Just to add:

I say late 60s early 70s because that message lasted into the early 80s and being a part of the actual Bible Belt of America meant something, and The Holy Spirit was evident in powerful ways.

First of all, I'm not sure that they study Shakespeare in high school any more. Secondly, MOST students will have no clue what MANY of the phrases and terms mean in the KJV, even if they studied Shakespeare. Too many of the phrases and wordings have no meaning to us today. What about people that DON'T get to study Shakespeare in high school? They are simply out of luck when it comes to Bible study?

The devolution of language skills both receptive and expressive is a side issue which may be connected but not really my point.

Comprehension of written text is relative and varies, it is not solely a function of the words in print but also of the reader.

That was one point, the other....

Reading Latin is not Reading English even if the English is archaic.

the language is simply archaic and difficult to understand.
To whom?

That is the point, not sure how often I need to repeat this.

I was never addressing the accuracy directly, but the comprehensibility.
Two different topics.

Many, many ?..... brother, you only listed three that you thought were significant...

I personally disagree that they are significant, but here we are.

I would argue that MOST of the differences you see are of zero consequence in the original meaning and intent of scripture.

And, yes, if there is a slight difference in wording from translation to translation, I absolutely believe the Spirit will guide the reader to the truth, no matter which version has it. (likely BOTH versions have it)
My bible states that David struck down Goliath. The modern versions give credit to Elhanan. Is this a contradiction? Does truth matter?

ESV 2 Samuel 21:19 And there was again war with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, the Bethlehemite, struck down Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

NASB 2 Samuel 21:19 And there was war with the Philistines again at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

Agree and valid response, Latin and English are two different languages.
Soon, someone will come out with an emogi bible, hashtag bible, and internet slang and claim they are the word of God for the modern speaker. We need to update the language from the archaic English we spoke in the 80's before computers and cell phones...:ROFL::ROFL:

Sorry.... I didn't realize you were comparing Latin to KJV english.
Of course Latin would be more difficult, but I imagine to many, many people, some of the phrases and words in KJV sound exactly as understandable as Latin.

Such a good point a lot of truth... I see it everyday.

Total side issue, but I was recently reading Fahrenheit 451 and some of the sentiments expressed on this thread remind of the some of the dialogue in that book.

I did not make the comparison initially someone else on the thread did, I just do not think it is a valid analogy.

The "many, many" is growing exponentially thanks to our education system, so is it the KJV or the illiterate masses?

Get some integrity and answer my question from post #25.

Clarify?

The KJV is written in English and not Latin.

I am not getting your point here?

ESV 2 Samuel 21:19 And there was again war with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, the Bethlehemite, struck down Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

NASB 2 Samuel 21:19 And there was war with the Philistines again at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

This is why I use Bible Hub! Here's some of the translations of that verse 2 Samuel 21:19:

New International Version
In another battle with the Philistines at Gob, Elhanan son of Jair the Bethlehemite killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver’s rod.

New Living Translation
During another battle at Gob, Elhanan son of Jair from Bethlehem killed the brother of Goliath of Gath. The handle of his spear was as thick as a weaver’s beam!

English Standard Version
And there was again war with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, the Bethlehemite, struck down Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

Berean Standard Bible
Once again there was a battle with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan son of Jair the Bethlehemite killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

King James Bible
And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

New King James Version
Again there was war at Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

New American Standard Bible
And there was war with the Philistines again at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

NASB 1995
There was war with the Philistines again at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

NASB 1977
And there was war with the Philistines again at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

Legacy Standard Bible
There was war with the Philistines again at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite struck down Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

Amplified Bible
There was war with the Philistines again at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, a Bethlehemite, killed Goliath the Gittite, whose spear shaft was like a weaver’s beam.

Christian Standard Bible
Once again there was a battle with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath of Gath. The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam.

Holman Christian Standard Bible
Once again there was a battle with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite. The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam.

American Standard Version
And there was again war with the Philistines at Gob; and Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim the Beth-lehemite slew Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

Aramaic Bible in Plain English
And there was again war for Israel with the Philistines, and Elkhanan son of Malaph the Weaver who was from Bayth Lekhem killed Gulyath the Philistine, and the shaft of his spear was thick as the beam of a weaver

Brenton Septuagint Translation
And there was a battle in Rom with the Philistines; and Eleanan son of Ariorgim the Bethleemite slew Goliath the Gittite; and the staff of his spear was as a weaver's beam.

Contemporary English Version
There was still another battle with the Philistines at Gob. A soldier named Elhanan killed Goliath from Gath, whose spear shaft was like a weaver's beam. Elhanan's father was Jari from Bethlehem.

Literal Standard Version
And the battle is again in Gob with the Philistines, and Elhanan son of Jaare-Oregim, the Beth-Lehemite, strikes [a brother of] Goliath the Gittite, and the wood of his spear [is] like a weavers’ beam.

Majority Standard Bible
Once again there was a battle with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan son of Jair the Bethlehemite killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

NET Bible
Yet another battle occurred with the Philistines in Gob. On that occasion Elhanan the son of Jair the Bethlehemite killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

New Heart English Bible
There was again war with the Philistines at Gob; and Elhanan the son of Jair the Bethlehemite killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

Webster's Bible Translation
And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Beth-lehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.

World English Bible
There was again war with the Philistines at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite’s brother, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

Young's Literal Translation
And the battle is again in Gob with the Philistines, and Elhanan son of Jaare-Oregim, the Beth-Lehemite, smiteth a brother of Goliath the Gittite, and the wood of his spear is like a beam of weavers.

This is why I recommend Bible study in parallel with the use of Bible Hub. It's really helpful to see where the differences are. As can be seen in a lot of the translations, Elhanan killed a brother of Goliath, not Goliath himself.

Another downside is that the brother isn't even given a personal identity. He is just the brother of Goliath. We don't even get to know his name! "Oh, I know you! You're Goliath the Gittite's brother! And your name is um.... uh... <snapping fingers>..."

In this case the ESV and NASB are wrong. We know this from 1 Chronicles 20:5 which says in the KJV: "And there was war again with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, whose spear staff was like a weaver's beam." Even the ESV and NASB of 1 Chronicles 20:5 say "brother," so there's no excuse for this bonehead mistake. Still doesn't make the KJV God's infallible word in English.

There IS the Holy Spirit. You're suppose to get counsel from Him on everything. Don't you??? Or do you trust your KJV alone? That's idolatry in that case and KJV isn't always accurate.
