I grew up in Texas and New Mexico in the 50's and 60's; the western edge of the "Bible Belt." Back then every year there were tent revivals all summer, we had the "Elk Cowboy Camp Meeting" and other events which drew hundreds of people. And in winter the revivals were somewhat smaller and moved indoors. Back then revivals usually brought churches together, even crossing denominational lines. Now though ... the last tent revival I attended was in the 80's and I helped sponsor it. The last revival was in the later 80's, and attendance was very low. Since then I've heard of few revivals, and they were far away (to be honest with this however I live in a very rural area). And that is sad. I say that because I am convinced that nothing short of a national revival movement will save this country.
In ancient times (when our Bible was written) people tended to think of salvation more in physical terms. Everyone wanted Israel because it was the crossroads to the world. But the Hebrews trusted God and He saved them from the bad guys. They failed, the land "spit them out" with the help of folks like the Assyrians and Babylonians. Today the Jews (those not believing in Jesus as the Christ) focus mostly on a national salvation. Christians focus more on a personal salvation. I think both are important, and to focus all on one or the other is dangerous. Obviously personally dangerous if we forget the personal salvation and end up at the Great White Throne Judgement. However we as a nation are responsible for what our leaders do, and we'll be held to account as a nation, the same as the Hebrews and Babylonians were in the OT. The Jews of course, those who reject their Messiah, will be held personally accountable. But many who do call Him Lord will also die (Mat 7:22). All these results are tragic and avoidable!
2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
All it would take is we, us, God's people to repent and turn back to God. Forget the sinners and everyone else: just God's people. The "saved." If WE turn back, He promises to forgive US and heal OUR land. We need a great revival, badly.
