Jesus vs the religious leaders

John 10: “Most truly I say to you, the one who does not enter into the sheepfold through the door but climbs in by another way, that one is a thief and a plunderer.

- Jesus compares the religious leaders to thieves and plunderers!

- When we remember that they are only looking for their own interests, it makes sense!

- So many people died or became slaves because of them when Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans!

- How many will follow the same end because of them when God puts an end to this world?

John's gospel has many themes.
One of which is Identity and parentage.

There are many "I AM" statements by Jesus.
Verse 12 of the first chapter explains how someone can be a child of God's.
Like Jesus is God's son...who always was.

You are right and I can add:

- Most truly i say to you

- And where I am

- Now I am troubled

- And what should I say

- Why I have come to this hour

- And yet I, if I am lifted up from the earth

- I have come

- I do not judge him

- I came

- The word that I have spoken

- For I have not spoken of my own initiative

- And I know

- So whatever I speak, I speak...

But it was a special time, his death was approaching!

A bit like a testament before his death!

Jesus vs the religious leaders

John 9: Jesus then says: “For this judgment I came into this world, that those not seeing might see and those seeing might become blind.” Those of the Pharisees who are with him hear these things, and they say to him: “We are not blind also, are we? Jesus says to them: “if you were blind, you would have no sin. But now you say, “We see.” Your sin remains.”

- Jesus is clear the religious leaders are blind because of their attitude and their pride (we can say the same of kings).

- They don’t want to listen!

- They prefer to defend their own interest!

- They are condemned!

- No way to escape their judgment!

- Their guilt is double because they mislead the people who follow them!

- So many bad examples!

- They are deaf and blind!

- They will never understand!

Jesus vs the religious leaders

John 10: But the one who enters through the door is the shepherd or the sheep. The doorkeeper opens to this one, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought all his own out, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice. They will by no means follow a stranger but will flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers.

- Jesus is the shepherd, the religious leaders are the strangers!

- The sheep follow him, listen to him!

- He knows the name of each one!

- He leads them out!

- But they will by no means follow a stranger!

- On the contrary they flee from him

- Because they don’t want to get into trouble!

Jesus vs the religious leaders

John 10: The hired man, who is not a shepherd and to whom the sheep do not belong, sees the wolf coming and abandons the sheep and flees – and the wolf snatches them and scatters them – because he is a hired man and does not care for the sheep.

- THE SHEPHERD vs no shepherds at all!

- THE SHEEP BELONG TO THE SHEPHERD!

- WHEN THE WOLF IS COMING THE HIRED MAN ABANDONS THE SHEEP AND FLEES!

- He is a HIRED MAN and DOES NOT CARE FOR THE SHEEP!

- THE HIRED MAN / ABANDONS THE SHEEP / FLEES

- It is difficult to be more clear!

- Do you need the real SHEPHERD or the HIRED MAN!

Jesus vs the religious leaders

John 11:
Jesus has waited for Lazarus’ death to resurrect him. When he sees Lazarus’ sisters weeping, he can’t avoid weeping too even if he is going to resurrect him. But Jesus is sensitive, he feels something when people suffer. And he goes to the tomb and before resurrecting Lazarus, he prays God. As a consequence, many of the Jews put faith in him.

- We know that Jesus cured many people!

- Even among the Jews, many could see his miracles!

- Some put faith in him, others no!

- Those who didn’t put faith in Jesus knew he was the Christ!

- But they preferred to keep their positions!

- They looked for their personal interests!

- Those who put faith in Jesus had a better disposition of the heart!

- Translation has always been a big problem, a slight difference with what is originally written and the meaning tells something else!

- It happens so many times in the Bible!

- In Greek, there is a big difference when you use a word with or without the article!

- I don't know why many translators make the mistake!

- Is it on purpose?

- But a mistake is a mistake!

- And we don't need to be specialists!

- Of course, when you study languages, you are more conscious about the problem!

- And many people don't care about!

- Who is responsible?

John 12:32 - What/Who Does the "All" refer to
John 12:32.. Jesus speaking here obviously, "And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.” (NASB)

Who or what are the referents for the "All" in this passage and what is the rationale/evidence behind that opinion?

The word in the Greek for all here is πάντας (pantas) whose root is πᾶς (pas).
Vines Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words says of πᾶς:
When used without the articles, it means, "every kind or variety." When used with the article, it means "whole or the totality of persons or things referred to."
Analytical Lexicon of the Greek New Testament (Friberg) says:
with summarizing significance, designating everything belonging to a class all (manner of), every kind of, all sorts of
The word "all" in the verse has no article so it means "all kinds of men", so it isn't talking about every single man (universalism), it just denotes a broad spectrum.

