people that are stingy are not cheapskates as they dont skite about being cheap or getting a bargain...cheapskates just love spending money on cheap things

A miserly/stingy person is more like a Scrooge in that they will boast about how much money they have but not spend it or be generous with it

I have come across people like that, a lot of business owners are like that, or they will only spend if they can get it all back...they also buy only things that they think they can sell for a higher price later...and boast about it

I consider myself frugal but I also like to buy quality items, and I always try to buy these items on sale. For clothes I aim to buy natural fiber or mostly consisting of natural fiber. Too many clothes even expensive ones are 100% polyester. That makes me so upset when 100% polyester items are sold at a high price. I also do not like fake leather so I buy real leather and the items last a long time. For jewelry I stick to 100% sterling silver as this doesn't rust, so I don't buy costume jewelry anymore. I am generally lead a minimalist lifestyle so I avoid buying items I don't need. That is my definition of frugal - being reasonable with spending, looking for value, and not buying items I don't need.

But, my friend who bought the cheap jewellery would you say she was a cheapskate or being frugal or both. Now Im confused.

btw I never buy jewellery for myself, all I have is just what is given to me.

I dont consider it necessary to buy jewellery for myself, not cos Im cheap its just its not something I like to wear everyday. I have also been given cheap and expensive jewellery, but I never really balk at the cost of it because it was a gift...and a gift is precious no matter what the cost...for some it is the thought that counts

in my culture jade is precious and of course so is gold
Jade is actually quite a rare and precious stone (in nz its called greenstone or pounamu)
My mother was actually FORCED to wear a jade braclet that she can never take off. Apparently has protective power. The more green it is the better apparently, but some believe stones have healing properties too.

though gold, has actually been quite devalued as people have become so greedy for it that mining it has destroyed a lot of the forests etc.

and used for such common things as rings (Lord of the Rings anyone?) that now everyone can wear their money on their finger.

if you wearing just an imitation of these things its just maybe you are pretending or acting in a play.

But for me its more that their colour is of value, like I dont particularly care if the blue ring my friend was wearing was a real sapphires or not. It was just a beautiful colour like a sparkly deep royal blue.

Pearls of course are beautiful but I do know that it takes a lot to grow a pearl in an oyster...and to string a whole lot of them to make a necklace well that is extravagant. But if you wear a pearly nailpolish or fish scale lipstick I suppose has the same effect....

If your friend gave you the $2 jewelry when she could afford a higher price I would say she is a cheapskate, unless the $2 jewelry had a special meaning (say you like sunflowers, and the pendent/ring top was a sunflower). The stinginess aspect is more clear. Especially if she buys herself more expensive jewelry.

Since she bought it for herself, it is more unclear....she could be either frugal or a cheapskate.

well my friends cannot afford to buy expensive jewellery they are all poor.

Uh... No, yeah, I know some poor people who are MAJOR cheapskates!

Then I know some poor people who are very generous with the little that they do have.

What you have, or don't have, doesn't deny you the opportunity to be a cheapskate. It just causes others to notice it more. Nobody would have even noticed if the widow had NOT dropped in her two mites, if Jesus had not called attention to it.

I bought a $4.50 deluxe cheeseburger burger from Wendys, it was...meh (needed flavour like salt) but maybe I should have bought the $18.00 mozarella one and boasted about that instead. $18?!

I was expecting because the burger was described as 'deluxe' that it would be value for money?! So I guess I was being a frugal on the burgers but actually didnt want to boast about it cos it didnt taste very good. If I was a cheapskate I would have said the burger was great and its only $4.50!

In that case I just got what I paid for and my stomach stopped rumbling. I also bought chilli and chips but forgot that the chips was meaning corn chips not fried potato chips and that was $6.00 so the meal came to $11.50

Should I have just gone for the $18.00 burger? But then that might have been too much for my stomach (and wallet) to handle.
my friend bought her own meal which was a cheese advocado burger and a cup of tea. it would have worked out the same... My friend is dutch so she went dutch, I dont think shes ever paid for me ...unless i actually forgot my purse.

while my other (cheap and poor) friends are always shouting me (taking turns paying) and I them, and sometimes we share meals. hmm maybe depends on how hungry you are.


We saw an older released movie and that I found which was free download online, while she was wanting to see a new one in the cinema but we looked at the trailer and I though Im not going to be able to stay awake through that one and pay $17 for it! so we stayed in and watched the free movie, lol

so SHE boasted about that. Cheapskate? or frugal.

my other friend wanted to go to the gym it was $15 for me as Im not a member I said what about going to the park instead its free and there is gym equipment there
but it seems shed rather go the gym even though i would have to pay for myself and she would get the concession. Is that being cheapskate?

I don't always go with stingy friends lol....because it stressed me out going out with them...

Most of them, they are very calculative,they bargain so much, they always ask you to pay for them and give you excuses like,they forgot their purse,their money not enough etc. they will request nice meals but won't pay lol not because they don't have money or they dont earn like you do...

One neighbour told me he has a 'friend' who always 'forgets' his wallet and I said to him that person is NOT your friend

But he didnt listen and kept on being friends with him and being super stressed out and complaining about him cos he felt sorry for him. Once or twice ok but if they kept doing that I'm like no

but her excuse is that shes my mum.

the thing is since I dont earn much anyway I not really friends with a lot of people who CAN afford things to judge whether they are being stingy since they dont really go out with me

but I do know that in school the teachers earn so much more than support staff but when they ask for $35 to go out for a party its nothing to them but a LOT for the rest of us not on their salaries.

my sister and brother on odd ocassion has shouted me travel tickets and thats really nice otherwise Id never get to go as they earn so much more, but they are family, friends tend to pay their own way or we just dont go. I know one year had a family holiday and was broke and would not have gone, cos couldnt afford to. But sis paid it, and when I did find a job I paid her back...though it took a few months to find a job.

I dont like to be in debt to people but if they organising the whole travel and are offering you a place and really want you to come then it would be rude to refuse if you can make it.

When it comes to jewelry and clothing and other accessories....these things are worn as a public statement to those who see you as to who you are.
"Clothes make the person " is very true. So devalued jewelry is a statement of low self worth. "I'm not all that" is what she meant. (I'm not a high society person)

And I'm not above helping out those whom I know are struggling financially. My Sister in law is one....she just got out from school with a bachelor's degree....she doesn't have a regular job yet. She is going back for her masters....so she is broke. So we will help her out and not think a thing of it.

As far as going out to eat...I really never like it. I worked for decades in the finest restaurants in the city. It's always sad to me what they call food and the prices they charge...well what the national chains charge. Independent restaurants tend to do much better...but not always.

I'm not exactly a cheapskate....but I do want the value for that hard earned money.

Work and workplaces are an exchange of services for money....a business transaction. Employers will gladly accept a freebie but usually don't give any. I don't work for free. I'm not their slave....I am God's. They only rent me for a price.
