So sad. I've seen several studies that there more people there are who witness a crime, the less likely it is that someone will try to intervene.
Yes and what you're saying has a lot to do with crowd psychology, also known as mob psychology. Even a small group of people on a train are sufficient to define a crowd. I won't go off on a tangent about psychology, but there's a lot of information on the Internet about how people are different when they're alone versus when they're in a group.

A couple years ago I was with my parents walking in to our local Wal-mart. Just a regular day. We crossed to the entry way and some how got between a dispute with two guys, one in a truck and one walking with his gf. Minding our own business we continued toward the entrance and my mother happened to glance to see what all the cussing was about and the young guy turned on her and started talking filth. Then he pulled down his pants and exposed his rear end to her. I had my phone in my hand and started calling 911. His gf yelled at me and said "don't you dare call the cops"!! When she saw I meant what I was about to do they jumped in their truck and sped off. I didn't call, but got info and let my parents get their groceries. When we got in the car my father started to head toward my place. I said, "turn around". He asked where I needed to go, I said "we're going to the police!!" He fussed and said it wasn't worth it but I insisted.

We spoke to a cop who took the information I had. My father downplayed it. So the officer asked what we wanted done. He said because he exposed his rear-end he couldn't be charged as if it had been a frontal exposure. So I interrupted and said "This is serious !! This guy cussed at my mother, he exposed himself in a public place where children all around and could see. You need to find this guy and put the fear of God in him!!" A couple weeks later we heard back from the officer. He went to visit the young guy and said he was surprised to see him but broke down immediately. He said he had been angry at someone else and lost control. The officer said he was apologetic and confessed immediately to what he had done. The officer warned him that he had better never have a reason to visit him again and the young guy swore he wouldn't. Someone has to speak up. I don't know what I could or would have done, I'm quick to act and think about it later. But there is no way I could sit there and watch that happen silently, even less so if hubby were with me. I just could not sit and do nothing.

We aren't asking them to intervene, we can understand why some elderly lady doesn't try to fight this guy off, but rather, why didn't they call 911?

Not only did no one help, but people recorded it on their phones. They are subject to being charged for doing so. I carry mace and a knife everywhere I go. Hubby has his CCW which I'm seriously considering for myself. Also armed with a tazer in our vehicle. And just for fun I have a huge female German Shepard that travels with me wherever I go. Haven't had anyone brave enough to walk up to the vehicle yet. lol And everyone in our neighborhood knows she's there. When people see her and hear her, they can't believe she's a female.

Women today need to be ready to defend themselves and aware of their situation at all times. No one is coming to your aid and cops can't get there in time in most cases. Expect to have to defend yourself. I don't know the laws in PA. What weapons you are allowed to carry. Brass knuckles, mace, a brick in your purse, something to give you an advantage. I noticed the attacker was black, wondering if that is part of the reason no one gave aid.

Very first thing I would do, then try to stop the train. Let someone know there is an emergency.

But it wasn't a single elderly person, I can guarantee there were many healthy young men on that train. If they don't care enough to help someone in need right then and there, knowing full well that a single rapist stands no chance against a train full of people, then why would they care enough to call the police and then have to be inconvenienced with a phone call, then having to wait around for when they come to make a police statement?

Everyone who did nothing should be criminally charged. They have it on video. Not blaming the victim in any way, but women need to have something to protect themselves if they are traveling alone. There are a lot of stories were good people intervene and put their own lives at risk. Why these people didn't I don't know, but they should be charged.

Make them care, charge them with whatever will stick.

One time I was going to work on the subway in NYC. This homeless guy began hitting on this girl sitting at my end of the train. It was obnoxious but seemed like the best strategy was to ignore him. However, everyone else at that end of the train moved to the other end leaving only me and this girl. I kept my head down, looking at the floor. The girl tried to leave as well but this guy blocked her from leaving. We came to a stop and I got up as though I was leaving, very deferential and stepped past him and then put him into a full nelson as the train had stopped. The doors opened and I forced him off the train and stood in the door until the doors closed on him.

seriously? You have to look to other people to know what to do in a situation like this?

I think you are either misunderstanding what I said, or I have no idea what you are talking about at this point.

I am saying that mob mentality is a lame excuse. Everyone had a phone, everyone knows 911, there was no excuse and they should be charged with a crime. I think we have a criminal code where it is a crime to have extreme disregard for another person.

At the very least this is a good case where public humiliation is called for. Let's bring their faces up on the news, let everyone in Philadelphia know who these spectators were.

Lol, I bet he was shocked!! I doubt at my height I could pull that off. But a face full of mace might help. I also have very long, strong fingernails, not the stick on ones. Many a pushy guy in high school learned to back off and keep their hands to themselves. Gotta use what you have!!

I don't think his behavior warranted mace at that moment. If he was wearing a fancy suit he would have simply been an extremely obnoxious jerk, so the "crime" would have been that he was homeless and smelled. But once he blocked her way out I felt he had crossed a line.

I agree that its a lame excuse to not call 911, but its equally a lame excuse to not help. If I were in the woman's place, I would've hated them just as much whether or not they called 911 if they didn't help me. Even if they did call, the police are not going to arrive in time to stop it, so big deal it's not like it helps. I would've gotten as much done calling the police myself after the rape occurred. The only thing that would have made any difference at all is if someone helped her right then and there, and as far as I'm concerned everyone on the train should be convicted or assisting in rape regardless of if they called 911 or not.

I feel you can universally condemn everyone who did not call 911, but you have to look at each individual to determine if they could have "intervened". Sure if a woman had mace on her she could have maced him. No doubt if there was a healthy man on that train you would expect him to intervene except the entire dogma these days is to emasculate men. They have been raised on video games rather than contact sports.

It usually takes 5 minutes between stops. Even if this woman was attacked shortly after one of these stops the entire attack would have been around 3-4 minutes. Plenty of time to call 911, get the cops ready and have him arrested at the next stop.

But a small elderly woman who tries to intervene could have been killed, a person who is crippled, or with serious health issues could have also been killed. A mother with a small child could not have intervened. I see a lot of people on a subway car that I would not condemn for not intervening, but all of them could have called 911. If they videotape after the phone call they can be doing that as evidence for the police.

Being an "emasculated man" is just as poor an excuse as mob mentality. And it's mighty hard to murder someone while you're raping someone else. People did, indeed, video it, and yet it seems that they didn't turn it in since it was the train surveillance camera that provided all the evidence. The articles I've read say that the witnesses "did nothing to help" - meaning that nobody yelled or made any sort of even verbal effort - which anyone can do. Yes, I condemn every single one of them.

i seen that a few times once when a lady was stab in a store, and they just walk over to buy some stuff. On the O'reillys factor, once in new Orleans before the flood.they where grabbing girls breast as a group and tore lady shirt right off.The fact that you could watch that stuff online.I'll say this it was worse in my day until they change some laws as far as what you could watch.

JamesRedPill or RedPill78 did a short bit on how you see this behavior in China because if you help a person who has been injured you can be liable for all their health care costs. When the thugs are running the country they don't want good samaritans intervening as they send out their enforcers
