I think that the longest fast I've ever been on is 1 day, and that's been so long ago, I don't remember if it was no water or food, or no food and only water. what I do remember is feeling like I was going to die-- nervous, jittery, shaking and almost unable to pick up the fork to eat. And that was only one day!
I don't know if I believe people who claim to have been on 40 day fasts. But I have heard plenty of stories about people who have gone on 3, 7, 14, 21, and 40 day fasts. And I have even heard of someone (prophet Brian Carn), who went on an 80 day fast, without food or water. I know that some people starve without choice. I think about some of the people in the Haiti earthquake who survived, after they were discovered, buried under rubble, more than a month or so later. So, I know that the body can survive up to a certain extent of time without food or water. But to starve yourself at will is another story. There have actually been people who have died on fasts and hunger strikes. I don't consider it a good testimony for Jesus to die in the midst of seeking His face. There are practically proper and improper ways to do it, from what I understand...after listening and reading a little on the subject.
What is your experience, if any, with fasting? I know that it's you're not supposed to really talk about, but only do unto G-d. But I'm asking for the sake of advice. Because I have been contemplating it for a long time, but have'nt been able to muster up the courage to take on. I know that I lack self discipline but it's not something I will overcome in one day. I just want to know the healthiest and most fruitful way to fast, so that if I did decide to do it, I would do it successfully.
