I see Cottage Pie is made from beef...

Cottage pie and Cumberland pie.
(Cumberland has cheese)

And I am wondering if these hand pies would sell here in the States...

And if they would sell will they make money? Can I make them fast enough to be profitable?

Beef (chuck, brisket, and all sirloin) starts at $5/lb here. ($11/kg) it only goes up from brisket, which is about half fat...and I need lean meat. Which means probably around $7/lb.

So each pie can only have 1/16th of a pound of meat in it...and still sell for $6-7 ea....that doesn't sound spectacular now does it? Ugghhhh...

Maybe if I upped the size and meat but go $8-10?

You also have to factor in labor and the use of equipment and electricity. In the end some people do it because they enjoy it :)

Well I've always enjoyed cooking...since I was 13 years old. I went to culinary school and became a chef.

Costing out menus is something I can do in my sleep...I know the financials of the food service industries so well I can do it by just guessing.
As I've been putting together the business plan I keep surprising myself by nailing the complicated numbers with a guess. I've been out of the kitchens for 20 years...but I can still get them right with a guess? Shocking myself to no end.

chicken pies are better :D
I like them too....
But I don't want to make something akin to hot pockets either....those are nasty frozen food that college kids and younger have to eat to survive... like ramen noodles....

My friend from England recently corrected me. I thought my mom loved shepherd's pie, but that's made with lamb. Since I make it with beef, it's cottage pie. Aldi has this really good shepherd's pie sauce, but I couldn't always find it when I did live near Aldi, and now there are none anywhere close.

The rest of the world eats pot pies that you can hold in your hand. They go by various names in different countries. But essentially they are a much more nutritious version of a hot pocket. They have real meat and veggies and sometimes cheese...not a lot of gravy in them...but lots of real meat.

I just did the costing on them...
It was extremely pricey to make which means that it's even more expensive to sell. Really lean beef is running around $8/lb at the moment. Pie dough made with butter is around $2/lb...
Food is outrageous currently. Probably not going to get cheaper either. Never has in the past.

Cottage pie or shepherd's pie sounds good on a cold winter day. Comfort food.

Have you tried one? I'm making soup right now.
Its essentially a self contained electronic pressure cooker.
I've never been a fan of them...

Now some of that comes from my youth when many people were having accidents with them. Pressure cookers weren't automatic and any number of things happened to people to cause them to explode. Clogged valves and etc. So I have always been hesitant to use one... even the new electronic ones.

And usually when I'm braising something I like for them to cook slower so that the integrity of the cuts is retained. Meat shreds in gravy isn't exactly going to sell very well.

For a high end Cumberland pie made with beef and cheese and gravy with the veggies...(carrots, peas, potatoes)
Chunks of meat instead of ground beef; we are talking about a retail of $12-$14 each.
I'm not sure that they will sell at that price point.

Even a burger in a sit down restaurant is $10 at a minimum lately....and likely more with fries and drink.
