Hello @CherieR, what has helped/helps me the most is finding ways to keep my eyes off of this world and focused on the Lord (and on my future life with Him in eternity, instead of on this life in the here and now). Practicing all of the spiritual disciplines helps with that, of course (e.g. Bible Study, Prayer, Church/Fellowship, Witnessing), as have things like the daily teachings that you can find on Christian radio (they can all be heard on the web now .. e.g. www.renewingyourmind.org / www.gty.org / www.insightforliving.org / https://bbn1.bbnradio.org/english/home/all-programs/gateway-to-joy-elisabeth-elliot/), and forums like CF too 
However, the spiritual discipline that helped me the most, by far, was "Scripture Memorization". See The Topical Memory System (this is the system that the Navigators have been training their missionaries with from almost 100 years now).
Sinning, for instance, becomes increasingly more difficult to do when you treasure/hide God's word in your heart and mind in this way (because every time you are tempted to sin, the Holy Spirit will bring one or two perfectly memorized verses to the forefront of your mind to remind you (in exacting detail) why you shouldn't choose to do so).
You will also learn new things about the verses/passages that you memorize because as you continue to grow in your knowledge and understanding of each of them with the Holy Spirit's help, they will become a part of you in a very special way
In case you are interested, here are some other verses that come to mind in regard to the importance of growing in the knowledge and understanding of God's word .. e.g. Deuteronomy 11:18-21; Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1:1-3, 119:105; John 17:17; Romans 1:16, 12:2, Ephesians 6:10-17; 2 Timothy 3:16-17.