Good question! Most English translations take παντας as "all men," or "all people" simply because παντας is an adjective functioning substantively, and it makes sense to render it that way in English. Usually when we have a substantival adjective we want to look for an antecedent noun, but in this case there is no easily identifiable antecedent. Our theological choices might be 1) people, 2) elect/believers, or 3) things. The answer will depend on what Jesus means by "draw" (ἑλκύσω). The verb ἕλκω is used six times in the GNT, with five of those instances occurring in John and four of them having very physical meanings (e.g John 18:10, 21:6). Many times people try to conflate this instance of draw with John 6:44- "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him." There isn't a strong argument for that textually, however. I think a better argument is found in the comparison between Jesus reference to being lifted up from the earth here and his description of himself as the snake lifted up on the pole in John 3:14. Just as the snake was lifted up and all who looked to it were healed, so Jesus will be lifted up and all who look to him will be healed. This is the drawing. It is an effectual drawing which accomplishes that which the Son was sent to accomplish, one which glorifies the Father (12:28) by bringing many sons to glory.

Jesus vs the religious leaders

John 12: Jesus goes back to Bethany where he resurrected Lazarus. There is an evening meal at the house of Lazarus, Martha and Mary. Mary puts an expensive perfumed oil on Jesus’ feet and wipes his feet dry with her hair. Many Jews come to see Jesus and Lazarus. The chief priests conspire to kill Lazarus because many Jews put their faith in Jesus. The next day Jesus is received in Jerusalem as king of Israel. Hid disciples will understand what was written about him after his death. Jesus tells his disciples that the time has come for him to die and be resurrected. The Jews want to know why according to the Law the Christ must remains forever and Jesus says he must be lifted and they also want to know who the Son of man is. But the Jews don’t want to put faith in him. Many rulers put faith in Jesus but they don’t want to acknowledge it because of the Pharisees.

- Again the Jews know who Jesus is but they don’t want to put faith in him because they wan to keep their power!

- Those who put faith in him don’t acknowledge it because they want to keep their power!

- It is always the same story!

- The religious leaders prefer to sell themselves to keep their power!

- They don’t belong to God!

- It is always a personal choice!

- Looking for God or for power!

- The religious leaders usually prefer power!

- This world is superficial and the majority prefers superficiality!

- They think they can get everything without doing anything!

- But it has never work like that!

- God’s word is not man’s word!

- But anyone receives his own reward on time!

- God’s law always applies!

- It is only a question of time!

- When it’s too late, it’s too late!

- There is no surprise!

- It is written and it has been written for so long!

- It is only necessary to open the Bible and read it carefully again and again!

Jesus vs the religious leaders

John 13: Therefore, if I, the Lord and Teacher, washes your feet, you also should wash the feet of one another. For I set the pattern for you, that just as I do to you, you should also do. Most truly I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.

- Every religious leader wants to become the top leader!

- It is the same in politics and business!

- Power is not to share!

- It is so different from Jesus!

- Only wolves!

- God’s world is going to be totally different!

- We can’t imagine how it is going to be!

- It is necessary to prepare now to be able to adapt!

- We must prepare our mind!

- Only one leader, God and nobody will be able to oppose him!

- Only two options: accept God’s authority or die!

- Those who think to behave like the Israelites will be eradicated straight away!

looking for Jesus

John 2: So after making a whip of ropes, he drives all those with the sheep and cattle out of the temple, and he pours out the coins of the money changers and overturns their tables. And he says to those selling the doves: “Take these things away from here! Stop making the house of my Father a house of commerce!” His disciples recall that it is written: “The zeal for your house will consume me.”

- Man’s tradition against God’s word!

- Think of that: the Jews have no shame!

- They let the merchants sell animals inside God’s temple!

- You just think of that and you understand that they only teach man’s tradition which opposes completely God’s word!

- Then you may understand Jesus’ anger!

- They don’t even respect God’s house!

- Shame on them!

looking for Jesus

John 3: Jesus replies: “Are you a teacher of Israel and yet do not know these things? Most truly I say to you, what we know we speak, and what we have seen we bear witness to, but you do not receive the witness we give. If I have told you earthly things and you still do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

- Think of that : Jesus tells a teacher of Israel and he doesn’t understand him !

- When he is with his disciples, he uses progressive teaching, yet they don’t understand him !

- They need him to die and go away and then they start to understand !

- Moreover, they receive holy spirit to help them understand !

