of promise” which he discovers opens the every gate to the castle! He then goes “merrily on his way”
I’ve been physically unwell and even bed ridden for 2 months now and very discouraged but as I lay in bed listening to the promises of God (too weak to read) on a YouTube video I suddenly feel able to get up. I’ve made
Myself something to eat and arranged to go back to work tomo! It’s amazing.
