I am having difficulty understanding why so many people believe so differently.

If it's not a biblical doctrine, but possibly a personal belief, garnered by scripture, what harm is there?

2Tim..3:16 All scripture is given by INSPIRATION of God,and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

I understand heresy, twisted false teachings and out right lies attributed to God's word.

According to Britannica Christian doctrine is " teaching" an attempt to state in intellectually responsible terms the message of the gospel and the content of the faith it elicits.

2John 1:9 Whosoever TRANSGRESSETH, and ABIDETH not in the doctrine of Christ,HATH NOT GOD. He that ABIDETH in the doctrine of Christ,he hath both the Father and the Son.

We know the doctrine of the O.T was the law, which man twisted also for his own benefit or gain.

Titus2:1 But SPEAK THOU the things which become SOUND doctrine:
John7:16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

For people that only read and do not participate but come here to learn, please let's discuss biblical doctrine with proof of in scripture. Do not be obscure or vague or by implication that the word says this........
Be forthright, upright and sincere,we all may learn something!

I am having difficulty understanding why so many people believe so differently.
The first chapters of 1 Corinthians helps explain the issue:

1 Corinthians 1:10-13 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?

Instead of following the Lord Jesus Christ, some follow men/men's doctrines. To the extent the men being followed teach the truth, there will be no division. However, once a pastor or teacher veers from the truth and others follow, there will be division.

Following men rather than the Lord Jesus Christ results in carnality:

1 Corinthians 3:3-4 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?

Those who walk in fellowship with the Father and with the Lord Jesus Christ will be in fellowship with each other:

1 John 1:3-4 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

2 Corinthians 13:11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.

The "one mind" is found in following the Lord Jesus Christ ... the Head of the Body which is His Church.

We have a tendency of saying "I'm protestant" ... or "I'm catholic" ... or "I'm [fill in the blank]. How does God see us? and how does God want us to see each other? God want us to see ourselves as members of the same body ... following the Lord Jesus Christ as the Head ... each of us members in particular ... placed in the body as it has pleased God

Romans 12:5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

James 4:11 Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.

1 Peter 3:8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous

Webster's 1828 Dictionary

Doctrine

DOCTRINE, noun [Latin , to teach.]

1. In a general sense, whatever is taught. Hence, a principle or position in any science; whatever is laid down as true by an instructor or master. The doctrines of the gospel are the principles or truths taught by Christ and his apostles. The doctrines of Plato are the principles which he taught. Hence a doctrine may be true or false; it may be a mere tenet or opinion.

2. The act of teaching.
He taught them many things by parables, and said to them in his doctrine Mark 4:2.

3. Learning; knowledge.
Whom shall he make to understand doctrine? Isaiah 28:9.

4. The truths of the gospel in general.
That they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things. Titus 2:1.

5. Instruction and confirmation in the truths of the gospel. 2 Timothy 3:10.

My directive is to allow the Bible to interpret itself ….

I have a strict and somewhat extensive protocol for making that happen.

The word rightly dividing in 2Ti 2:15 is the Greek word orthotomeō ..which means - right or perfect cutting. To which the intrinsic nuance would be… “there is one way to cut or divide the word, all others are wrong”….That verse does not allow us to presume, speculate, surmise, think or feel ……conclusions.

That does not mean we don’t use our intellect or reasoning as we study and work the Word. It simply means we don’t conclude what we feel or think ...or what it is saying to you. You conclude what God purposed it to say …

Does what I think fit…. with the verse, does it fit with the immediate context, the remoter context with the entirety of the Bible. Is this addressing Jews or Gentiles or Church of God. Is this a cultural idiom a figure of speech or an orientalism? Has the punctuation changed the meaning, have there been words added that change the meaning…. Etc.

There are many different things we must keep in mind as we go through the Bible, because we are the gatekeepers for maintaining the integrity of the Truth.

