Hey everyone

I'm actually interested in how we all think about beauty.
I have had a few years in my life that every guy I met called me ugly.
So that is still having a few consequences but let the past be the past eh...

My curious mind wants to know what beauty is according to you...

This is always a fascinating philosophical question. I think there needs to be a distinction here between inner and outer beauty first of all. Inner beauty is usually seen as being a moral person, with qualities such as being caring, compassionate, etc. This type of beauty would be irrelevant to whether or not the person was "physically" beautiful, such as someone similar in looks to the character in the movie Penelope. She would be a beautiful person on the inside.

As for outer beauty, this seems to be culturally conditioned. For example, in Mauritana women are seen as beautiful if they are obese, and even force fed in order to gain weight. In the United States most would say this is not beautiful. Putting aside health concerns, the point here is that there are different ideas about what is beautiful around the world. I'm pretty much going to say that physical beauty is subjective. It depends on where you live. People in the Untied States have a certain idea of what makes a woman beautiful, but I'm not really confident that our ideas(unrealistic in a lot of ways) would be universally applicable.

Finally, there is also the case that most people can identify with of seeing someone as more beautiful after getting to know them and finding out what type of person they are and also cases where people who appear to be "physically beautiful" become less so due to personality defects, such as excessive selfishness or a lack of compassion.

Quite an interesting thought... I guess most people would agree with what you say.
One thing I know is that Western Europe also has a similar idea of beauty as the US has with a few distinctions but of course every individual indeed has an own idea of beauty.

Let's see, beauty that comes to my mind reading this question right now.

The strength and keeping spirit uplifted of Harriet Tubman.

A young girl who has withstood temptation unscathed, and remained a virgin until marriage, fighting off the boys.

The playfullness of a kitten.

Acceptance and love given to that which has been rejected by the world, when needed and called for.

Order, peace, in lives, world.

A good marriage.

A human life that is non-judgemental, and if judgemental, judgement at the right time and not overbearing.

A human life that does not try to control and manipulate everyone else, thus hurting them and thinking they are God, and causing good persons to want to send them to Hell and have no compassion.

Healing in body, mind, and spirit.

Transformation, like a butterfly.

I think each person finds people beautiful in different ways. My qualifiers would not be the same as Sooners. Though we are both planning a trip to Mauritania now. jk

I like this list idea but, with a few tweaks ;)

The Spirit of Joan of Ark

Someone who has seen the darkside but chooses the light. For we were all once sinners.

The Playfulness of a Tiger.

A Strong desire for a God centered and Passionate Marriage.

A person who knows the difference between right and wrong and is willing to draw a line in the sand and stand for the truth.

A person who is not too smothering and cuddly, but has a good grasp of what moves people.

A person with a strong Constitution, to withstand the world.

A person who realizes that they are a Rose and a Pearl, that is not for the Swine who cannot tell the difference.

“‘You were the seal of perfection,
full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in Eden,
the garden of God;
every precious stone adorned you:
carnelian, chrysolite and emerald,
topaz, onyx and jasper,
lapis lazuli, turquoise and beryl
Your settings and mountings were made of gold;
on the day you were created they were prepared.
14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub,
for so I ordained you.

Your heart became proud
on account of your beauty,

and you corrupted your wisdom
because of your splendor.
So I threw you to the earth;
I made a spectacle of you before kings. \

"If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life
Never make a pretty woman your wife
So in my personal point of view
get an ugly girl to marry you." - Jimmy Soul

Should we have been born blind and incapable of seeing beauty or should we reject our senses?

The Encyclopedia of Insects states that there are 150,000 to 200,000 known species of Lepidoptera. But of these, only 10 percent are butterflies -the rest are moths. Does that mean that moths lack beauty?

Vanity is arrogant, self conscious and self centered.
Beauty is generous, gracious and simply “grounded“.
Vanity demands attention, Beauty attracts it.
Vanity holds secrets and shame, while Beauty recognizes mistakes as part of life’s journey, accepting her inner buffoon with forgiveness and grace.
Vanity is critical and quick to judge, Beauty remains open, releasing tension to preserve lightness of being.
Vanity’s self importance clings to past failure as though her perfection really matters,
Beauty laughs or cries and then let’s go; clearing the way for the present.

(something I found on the side of the internet)

I'm not going to throw the baby out with the Bathwater. I believe that Beauty is something to be beautiful but, Vanity is something to be despised.

I kept the baby and made it wear mirrored sunglasses and dressed it like Elvis!

Actually Zeroturulence seems to have a point...
king Saul seemed to be of great appearance too which made him fall in pride.

Thanks for that thought Zeroturbulence

You're welcome Daughter, although I see now that I was being a wee bit harsh. Truth is that beauty is in us ALL, and that one only needs to look deep to see the beauty in anything. Even the ugliest, most hated person on earth has beauty still alive inside them that maybe no one can see, not even them, maybe only God.

These are the words to a song that you've probably heard. I think its words express the real beauty that often goes unseen in every one of us.

Beautiful

Don't look at me

Every day is so wonderful
Then suddenly
It's hard to breathe
Now and then, I get insecure
From all the pain, I'm so ashamed

I am beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring me down
I am beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring me down
So don't you bring me down today

To all your friends, you're delirious
So consumed in all your doom
Trying hard to fill the emptiness
The piece is gone left the puzzle undone
That's the way it is

You are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring you down
You are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring you down
Don't you bring me down today...

No matter what we do
(no matter what we do)
No matter what they say
(no matter what they say)
When the sun is shining through
Then the clouds won't stay

And everywhere we go
(everywhere we go)
The sun won't always shine
(sun won't always shine)
But tomorrow will find a way
All the other times

'cause we are beautiful no matter what they say
Yes, words won't bring us down, oh no
We are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring us down
Don't you bring me down today
