I don't know if this is true or not, there are some scholarly articles on this that seem to make a good case for it, but I guess the label "Christian" used to be a derogatory term. In Acts 9:2, before his conversion, Paul was looking for "people of the Way" to persecute. I guess "people of the Way" (the way, the truth, the life = Jesus Christ) was what Christians originally preferred to be called.