For people that only read and do not participate but come here to learn, please let's discuss biblical doctrine with proof of in scripture.
All Christians should be aware of the fundamental doctrines of Christianity. They are generally stated in the Statements of Faith or Articles of Faith of evangelical and fundamental Churches. Here is a broad list of the very basic doctrines:

1. The doctrine of Scripture
2. The doctrine of God
3. The doctrine of Christ
4. The doctrine of the Holy Spirit
5. The doctrine of Creation
6. The doctrine of Man
7. The doctrine of Angels
8. The doctrine of Salvation
9. The doctrine of the Church
10. The doctrine of future events

The doctrine of Christ is the most important and critical, since anyone who does not hold to the Bible doctrine of Christ is an "antichrist".

Thanks @Nehemiah6 ,
Let's discuss your list of ten that you say are basic doctrines.

Btw not ALL who come here are " christians",some are new babes in the faith, seekers and others.

Mine may be in a different order than yours.

Today at this very moment the most critical and important doctrine is the doctrine of Christ.
Which is his mission, our redemption, and
righteousness with God through his death, burial and resurrection. Now on that day the law was fulfilled in Jesus for he took the curse of sin to the cross to break the bondage of sin and pay our debt.

Is.7:14Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold,a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son,and shall call his name Immanuel.(" God with us")
Luke2: 12 And this shall be a SIGN unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
Mt.3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying," This is my beloved Son,in whom I am well pleased".
Acts4:12 Neither is there SALVATION in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.( Jesus)

We will start from here for he is the chief corner stone and the foundation of our belief.

I read the Bible alone,So I have my own unique views.I won't be surprised by people who don't understand the Bible same as me.Maybe you sometimes think someone's understanding of the Bible is stupid or even wrong,So what? It was God who chose these seemingly foolish people.

One main reason why we have thousands of "Christian" churches who believe so differently is that Satan has fought against LITERAL Bible doctrine. I.E. Kingdom Hall twists nearly every verse in the Christian Bible. I'll stick with LITERAL unless there is absolute Scriptural proof otherwise.

IMO, Scripture is a "living thing." By that I mean the Holy Spirit imparts understanding to a sincere believer. That understanding is based on the ability of the believer to understand what is imparted, and how to grow from it.

As the Apostle taught, not all believers are fully mature Elders of the Church and able to understand Scripture on a spiritual level. Many believers are newborn children of God and are still being fed with honey and milk. Not yet mature enough to feast on the meat of the Word. For this reason, I believe, a Scripture can have one understanding by a new child of God, and a different, deeper spiritual understanding by a mature Elder of the Church.

I do not know anyone who would expect a newborn child of God to understand and be able to debate the difference between dichotomy and trichotomy. How could they?

It does not mean one is wrong and the other right, it means that as we grow and mature in our lifewalk with Jesus, and our sincere study of the Word, and dependence on the Holy Spirit for instruction, we have different levels of understanding.

This is true ... and I believe we can study God's Word a lifetime and never exhaust everything there is to know about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. At each new understanding, we find a deeper understanding and continue expanding our knowledge in Him as He brings us to the heart of the Father ... kind of gives our finite minds a glimpse of eternity ...

in the context of Theology, "the study of God" there are many. Yet in "Christian theology " were to formulate our understanding of God by the word of God. However, the God of the Bible desires to have a relationship with man because the God of the Bible is alive, unlike other gods created by man.

I love what Hebrew 11:6 says "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is,
and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him."

Due to the Divine nature of God and HIS unlimited power and ability and our limitation, we must come to God and learn of HIM on HIS terms and methods of doing so.

1. we must be born again saved by the Lord Jesus Christ through faith John 3:16 Roman 10: 9-11
2. We must be open to the Holy Spirit to lead us and guide us into all truth John 14:6,10,12-25
3. We must study the word of God 2 Tim 2:15

DOCTRINE MUST BE SOUND.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the final authority concerning all teaching of the church. Why?

Because HE is the head of the Church. Eph 1:22, & 5:23

WE are told to hold fast to the teaching of Christ and to the tradition of the church 1corthians 11:1-2

1. Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ. 2Now I praise you, brethren, that you remember me in all things and keep the traditions just as I delivered them to you.

