There was a man in Corinth who had his father's wife. It doesn't say whether his father died and he took her as his own wife, or if his father divorced or abandoned her, or what happened. It doesn't call her his mother, but his father's wife. This was forbidden in the Old Testament. Having one's father's wife, certain child sacrifices, sex with animals, adultery, same-sex sexual activities were all sins for which Gentiles were drive out of the land. And the apostles wrote to Gentiles to 'abstain from fornication.'

This was a man who was a part of the assembly, not an outsider. The church in Corinth had not dealt with it, so Paul had passed judgment. He told them when they were assembled with Paul being present in spirit and the power of the Lord Jesus Christ:

I Corinthians 5
5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

This was to save the Spirit on the day of the Lord Jesus, to keep the leaven of malice and wickedness out of the body, and they were not to keep company with such a person or to eat with him.

So the questions are would delivering him over to Satan save his spirit? Is that implied in verse 5? How would it save his spirit?

Perhaps the best way to understand what happens when one is delivered to Satan is to experience being delivered to Satan. Not that anyone should intentionally provoke or test God like that, but clearly this man in Corinth wasn’t going to understand anything else, as is the case with many people today.

The intent was to save his spirit so the being delivered to Satan was disciplinary in nature. I believe he would have come under quite a bit of demonic oppression and spiritual attacks with no help from God or the holy angels until he came back in repentance.

Sometimes people need a wake up call like that, but the end result is a stronger, wiser, and more refined Christian.

Yes. Satan can only destroy the body. God can destroy the body and the soul… some spirits of men require a lot of discipline…destruction of the body and sorrow to the soul.

Let’s face it, I didn’t repent and turn to Jesus Christ because everything was so wonderful in my life…I was in sorrow and bitterness of soul when I cried out to Jesus Christ, amen.(y)

First of all, the father of the man who sinned was apparently yet alive because Paul said the following:

"Wherefore, though I wrote unto you, I did it not for his cause that had done the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered wrong, but that our care for you in the sight of God might appear unto you." (II Corinthians 7:12)

In this case, the one "that suffered wrong" was this man's father, but Paul said that he didn't write to the Corinthians "for his cause" which implies that he was yet alive at the time of Paul's writing.

Anyhow, when someone is living in sin, the church ought not to keep them under their umbrella of protection, so to speak, or ought not to condone such a wicked lifestyle. Instead, the offending party ought to be separated from the fellowship, or delivered unto Satan, that they might feel some remorse for what they have done, and hopefully repent. Thankfully, such was the case with this man, and he was ultimately returned not only to fellowship with the church, but to fellowship with Christ himself who is the head of the church.

I believe satan was code for the worldly authorities of the roman empire at the time..

Jesus is the One who saves his spirit. Period.

Paul feared this comfortable permissiveness the whole congregation had with this terrible sin would spread and infect others. That was the primary reason for the judgement to give him over to Satan.

As others have said, Satan can be given permission to destroy a believers body, but not his soul.

It is interesting to note that whatever happened to this man by Satan, caused him to repent, and Paul told the Church to forgive and comfort him. He is restored, but likely forfeited some rewards.
Remember Rueben committed this same sin. He was NOT kicked out of the family, but he DID lose his birthright given to the 1st born.(rewards).

This is a cautionary account that many of today's Churches do not heed. They boast about being "inclusive" to the point of marrying homosexuals, and allowing other grievous sins.

This is about discipline with in the Church. Its excommunication for the purpose of causing a person to be grieved and repent.

It wouldn't necessarily save his spirit.
Satan is the accuser. Paul told them to hand him over to a world that accuses, convicts and condemns criminals.
Apparently, the man initially had no remorse.

he was living in sin and wouldnt repent paul eas saying turn him away and leave him to himself don’t associate with him let sorrow take him down and stop him from serving sin he can be saved

the guy needed this part but refused and instead was trying to keep living in sin and also be a professing Christian at the same time while sleeping with his fathers wife Paul’s taking about the destruction of the flesh

“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die:

but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭8:12-13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

can you see how if one continues living in sin or “the works of the flesh “ that’s leading to death ? But if they follow the spirit it will put the flesh to death and they will live ?

it important Toni sweetens oils terminology so when he’s talking about “living in the flesh “it’s this

“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5:16-21‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The man your referring to was openly sinning Paul’s point is he’s on the road to death he needs to be turned away until he repents of his sin

what’s interesting is the second letter concerning this just as Paul commands then to turn this man away for his evil actions so the “ will of the flesh “ is destroyed in the second epistle he makes it known how agonizing it was for him to say that d the n he relents and tells them to now accept the. Man donsatan didn’t win his soul through overwhelming sorrow

this sort of helps add to the understanding Paul writes a second letter and addresses this man and the church which was approving of his sin again

“For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you. Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many. So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.

Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him. For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭2:4, 6-9‬ ‭

he continues on a bit

“For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season. Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭7:8-10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It’s about the importance and absolute need for repentance within the church Sorrow isn’t pleasant but had Paul not addressed this in the Corinthians church no one would have known it was a vile sin and not allowed in Christ and no one would have been made sorry fornthier sin d no none would have repented fornthier sins

the man was sinning Paul heard about it and was upset deeply and wrote a scathing letter to them pointing out thier wrongdoings and also the man himself this is part of Paul’s ministry it brings people to repentance so they don’t die

Paul didn’t want the man to perish

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:9‬ ‭

if we keep living by the sins of the flesh and pursuing and serving those things we’re fooling ourselves we have to let the flesh deeds die and take up the fruits of the spirit found in the gospel

This is just another example of how serious and deadly Paul considered sin in the church

My view on this

Here is the thing ----it is so confusing when you just take a piece of Scripture and try to make a false doctrine out of it ------or try to understand the one line piece of Scripture without knowing the whole truth -----

First off ---if you go back to 1 Corinthians 1 -----you see Paul is writing to the CHURCH of Corinth ----

So we are speaking of Believers here ---not unbelievers -----this makes a huge difference in the understanding of this Scripture you quote -----Believers are saved as the Holy Spirit is indwelt in the Believer ----so they are heaven bound -----but the Flesh of the person is still corrupt ----so the flesh here refers to the mind -----Satan attacks the mind of the believer

We are in charge of renewing our minds to what God's will is for us -----we are Carnal minded ----we still do what the Flesh desires -even though we are saved ------Romans 12:2 ----do not be conformed to the world's thinking ---renew your mind to God's way of thinking -----that is our JOB -----

The scripture you speak of is 1 Corinth 5:5 -----so you need to read verses 1-5 ----to understand the scripture in verse 5

I say -------
This person is a Believer already saved spiritually has the indwelling of the Holy Spirit ---
---but the mind remains corrupt -----incest is happening ---

The man is allowing his flesh ---(a way of thinking ) to have dominion over him -----we are to crucify the flesh and not allow it to reign over us ----and this man was not interested in doing that -----

This is the scripture 1 Corinth 5 verse 1_5

Dealing With a Case of Incest

5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife.

2 And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this?

3 For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus on the one who has been doing this.

4 So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present,

5 hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh,[a][b] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.

verses 6 and 7 ----are also important because it shows how wickedness can affect the Church if not dealt with ----
----------------------------------------
I say ------in verse 2 we see the Church was putting up with the nonsense of this man -----and it is bad for the Church to harbour a person who is saved but not willing to advance in their growth of walking in the Spirit -----as it can eventually influence others in the Church -----so Paul is saying this man need to learn a lesson so he needs to be excommunicated and handed over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh -----so his Spirit may be saved on the Day of the Lord ---this man was falling away to the point of no return ------

HEBREWS 6:6
AMP
and then have fallen away—it is impossible to bring them back again to repentance, since they again nail the Son of God on the cross [for as far as they are concerned, they are treating the death of Christ as if they were not saved by it], and are holding Him up again to public disgrace.

---Satan came to kill ---steal and destroy mankind -----so they are handing the man over to Satan to destroy him ---so that on the day of the Lord his Spirit will be saved -----as he was backsliding to the point of no return

The Greek word for Destruction in this scripture ------

Strong's Concordance
olethros: destruction, death

for the destruction of the flesh, said of the external ills and troubles by which the lusts of the flesh are subdued and destroyed, 1 Corinthians 5:5

when i was rebelling, my Dad told me he began praying that no matter what it took for God to allow it to awaken me and cause me to return to God.

that bothered me for a couple weeks so i asked what did he mean.

he said, if losing the ability to walk, see, talk, having an accident, whatever would be so drastic that it shook me to my very core in order for me to come back to God, that is what he was praying.

i resented my Dad for a long time after that.

then one day, as he laid on his death bed, i promised him i would spend Eternity with him, the family, and especially with God.

few years passed after his death, my own son rebelled against God.

just like water flowing from a fountain, i repeated those same words my own Dad once had warned me with.

i am still awaiting for him to return back to the fold.

Agree, and there is Also Double Lack Of Indemnity (for the wicked saint, AND
the disobedient leadership), as "bad works are LOSS of reward" At Judgment!:

"If any man's [Bad] work shall be burned, he Shall Suffer LOSS:
but he himself Shall Be Saved; yet so as by fire." (1Co 3:15)

The thread hasn't really gone much in this direction, but these are questions I thought might be addressed:

-- If the church had not delivered the man over to Satan for the destruction, is it possible that his spirit might not have been saved?
-----Is the church's discipline an instrument of salvation in this regard?
--What are the implications for soteriology?
----Is an incestuous fornicator, for example, in danger of his spirit not being saved in the day of the Lord Jesus?
----If he is delivered over to Satan and dies in that state, does the church delivering him over enable him to be saved?
--Is the contemporary Evangelical movement's largely ignoring Biblical church discipline dangerous for sinful church-goers and professors of faith?

These are just questions. I'm not stating an opinion on all of these.

