John Four:1-26

1 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,

2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)

3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.

4 And he must needs go through Samaria.

5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:

18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and
who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of
him, and he would have given thee living water.

* The point to note about this particular species of water is that it's not for
bathing, nor for laundry, nor for baptism, nor for irrigation; it's specifically
for drinking.

Jesus related the water to his person. Now I have to ask: what is it about his
person that relates him to the living water? in other words: had the woman
known who he really was, then what exactly would've been in her knowledge
that would've prompted her to ask him for living water? Is there something
said about this in the Old Testament?

I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean.
The living water that Jesus spoke of is not for washing; it is specifically for
drinking. Plus, it does not come from an outside source, rather, from within
one's own self as a perpetual artesian gusher.

The Living Water Jesus spoke of is not for drinking, but Spiritual cleansing.

Nor does it originate in one's own self :)

“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

“worship him in spirit”

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”
‭‭John‬ ‭6:63‬ ‭

“and in truth.”

“Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.”
‭‭John‬ ‭18:37‬ ‭

The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.”

How did she know this ?

Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles….: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.

He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭42:1, 3-4‬ ‭KJV‬

Hearken unto me, my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: for a law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people.

My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, and mine arms shall judge the people; the isles shall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust.”
‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭51:4-5‬ ‭KJV‬‬

She knew because the prophets had been foretelling that Jesus would come and give the world the true judgements of God and give thy n the new spirit he had been promising

Yes. In Jeremiah -

[God says]“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water" Jeremiah 2:13

[Jeremiah says of God], “Lord, you are the hope of Israel; all who forsake you will be put to shame. Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust because they have forsaken the Lord, the spring of living water.” Jeremiah 17:13

The No.1 concern of hiker trash working their way along the Pacific Crest
Trail is water; especially the southwest portion which takes them thru two
very large arid regions in California's outback.

Well; Jesus was talking about something much better than a canteen; which
eventually needs refilling. The "well of water" he spoke of would be inside
the woman providing her with an endless supply of drinking water so that
dehydration would never be a concern.

Of course Jesus wasn't talking about literal H2O, but he spoke with the
woman in terms with which she could easily relate. No doubt when the
woman came back with some of the men from her community, he explained
himself all in full. (John 7:37-39)

This is something I should have looked up long ago as my early concerns with 'Heavenly' ways brought this woman to mind. My belief is she symbolizes all of us in our inordinate lusts and infidelities.

Samaritan woman at the well - Wikipedia

The wiki article says In Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic traditions, she is venerated as a saint with the name Photine (Φωτεινή), meaning "luminous [one]".

To me the translation of Photine should be 'illuminated one', as she saw the 'light', (Jesus). She was illuminated. Or possibly translated as 'enlightened'. Someone familiar with translating Greek could advise on this.

The article interprets the passages theme as relating to either 'betrothal' or Jesus as 'giver of living water', as here

Consider the excellence of this living water, which is Divine grace, and which Christ promises to His faithful servants. " He that shall drink of the water that I will give him, shall not thirst forever." It quenches, therefore, forever, the thirst of the soul, and satisfies it. The soul then no longer thirsts after earthly waters, that is, the pleasures of this world. It becomes a fountain of all good to the soul, ever flowing and giving merit to our actions. " It springs up to everlasting life" (John iv. 14), elevating our thoughts to heaven and heavenly joys, of which it is a pledge. Say, therefore, with the Samaritan woman, " Give me this water, that I may not thirst."[14]

I am not certain what the author of the Wiki passage is referring to by "Divine grace". I don't think this is the same as the possibilities I propose. For my take, the living water theme is close, but I like to think that the 'living water' indicates The Spirit which quickens and enlightens our spirit or soul. I don't know if this would be The Holy Spirit or as the authors "Divine grace" or is this one of the seven Spirits as here in

Revelation 1:4 John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;

Photine was immediately quickened and illuminated according to the passage. The quickening seems to be indicated here.

John 4:28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, 29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

Too, would the words, "....is not this the Christ?" possibly be exclamatory? My understanding is she was excited and delighted. Probably just the fact that a Jew would talk to her gave a 'shock' and proceeded from there to the 'realization' that was not at all anticipated by her. I don't know if this occurrence is recognized as a miracle by scholars or anyone else, but I see it as such and accords with this passage.

John 4: 4 And he must needs go through Samaria

The above passage indicates that Jesus knew in advance that Photine would be coming to Jacob's well. Miraculous. Jesus in a way drew or had drawn Photine there by the work of the Holy Spirit.

Just to be in the presence of Jesus and admit your transgressions when they are presented to you, is an 'illuminating' or 'enlightening' experience.

My take on the Samaritan woman at the well.

My take on the Samaritan woman at the well.
I like your take but agree to disagree.

It wasnt her sin but what her sin had done to her.
In that day the gathering of water was a chore for woman ideally first thing in the morning.
All the woman would gather together to do this task....notice she was alone? ....mid day.
Jesus being a jew let alone a rabbi that was now alone with a women in public...unlawful.
I believe jesus was led by the holy spirit to the well to sit and wait untill she showed up.
I really cant see this woman being a prisoner of her sin being led to the well but i know the Lord will meet us right where we are.

Just a few things that need some thought.
