I believe that Paul was encouraging them to seek spiritual gifts and at the same time correcting their misuses. This is what we should do as well. Let us correct over emphasizing while not ending up guilty of dismissing and out right forbidding which is what many also do.
Yes... I say amen to that....

"And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
Mark 16:17-18, KJV
Do we find any place else in the scripture that says anything about handling serpents and drinking poison?
Since these last few verses of Mark have always been somewhat questionable/controversial, I'm not comfortable using them as a proof text for speaking in tongues or other miraculous "signs".... I would rather go with what is common to the other gospels, and to Acts.

I, too, have heard of these verses as being questionable.

I don't know what you are saying.

Everything we say is an opinion. Even when we interpret scripture we are giving an opinion as to why we think it is the right interpretation. An opinion can be right. Having one is not wrong.

I have no idea what leftist means in this conversation. I don't really care to get into it. My main point was that no one was saying you must accept my opinion because I said so. The purpose of my response to you was to help us discuss the text in a way that explains each other's opinion as to what it means and why.

Not so.
WOW...I give no opinion if the Bible is clear....ie....Acts 2;38 Baptism is required.....the KJV Bible......that is not an opinion .

That's your opinion about Peter's conversation with some people.
It does not say that "No one, ever, who isn't baptized with water, will receive the Holy Spirit". Simply doesn't.

You probably think Jesus arose on a Sunday when the Bible clearly says he arose on Saturday.

Please ...are you calling Peter a liar?
Are you just an opinion of the entire Bible....even repentance is an...opinion? Surely I miss understand you..

I repeat Acts 2;38 is fact because of the wording and the back up here;

Baptism is Required

Peter 3: 21.... whereunto even baptism doth also now save us...

John 3:5 .......Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Acts 2;38-....Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 22;16... And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

Galations 3:26...... For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

KJV Marrk 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

KJV Matthew 3:14... But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15. Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now, for thus it becometh us to fulfil all rightesousness. Then He suffered Him.

KJV Matthew 28:19..... Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:.

Acts 8:12-18: But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.

Quote from Billy Graham that is note worthy;
....Also, to clarify I did not say remission of sin takes place at repentance. Scripture makes it clear that it occurs upon obedience to water baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus. Each is a step of faith, along with receiving the Holy Ghost, in the process of one's spiritual rebirth

.."Paul explains the doctrinal significance of what occurs when one is baptized.His explanation is found in his letter to those who had already been obedient to the command.

Paul tells the Roman Christians what actually occurred when they were/are baptized; they were baptized into His death. Being buried with Jesus into His death resulted in their sin being destroyed.

Even though Paul explains this concept, the NEW AGE RELIGION TEACHING is......... that water baptism is nothing other than a mere public display.......... And that is so far removed from the truth.

Keep in mind that Satan knows if he can continue to perpetuate that lie ...... he can keep people from entering the kingdom of God. Thus He has proven scripture which says ...in the end times there will be ...great delusions.....they are here.

Conclusion....teaching that baptism is not necessary is violation of Rev. 22;19.... And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. 20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. (Also two other books of the Bible).

THAT IS FACT.

Let me pose a question. Let's take a more recent example like Bernie Madoff. Madoff was a convicted liar, swindler and conman. Now let's suppose he had started a Ponzi scheme school based on his methods. Would it be ethical to promote him as a great entrepreneur and carry on his legacy by teaching his methods to others and treating him as a model citizen?

If this wouldn't be ethical why is it acceptable to treat Pentecostalism as valid and true? You can skirt it all you want but the fact remains the Assemblies of God itself, one of the biggest Pentecostal organizations there is, traces the genesis of the movement to 1901 and Charles Fox Parham—a know liar and religious conman. And the company he kept wasn't any better.

Some say Pentecostalism's true roots are in the day of Pentecost. Okay, just for fun let's consider this. If this is true where are the Pentecostal churches before 1901? There are many groups before that who taught the baptism in the Holy Spirit, tongues, miracles, etc; but these are groups that today Pentecostals would call cults or false religions. If they're cults and false religions what does that make Pentecostalism?
Is it possible to be Pentecostal without being a follower of Madoff, Parham, or any of the other false prophets who have tainted that name?

- Can one be saved without following any of the false prophets who claim Jesus' Name but preach a false salvation?

Is your argument not about tongues themselves, but with the fact that Pentecostals teach tongues?

- Is it ok when people who are not Pentecostal speak in tongues?

I don't follow any of those people. I follow Jesus. There's a few people whom the Lord has taught me through, but they're almost all dead.
I don't think of myself as Pentecostal or Charismatic. I'm a follower of Jesus...why do I have to be anything else?

I have read the discussions from various textual critics on it and I don't have confidence that it should be excluded.

Taking up serpents probably refers to Paul getting bit by a deadly viper and feeling no harm. Poison is probably someone trying to poison the preachers to shut them up and failing. As in supernatural protection from harm directed toward them while preaching the gospel whether that harm comes from devils or people until such a time as God would allow it. Go preach the Gospel without fear and expect many adventures of seeing God's hand in mighty miraculous ways confirm the word being preached. Don't fear their faces, and don't fear their threats, God will deliver you from all dangers.

There is enough about tongues without the passage to conclude that it was a Gift of the Holy Spirit, and God had a purpose and that it was a good purpose and not to be over emphasized but never deprecated.

Yeah, technically that was an oops on my part. But the point remains valid - Is it possible to be Pentecostal without being a follower of any of the false prophets who have tainted that name?

It was funny. And I agree with you.

Calvin in Geneva wracked up enough scandals to make Parham look innocent in comparison. Do we dismiss everything he taught as a result. Some do. But I don't think that is fair. Preachers fall. Pride goes to their heads. Does @ResidentAlien use the same measurement on the Reformed movement because of Calvin's scandals in Geneva? Probably not. I hope not. His reasons for why it is not the same thing will probably the exact same reasons that the Pentecostal would use as to why it is not fair to dismiss Pentecostalism based on Parham or any other man.

A discussion on the scriptures in question will always be the appropriate method for determining if an interpretation is biblical or has the authority of scripture behind it. No one's dirty laundry is relevant to that discussion.

In 2022 one must be careful about belonging to ANY denomination. There are great delusions in most.
Remember...they are man made and have no support/relevance to God's word as a base.
Stick with the Bible...suggest KJV 1611 edition.

Be reminded...there are only three things we need to know of the scriptures to receive eternal salvation.
WHAT ARE THEY;

1 Repentance
2 Water baptism
3 Righteous living...until the end (death)

Our faith is increased by Bible study...and prayer.....continuously.

Be blessed in God's word.

timed out....

Here is an example;

Many teach that baptism is not necessary (note; one cannot find any such teaching before 1960's..why?);

Baptism is Required

Peter 3: 21.... whereunto even baptism doth also now save us...

John 3:5 .......Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

No, it's impossible if they follow Parham's false doctrine of baptism in the Holy Spirt and signs and wonders; this is what people can't seem to get their head's around. Parham didn't just "taint" the name, it was spoiled rotten doctrine from the get-go and Pentecostals adopted it.

How do I know it's rotten? Because it's source was rotten—Parham.