We know it is in those awful moments where we cry out to God. Oh Lord.. part of a song comes to mind "

You see the same God that you saying might not even exist
Becomes real to us, but only when were dying in bed
When ya healthy it's like, we don't really care for Him then
Leave me alone God, I'll call you when I need you again
Which is funny, everyone will sleep in the pews
Then blame God for our problems like He sleeping on you
We turn our backs on Him, what do you expect Him to do?
It's hard to answer prayers when nobody's praying to you
I look around at this world we walk on
It's a smack in the face, don't ever tell me there's no God"

Its the becomes real to us but only when were dying in bed. Its in those moments we cry out to God. Not the way He wanted it but.. and I do not believe any regular joe Christian can do this. Its the world that tells us most will be lost. I truly believe easy to be saved hard to be lost. God will take ANYONE that simple calls on Him..they shall be delivered/saved

If the church had not delivered the man over to Satan for the destruction, is it possible that his spirit might not have been saved?
My view -----well that depends on him -----he was certainly going in the wrong direction and was doing things that were an abomination to God ----heading for Apostasy which is renouncing his faith in Christ and rejecting the Holy Spirit and turning back to his worldly stance ---

By the Church getting him out and giving him over to Satan for his destruction of the flesh they actually did him a favour as his Spirit was still Holy and he was still Heaven bound but his time was coming to the point of renouncing ---abandoning ---departing from -and turning away from God and the Holy Spirit ----and once a believer does that they are doomed -----you can't re repent and re crucify Jesus a second time ------as per scripture ----

Greek word for Apostasy

Strong's Concordance
apostasia: defection, revolt

leave, depart," which is derived from 575 /apó, "away from" and 2476 /histémi, "stand") – properly, departure (implying desertion); apostasyliterally, "a leaving, from a previous standing."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Is the church's discipline an instrument of salvation in this regard?
My view ---

Salvation comes only by the way scripture says -----by Faith in Jesus Christ

Romans 10
Verse (Click for Chapter)
New International Version
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved

The Church is to discipline ---judge ---a brother or sister in Christ ---when they see the person going down the wrong path ---this Church allowed this man to keep sinning with no discipline ---so the Church was being judged by Paul for allowing this to keep happening without disciplining the man ----

Paul says in verse 2 -----
And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning

The Church is to nurture and encourage their members in the way of the Spirit ---they failed very badly in doing that with this man ----- they were allowing sin to infiltrate their Godly Space ------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What are the implications for soteriology?
My view ------once your saved -----your a Babe in Christ ---you have to start the process of walking and thinking in God's ways ====building your Faith and relying on the Holy Spirit to direct your path and call upon Grace to help you stay out of sin ------you need to start Maturing in your faith walk with Christ ==you need to be with other true believers so you can be strengthen in your walk by listening to them and seeing them act rightly in their lives and most importantly you need to be always reading and studying the Word with the help of the Holy Spirit -----

When you start Maturing you will find that sin in your life will become less frequent as you do not want to grieve the Holy Spirit and you want to please God and do Hos will ------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

="presidente, post: 4917296, member: 164050"]----Is an incestuous fornicator, for example, in danger of his spirit not being saved in the day of the Lord Jesus?[/QUOTE]

My view ---------If one is saved and doesn't change their sinful ways -----they can fall way in Apostasy and will be lost ----
===============================================================

----If he is delivered over to Satan and dies in that state, does the church delivering him over enable him to be saved?[/QUOTE]

My view ----
The Church handing a believer over to Satan is saying they have forfeited their right to be in that Church and is handed back to the world and Satan who is in charge of this world ------Satan has the power to destroy or to inflict the human but not the soul -----so for the believer their inner soul belongs to Christ and the soul will be saved on the Day of the Lord -----

Job is an example of a believer being handed over to Satan to be afflicted but his soul remained saved =====
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-Is the contemporary Evangelical movement's largely ignoring Biblical church discipline dangerous for sinful church-goers and professors of faith?
My View ---

I personally think it is and 1 Corinthians 5:2 says it is God's will for Church discipline ---Church discipline is gone by the wayside today ------

1 Corinthians 5:2

Amplified Bible

2 And you are proud and arrogant! You should have mourned in shame so that the man who has done this [disgraceful] thing would be removed from your fellowship!

This is another passage that deals with a similar issue in James 5.... probably before it gets to the stage of the congregation getting involved.

19 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;

20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

deliver such an one unto Satan
Well; I have never been, nor ever care to be, on speaking terms with the
spirit world; so if that passage is literal then count me out. As for John Que
and Jane Doe pew warmer, I suggest the following.

If all your good-intentioned nagging has failed to reform someone you know
in church whom you are confident is on a road to ruining their association
with God; then probably the best thing to do is shut up and stop trying to fix
them. Sometimes it's best to allow a self-willed know-it-all's mistakes play
out so they can learn from the school of hard knocks which, although not the
ideal way to get learnin', is better than no learnin' all.

So would you say that Paul and even the Lord Jesus were wrong about church discipline as opposed to just letting it 'play out'?

I would say that debatable topics typically result in food fights and perpetual
bull sessions that never get to the bottom of anything.