- Do you understand Jesus’ message about what we have to do to understand his message ?

- We can’t others do the job ?

- We need to work hard individually !

- And nobody knows better !

- It’s just a question of working hard !

- If you don’t do it as when you eat and drink and sleep daily, how can you work hard ?

- How will you understand ?

- Jesus used to teach every day !

looking for Jesus

John 4: Jesus asks a Samaritan woman for a drink. The woman is surprised bcause the Jews don’t do that. Then Jesus starts to speak with her. Then he teaches her about everlasting life. And he tells her about the five husbands she had and the last man she is with is not her husband. So she understands Jesus is a prophet. And he tells her that the hour is coming when the true worshipers will worship God with spirit and truth. Then he tells her he is Messiah. Then the disciples arrive and they don’t understand why he is speaking with a Samaritan woman. And the woman comes back with more men to be taught by Jesus. Then he tells his disciples than teaching and doing God’s will is more important than eating; And many Samaritans put faith in Jesus and they ask him to stay with them and he stays for two days. And more Samaritans put faith in him.

- Jesus decides to speak with this Samaritan woman because he knows her heart!

- He knows she has been married many times and that she now lives with a man who is not her husband!

- But he has nothing to do with prejudices!

- And in fact, she accepts his message and she helps others to accept his message!

- The disciples can’t understand because they see with man’s eyes!

- Jesus will have a lot of work to do with them but he knows their hearts too!

- He has come for the Jews but in this case he makes an exception!

- He always can adapt to the situation!

- A lot to learn from his attitude!

Looking for Jesus

John 5: But one man was there who had been sick for 38 years. 6 Seeing this man lying there and being aware that he had already been sick for a long time, Jesus said to him: “Do you want to get well?”

- Jesus is conscious of man’s pain and sufferance!

- He is also conscious that he has spent a lot of years ill!

- Now participating in God’s creation is one thing!

- But coming down the earth and living as a human being is something else!

- Jesus could feel directly and personally human pain and sufferance!

- He could see it with his own eyes and through human eyes!

- He could also share their pain and sufferance!

-There is nothing better than participating!

The question Jesus asked is especially intriguing.

"Do you want to be well? "

And as you look at that question....it becomes more.
If you have a habit of being sick...to where it defines you. What are you going to do if you are made well? A whole new set of behaviors is going to be expected of you.

People who have gone in for gastric bypass surgery or Lasix surgery realize that they have issues without the weight or eyeglasses.

They don't know what to do with themselves anymore.
Most that get gastric bypass surgery usually end up divorced from their spouses. Sure they lost the weight...but now they are divorced as well. And then they deliberately overeat until they can put the weight back on.
Most that get the Lasix surgery don't feel comfortable until they get some sort of glasses to wear....even if they don't really need them.

It is the question of century.

Do you want to be well?

So many people say "nope".

https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1108656- well or sound, whole, healthy

Chronic diseases, particularly cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory disease, account for more than 50% of all deaths worldwide. Tobacco use, poor diet, and physical inactivity are among the major risk factors contributing to this disease burden. Yet even as the harmful impact of these diseases on health and economies strengthens and spreads globally, there is still only limited public health, financial, and political support for programs aimed at their prevention. One reason for this neglect has been the belief by governments and philanthropists that chronic diseases are afflictions of affluent populations who have led a life of sloth. In reality, these diseases are now global problems that have been driven by profound changes in consumption patterns. Ubiquitous marketing of tobacco and unhealthy food introduces children to (and in the case of tobacco, addicts them to) lifestyles that greatly elevate their disease risk. Rapid changes in transport, work, and leisure activities have led to a global collapse in physical activity levels. Overall, unhealthy choices have become the easy choices.
Already, chronic diseases exert a significant negative impact on the health and economies of developing countries. A recent World Bank analysis of how best to improve health in Europe and Central Asia concluded that measures to control CVD would produce more gains in life expectancy than would measures to address the Millennium Development Goals* that focus on selected infectious diseases and maternal and child health. This finding probably applies to many of the 4 billion people living in low- and middle-income countries. About 3 million deaths from CVD occur annually in both India and China. One million tobacco-related deaths occur annually in China and 700,000 in India. With 1 in 5 children in the world now smoking and 1 in 10 classified as overweight or obese, future prospects regarding CVD and type 2 diabetes are grim. Because chronic diseases diminish worker productivity, investor returns in developing countries will be affected, which in turn will likely affect the growth of countries within the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Recent reports by investment banks have raised concerns that transnational corporations and pension funds face future risks from the rise in obesity rates.
