Jesus Afraid?

Agree.

The medical term for sweating blood is "Hemitridoses." Jesus was fully man and fully God, true. But being a man he felt all the emotions and temptations we did. Yes, I believe He feared what was coming. He also would have experienced temptation, and I'm sure it occurred to Him He could run. Where He was praying was on the way to Bethany, which was just over the hilltop close to the garden where He prayed. From there straight into the wilderness, across the Rift and into the Decapolis region where He couldn't be touched by Herod or the Jewish leaders. But as fully God I do not thing He entertained that idea for a moment. Not because He couldn't have done it- He would have had free will just like us. But because His love for us was a Godly love. He knew fear, but it couldn't overcome the kind of love that endures whatever hardship for another.

he actually could have done this , instead of going to the cross but he chose to fulfill scripture and offer salvation through his impending suffering

“Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?

But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?”

Jesus also said,

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God,believe also in me. Jn.14:1

This he said shortly before his prayer in the garden. Unpleasant as knowing how terrible the physical pain would be would not have made our Lord afraid,

And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. Lk.12:4

So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. Heb.13:6

Lastly, the idea that before coming into this world, our Lord didn't feel sadness or grief is unscriptural, because we are instructed to

grieve not the holy Spirit of God, Eph.4:30 and,

the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings. Rom.8:26

How deeply does the One in whose image we are made feel?

I think it's safe to say that Jesus put those instructions into practice during
his ordeal in the garden. For sure we know he prayed about his anxiety at
least three times.

• Matt 26:42 . . He went away a second time and prayed: My Father, if it is
not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be
done.

Jesus must've been really dreading the ordeal that he was facing because he
prayed like that three times.

During the incident, an angel showed up.

• Luke 22:43 . . Now an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening
Him.

I've been curious for some time now to know exactly what that angel did to
strengthen Jesus. Did it bring him some water, or a bite of high energy food?
Possibly.

This next verse gave me a hint.

• Luke 22:44 . . And being in agony, he was praying very fervently; and his
sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground.

The Greek word translated "agony" basically refers not to pain, but to
struggle.

Well; I may be wrong about this but I suspect Jesus was right on the edge of
panic, and thinking seriously about bolting for the door-- so to speak --when
his Father sent that angel to calm him down because oftentimes when
people are in a high state of anxiety; they can't think straight. (cf. Matt
4:11)3

I always thought (my opinion) that, yes Jesus underwent much travail in the garden, but the angel came & strenghtened Him to go to the cross. Who could withstand a mock trial of unbelieving priests, endure 39 stripes, then be nailed to the cross? Besides this, Jesus had to endure receiving upon Himself the sins of the world, as well as no longer hearing from the Father? The last by itself must have been horrendous since Jesus always heard & saw what the Father did. Some of Jesus' last words were "Father, why has thou forsaken me?" I can't imagine any other feeling but absolute agony, both physically as well as emotionally.
Even with the angel's strengthening touch, Jesus couldn't last as long as the other benefactors.
Talk about someone with the world on his shoulders, I mean literally. That must have been some touch to physically strengthen Him to make it as long as He did.

I like the way that the NLT puts Mark 14:24 like this:

"My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death."

Well; I don't know about all you iron men out there, but I've been down
Jesus' road enough to know an anxiety attack (a.k.a. panic attack) when I
see one. I'm guessing that at this point in the garden, Jesus' knees were
weak, his overall vigor was ebbing, and he was feeling faint and quite
possibly almost ready to give up.

However, the Bible says that he was willing to go thru with his crucifixion
because of "the joy he knew would be his afterward". (Heb 12:2)