For a doctrine to be godly it must :

  1. have fidelity to Christ
  2. have Fidelity to HIS word
  3. seek that which is good and not of self-indulgences or out of pride
  4. it must bring Glory to Christ
  5. and it must be praiseworthy and be confirmed by the word of God.
Foundational truths of God's word are easy to see. How so? what is a foundational truth?

Foundational truth is anything in the word of God that if it is not true or taken out the Belief system fails.

For example, IF Jesus did not die and resurrect from the dead literally our faith is void.

1Cortians 15:17-19

17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. 18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. 19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

Biblical doctrine must build up and speak the truth! always. All biblical doctrine that we built on Christ is unshaken. All who build on the truth of Christ will not be removed, defeated, and the gates of hell will not prevail.

In contrast, those who do not build on the foundational truth of Christ and HIS word will be defeated, fail, and will be overcome by the devil.

I think this is pretty good for shooting at the hip :).

it’s sad because this place is just a microcosm of the real world there’s just as much division all Over in the world on every subject it seems but Christians aren’t meant to be like the world we aren’t supposed to treat each other like the world treats each other but we do

Heck sometimes the world gets along better than we do even if they are agreeing on some worldly idea like evolution or science or technology they do it either more harmony than Gods children seem to be able to do it

just my own thought but it seems like the church is really Missing the mark we argue about the Lords word that teaches us to treat one another with love , patience , kindness , to submit to one another in love treat each other like Gods family when we’re with other Christians we’re talking to Gods children that he loves

I think open free conversation would open up a world of growth for all of us if we can get past the imaginary conflict we cling to on our hearts of pride

Doctrine of God should be a simple one for how can we not see a creator of everything.
Gen.1:1-31 Tells of the heavens and earth creation.
In these chapters we are told in v26 And God said,LET .... US .....MAKE MAN IN OUR IMAGE,AFTER OUR LIKENESS........

We see the PLURALS in US AND OUR which indicates multiples.

We have occasion throughout the O.T. to see God speak, interact and even write with his finger as he deals with his chosen tribe Israel. We read about his manifestations as the Shekinah cloud that followed them by day and the fire that led them at night.

Forwarding to the N.T. when the prophecies were fulfilled JESUS is born. Mt,Mk,Luke and John are the gospels according to those who knew him intimately or by the Apostles. We have little record of Jesus until the time appointed and he began his ministry.

Matthew 3 teaches us about his baptism by John the Baptist. In these verses and the parallel gospels we see the full TRIUNE manifestation of God the Father,God the Son and God the Holy Spirit in verses 16/17.

May we discuss the trinity in peace!

Amen, I think that is a foundational truth, Jesus said come as a child. Roman chapter 1 states God has made it plain for us so we are without excuse.

Amen to that wonderful and edifying post !!

“For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:9‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭3:21-22‬ ‭KJV‬‬

note the appearance of the cloud showing us who’s voice was speaking

“And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭17:2, 5‬ ‭KJV‬‬

we again have peters explaination concreting it and offering another testament of prophecy saying the same things

“For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”
‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭1:16-19, 21‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It’s only in Jesus we see the father n and Holy Ghost in one being because he is revealed in Christ father son and Holy Ghost in one Lord

in the ot there’s a cool story of Abraham meeting and seeing God , but what he actually sees are three men who all speak and act as one but also perform different duties.

when they speak they speak as one and they move as one but at another point God stays with Abraham and the other two men go to look upon sodom and Gomorrah

When they appear in sodom they appear as two angels who then call down the lords fire in the City.

but when they appear to Abraham it’s three men and they act and speak in unison also Abraham addresses them as one just found that interesting given your reference to “ let us make man in our image “

we see in the ot “multiples “ later we see three as one , it’s only when we get to the gospel it all makes sense

“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭28:18-20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭19:5‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭4:12‬ ‭KJV‬‬
