Can secular rock songs be used for evangelism if one changes the lyrics?

Yup!

But they don't like to think about that. That's the Christian music we are used to. If they think about its origins, it makes it harder to point fingers at the modern Christian music they don't like.

A friend of mine said heavy metal and Christian is a contradiction. Do Christian’s really believe this?
 
I can imagine God giving us gifts to create whatever music we enjoy and I’m sure it pleases Him if the words uplift and praise His name.

Disclaimer: I’m not into heavy metal, but how can I not accept the fact that a child of God created it and if the Holy Spirit guides him to create heavy metal it’s ok to do so. I don’t know of any verses that is against heavy metal.

There are young people who will only listen to a certain sound. You gotta speak to them in their language or they may not listen to you.
When painting a picture, one uses many colors. With music, there's sound colors. It's the picture that one paints that can be good or bad, not the colors used.

People have various opinions...I've found that looking for the truth can help me arrive at the correct one.

Can't imagine a heavy metal version would be pleasing to God.
 
Music is God's gift to us. It's not inherently good or evil. It is a tool for people to use either for good or for bad. As a huge fan of CCM (but not heavy rock), I think it's the lyrics that count. So, they I might not be a fan of heavy metal, someone who's lost might be. That lost person may not walk into a church or open the Bible, but they'll listen to a song. I would imagine that a lot of times, someone is pulled in by the melody and they'll eventually hear the lyrics that edify God and come to love God. God uses broken people to accomplish His will, He can use broken music genres as well.
