Hi Everyone,
You might remember the old children's show, "Lamb Chop's Play-Along" that put this lovely little ear worm into everyone's heads:
These past few months I have been spending most of my free time writing and studying, and among my scattering of notebooks, papers, and highlighter is a plain black Bic Cristal pen with a clear base that has looked "empty" for at least 2 weeks. But yet, it keeps right on writing, despite my constant, daily use. Every morning I wonder if this will be finally be the day when this "super pen" gives up the very last drop of ink.
This seemingly insignificant pen made me think of a friend I had in college who had an old Volkswagen Jetta (car) that, to any outsider, would seem like it was on it's last legs (wheels.) But that thing literally took every kind of beating -- and just kept on running. She racked up countless miles (and it was already well over the 100,000 mark, though I can't remember exactly by how much she drove it through every kind of bad weather and in all extremes; she got into an accident that probably should have totaled the car (she was fine, praise God,) but yet that thing kept right on going -- and we finally just started calling it, "The Super Jetta."
She would come into work on Mondays and we'd all ask her, "How did The Super Jetta hold up this weekend?" Unfortunately, I lost touch with her, but I have often wondered how much longer after college the infamous Super Jetta kept running, or if she traded it in before it finally conked out. It was one of those vehicles that was an absolute legend of its time.
There was no doubt she had gotten her money's worth out of that car -- kind of like I've certainly gotten my money's worth out of this humble little ink pen (will TODAY be the day it finally gives up the goat???) I have a stack of notes I have to go through and rewrite, so will THIS actually be The Final Countdown?!
What about you?
* What are some things (or even people) in your life that truly "went the distance" -- and then some? Have you ever had anything go the extra mile like that since?
* Have you ever had a product, person, or situation that you were betting against ("That's never going to work/last") but discovered that you were wrong, and the outcome totally shocked you?
* If you've ever had something that completely outperformed your expectations, did you try to replace it when it finally gave out? Was the replacement just as good, or was it a "once in a lifetime" experience?
I know it's a lighter topic and it's open to anyone, but this pen brought back some fond memories, and now it has me wondering about all of yours.
