The bass was almost always what people were concerned with. I did most of the service work for an outfit 'Hi-Fi House' out of Pasadena, Ca., for a couple years and they had customers from all over and everyone, almost, that shopped their store wanted to play Pink Floyds' Dark Side of the Moon to get a feel of the bass. Seems the high end was an after thought. I would say the speakers themselves were the important part at that time having only analog. I find that playing MP3 thru certain earbuds gives me a listen that is different than any loudspeaker. All very subjective. Everyone seems to listen for different reasons and listen for certain 'memories' possibly. A big difference in amplifiers too transistors output is less emphasis on 2nd harmonic, I believe, and vacuum tubes are 2nd harmonic emphasized giving 'richer' sound. This subject is long time in my past so I can only say mostly how folks yrs ago were dealing with their sound systems. Plus most of our customers had no qualms about spending. 1976 and a few thousand for sound system was no big deal.Hmmm interesting discussion
A vinyl record or a cassette tape record might have more “bass” or the feeling of a “room”.
But digital might have the feeling of more ”crisp/stereo” sound.

PS The music I was most recently playing was a lot of classical and J. S. Bach on earbuds with CD source was a treat. I want to say the title was "????pieces'. Then about 10 yrs ago while learning guitar and putting music on SD mem the sound just didn't cut it. I was playing country than mostly and preferred getting vinyl. The guy teaching me guitar was pretty good and I stink but a Johnny Cash piece we were using, I said to Dave, he has a cold and made this recording. Dave listened closer and agreed. My ear has always been great but I can not hear myself playing the guitar and very strange took till recently to play and hear properly. Customers used to pay me just to come verify their sound was ok.
So now do you think that your memory is correct? Maybe wishful thinking? Some people like to trash Bose. Maybe Bose was mid-frequency rich. Memories can be skewed in a sense. Seems like I have incorrect memories about taste of certain foods. Some candy I thought sure I liked earlier (Tootsie Roll) and tastes not very good now. Maybe something like that with listening to music.Yes I know what you mean about the ’richer’ sound or having that ‘warm’ feeling.
I also have a guitar as a hobby and I hook it up to an amp but I also have a gadget which I can record it into my computer.
The sounds are obviously very different. When I listen through my amp I get that studio/room sound but on headphones … it’s just different and YES people do play certain songs for ‘memories’. I have many good memories in many songs and while everything is digital via a headphone nowadays, I do miss the ‘rich’ sound of a cassette tape.
Now I dont even have a sound system because everything is headphones . I used to have a Bose surround sound system for music and movies and that was like 7 years ago I think.
I kinda transitioned to headphones/digital/wireless without realizing that I was transitioning.

Some way I think it could also be the 'mood' we are in at the time we are prompted to recall something and our memory may be affected by that 'mood'? I have never given much thought to something like that.
The memories you are thinking back on seem to be relatively recent.
Something else here....You are getting prompted to recall certain memories about sound. I don't recall ever being prompted to recall memories about sound but memories about taste, smell, and sight. 3 of 5 senses. Sight memory when I was 9 or 10 and a cloud in the sky looked like a picture of Jesus with crown of thorns which hung in our house. Don't recall the cloud vividly but where I was and where in the sky relative to where I sat was vivid. Smell and taste memories come on occasion but never anything vivid like exactly when and or where smell or taste was first stored in memory.Hmm yes it’s a possibility.
‘But on some instances the mood is relaxed or the mood is fight or flight but that’s not what makes me remember a memory more than the other I guess.
