We may all talk about being romantic or you we like romance..

But, can we define it? Or, is one person's romance, another person's pet peeve?

What is the essence of romance?

Pet peeve in my case. I regard it as a modern invention. It was became "fashionable" during the Renaissance. It is NEVER even mentioned in the Bible. Frankly I think it is a disease of youth, and possibly the WORST foundation for a marriage.

I'll have to remember this if I ever have to buy a woman something on Valentine's Day.

Valentines Day was originally a Christian holiday celebrating the martyrdom of St Valentine who married people in defiance of the Roman Caesar, who at the time, had made marriage illegal.

Where the rest of the claptrap came from I have no idea.

Yes, I often try to remind people about St. Valentine. He was also killed because of what he was doing. I don't like the commercialization of it either. It makes my stomach turn. But you're a woman. Shouldn't you be supporting it?

Pfft! No I do not. I am pained by the commercialization of all the Christian holidays in this country

What was he doing aside form preaching the Bible and marrying people?

OK, I'll answer since I helped hijack your thread. Romance to me means impromptu gestures of affection showing the woman I love how much I think about her and how passionately I feel about her.

Jacob worked for 14 years before he could be with the woman that he loved. THAT IS ROMANTIC!

David collected a bounty on over 200 Philistines so that he could marry Saul's Daughter Michal, also incredibly romantic.

Samson, loved his GF so much that he told her his only vulnerability, tragically romantic.

Have any of you ever read the book of Ruth?

Romance is the outward application of one's inward feelings toward someone.

What is romance? Read the Song of Solomon. Pretty well sums it up for me. :)

That is still in the Bible, right? ;)

Mmmm yep I think so, lol. Probably one of the best sermon series I have sen on the SoS, is Mark Driscoll 'the peasant princess'

Liamson's quote sums it up nicely also.

Romance is the outward application of one's inward feelings toward someone.

I agree, Phil. It is a good quote, Liamson :) And, since Solomon had the gift of wisdom and what...900+ wives??? If he wrote a whole book about it, it must be pretty important, huh? :)

These are practically the same.

I wonder what the writer of Song of Solomon would say about Romance not being in the Bible. Or even Ruth.

Romance changes with time. One of my cousins once said that for her, she was all into the flowers and stuff at the beginning of her relationship with her husband. Now she consider him just helping her around the house as romantic. Because it shows that he loves her.
