I can speak, sing AND pray in tongues...Just open my mouth and whatver God wants me to say it comes out.
Its kind of weird, but there you go.

I prefer to pray in my own tongue though, at least I know what Im saying, but sometimes its really for God to know not me. I just wondered if He ever wanted someone else to hear it.

So, you're not praying when you speak in tongues, then? What the heck are you doing? Just chatting to yourself?

My thought is that if you are frustrated, then that tongue you are speaking is not from the Lord.

no i pray as well ...God has me practice so I can kearn more words But its slow, the only way I can make snese is when Im singing songs I KNOW in this other tongue. They can be worship songs, or any songs.

I always pray that whatever I say is edifiying...I am NOT chatting to myself though, that would be stupid. Why even use it if it just talking to yourself.

well thats stupid to say its not from the Lord when He has me say Hallelujah.

would the Lord NOT want me to magnify and praise Him?

How odd that you think God is having you "practice". That is self-willed. If God gives someone the ability to speak a foreign language, there is no practice involved. No wonder you are frustrated.

I'm going to move on from this thread. I cannot be helpful here.

Speaking. a language is easy...understanding it is not.

I taught ESOL so I know what it feels like to teach and speak in a second langauge for people that do not understand English...YES it can be frustrating. But they get there in the end. It may not be perfect, but to achieve fluency without having learned it...that is a gift.

good you are no help.

language has to be useful to someone and spoken you dont just use langauge for your own ends.

God has you use it you can direct your tongue but you cannot know what comes out when you are fluent. Becase you have not learned the words before.

if you have the gift you would know what I am talking about..,and I asked if you had it. You dont if you always know what you are saying when you are speaking an unknown tongue. Kind of hard to explain but there you go. It is an amzing gift, though its just kinda weird to have this beautiful langauge and just not being able to talk to anyone that knows it. (aside from God of course!)

theres one word 'Gam' which means dance.
But I know of no langauge that has 'gam' as that word 'dance'

I found a website called omniglot

it is quite amazing to find so many languages there on the one website

It does have the tower of Babel passage in Genesis translated into many different langauges (though not all of them)

Apparently there are 135 different langauge families..this reminds me of the 135 fish that Jesus caught

still no real clue on what my unknown tongue is though. Would love to learn it so I can interpret..its one thing to speak it fluently, its another to understand it. But interesting thing is in practice, I can pick up any song and sing it in that tongue. I can read any Bible passage out loud in that language. I can pray and God knows what I am praying even if I dont.

It really is a gift, but ....what do I do with it?!

i know its not Hebrew because the sounds are different ...every langauge has certain sounds and they will have the same sounds as part of their 'alphabet' or phonemes.
