Can a band NOT be mainstream and still peak at #1 on Billboard? No. It means they have major distribution and lots of radio support.

yeah it did peak on the billboards, but remember, today's kids have a different definition of mainstream..the meaning would be making music for the greater masses, or to be accepted by most of the population (or like many say, "soldout" and/or "became soft")...pantera was mainstream, but the 1990s, so you you are correct, most americans back then listened to metal, but they arent mainstream anymore...many bands today peak at #1, but still arent mainstream, because they only stay at that position for only a week...mainstream artist stay at #1 for weeks, such as lady gaga and jb and katy perry (these are the mainstream music today)

i can talk about music because im studying music, i will not talk in subjects of fashion, trends, criminal justice, IT, grammar and math because i know very little to nothing on them

I didn't specifically call your music generic. I was talking about the different ways people see music when it's not what they prefer.
It's a matter of opinion, not fact.

opinions are for those who dont have knowledge "i believe" "my opinion is," "i think" those are words that are used by those who simply dont know....i you can prefer what i want idc, its your choice, but when it comes to people who know, like many out there who know music theory, they will step all over you. If you are going to college, dont expect professors to be "nice" they will treat you like crap if do something like you did today. this wasnt even a thread about what song or what music is better, i dont like to touch that subject with anybody. I just wanted people to listen to the song...you began this discussion i ended it, you can keep replying idc, i ll ignore your posts

Cemetery Gates was the other one I couldn't think of.

The definition of mainstream hasn't changed and won't change. It means popular and easily accessible. It's not another name for the pop genre.

Pantera was mainstream rock in the 90s even though it was technically heavy metal (they STILL get radio play, by the way). That's not weird or even special.

Those other artists you mentioned are mainstream pop. Different genres, but both mainstream.

You're wrong about the #1 thing... but you're 18. You're probably thinking of iTunes charts or something?

cemetery gates...i love that song...now billboards are based on album sales, the artist who sales the most albums in a week tops on the billboards, so if an artists keeps peaking at #1 it means the artist sales on that album are high, adn if not that the sales drop, thats how the billboards works (at least the billboards 200)...politically, the words mainstream hasnt change, but for the kids today that listen to metal specifically, it means it has become soft, thats why i said it wasnt mainstream, but it was mainstream metal until the band broke up. pantera didnt really anymore albums so the sales went down and yeah, people dont listen to them as much

It's ok to not know everything, man. You don't have to do this backtracking thing or whatever it's supposed to be.

You learn stuff as you get older and gather more experience. Being 18 is nothing to be ashamed of. Not understanding Billboard is nothing to be ashamed of either- the major label industry is toast. Billboard props up major labels like they are still influential, but terrestrial radio play and retail sales are all inflated numbers and even with the inflation are still pathetic compared to Pantera's day.

Pantera was a platinum selling act. Even their smaller albums went gold.

Know how many artists go multiplatinum these days? Like hardly any. Only 13 last year and the sales they track are albums SHIPPED to retail. Not actually sold.

Anyway, sorry I called you out on your Pantera comment, but I don't know anyone in my real life who hasn't heard of them. They were big in the 90s and are still popular (still get played on Active Rock stations). Vulgar Display of Power is a classic record that I still hear just when I'm out and about. A couple weeks ago I heard someone with a Walk ringtone. You don't get that kind of saturation and longevity without being a mainstream act.

If you want to be into music (secular), might I suggest not limiting yourself to Christian music exclusive circles? Obviously it throws off your perspective of what's popular and what isn't. Just a suggestion.

first of..i am a member of the billboards, being 18 has nothing to do with knowledge...i know more than your average american...btw many artists go multiplatinum but hardly any go diamond...i know vulgar display is their most classic record, the reason is because of walk...people believe just because they are older the know more, yes they have more experience, knowledge is something you get by research, which i have done with pantera for over a year, and i know enough about them and their achievements for my words to be valid....i barely listen to christian music, since most of it its just sint good music....whats popular today in rock and metal is metalcore and deathcore bands, A7x, KSE, ATR, Lamb of God, Slipknot, Trivium, Bullet for my Valentine, Bring me the Horizon, Black veil Brides, Escape the Fate...idk what the hell is popular in rap or pop, i dont follow stupid trends
 
the new black veil brides album is pretty good, the new escape the fate well outside of maybe two or three songs, was pretty bad.

I know many but gonna single out The Ascendicate's song Burden.Living Sacrifice and Becoming the Archetype have many good songs also...I am also a Mortification fan.
 
Oh and if you haven't heard Harmony's song Prevail...it is so worth listening to..I am not a fan of his voice type but the musical talent and the drummer is quite riveting and very well done.

Pretty much every song from underoath's album-they're only chasing safety. Also HTML rules dude by the devil wears prada. Also Beliefs by we came as romans.
