Looking for Jesus

John 8:

- He spoke these words in the treasury as he was teaching in the temple. But no one seized him, for his hour had not yet come. So he said to them again: “I am going away, and you will look for me, and yet you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” The Jews then began to say: “He will not kill himself, will he? Because he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’”

- It is better to work for our own salvation!

- If we count only on men and they lead you to the wrong direction, we must be ready to cry or weep!

- But it will be of no use!

- It is better to do our part and study and share what we learn!

- Once again making mistakes is not a problem if we look for the right way!

- The problem is not doing anything!

- The problem is not looking for!

- Then how do you want God and Jesus to look for us?

- And we must God to help us find the right way!

Looking for Jesus

John 8:

- He tells them that they are from below whereas he is from above!

- They are from this world whereas he is not from this world!

- And he adds that they will die in their sins because they don’t believe he is the one!

- And he speaks about his father who sent him and about the things he told him!

- After his death they will know that he is the one and that he does nothing of his own initiative!

- And he keeps doing what pleases his father!

- When Jesus was on earth, he kept doing what he was supposed to do!

- He told people about his Father’s will!

- He told us what to do if we want to be part of God’s Kingdom!

- He never went on the left or on the right!

- He knew why he was there and he was ready to do his job till his death!

- It was a full time job!

- He was not a tourist visiting the earth!

- We must show the same spirit!

Looking for Jesus

John 8: Jesus speaks about the Father who taught him!

- And he never abandoned him to himself adding because he always does the things pleasing to him!

- Jesus is in union with God and we must participate to this union!

- We must follow Jesus’ example!

- We must do the things pleasing to God but not to us or to men!

- The priority must be given to God!

- Then in time we will receive his priority!

- And he won’t abandon us to ourselves!

- But we need to have something in common!

- We can’t be strangers!

- We must belong to his family!

- We must learn and tell about God’s word!

- Then we will be remembered!

Looking for Jesus

John 8: Jesus told the Jews who had believed him that they would be set free by the truth!

- But they didn’t understand because they were Abraham’s offspring!

- He explained them that the one sinning is a slave of sin!

- He told them that if they were trying to kill him it was because his words didn’t make progress among them!

- Jesus was offering them God’s word opposed to man’s tradition!

- But they were too attached to man’s tradition!

- It was a load preventing them to listen carefully to Jesus!

- When you always take the same way, you don’t even know where you walk!

- You stop seeing and hearing when you usually see and hear on a road if you pay attention to what is around you!

- Modern life has also many obstacles to be able to do it!

- And it is necessary to open again our eyes and ears!

- But do we really want it?

Looking for Jesus

John 8: Jesus speaks about the things he has seen while with his Father!

- Think about the strong relationship between a father and his son!

- Think about the quality of the discussion they have when they have a strong relationship!

- Think how it is difficult to have such a quality of discussion between a father and his son!

- Especially in today’s society!

- When parents find so difficult to speak with their children!

- It is something we should be positively jealous of!

- Think again about Jesus when he was 12 and he wanted to be in the house of his Father!

- It is explosive!

- Unimaginable!

- But such an incredible example and in many areas of life!

Looking for Jesus

John 8: Jesus says that the Pharisees do the things they have heard from their father!

- And it is completely different from what Jesus says!

- They say they are Abraham’s children but they don’t do his works!

- And they are trying to kill Jesus which tells a lot about their father!

- Thus God is not their Father!

- But the devil is!

- And they wish the desires of their father!

- The devil began as a murderer and a liar and he is the father of the liar!

- So they act like him!

- Thus by our actions and sayings we show where we are from and who is our father!

- So we should be careful when we speak about God!

- Because the way we speak make clear where we are from!

Looking for Jesus

John 8: Jesus tells the Pharisees they are not listening to him because they are not from God because what he says comes from God!

- But they say he is a Samaritan and has a demon!

- They defend their own interests because Jesus speaks about their real nature!

- And of course they can’t accept it because he exposes them!

- And the truth is only good to hear when you behave correctly!

- The best example is when Jesus cures someone in front of them and the only thing they can do is accusing him of not respecting the Sabbath!

- It is such an evidence of their real nature and the fact that they belong to the devil!

- But they just play a game!

- But it is easy to see it with a bit of good judgment!

- Or it should be easy!

- May I ask a question to everybody ?

- I will let people time!

- Then I will answer too!

- There is no trap!

- WHAT IS ALL THE BIBLE ABOUT EXCEPT THE FACT THAT IT IS GOD’S WORD ?

- There may be different answers depending on the elements we have!

  1. About John 1:1

  • As I always hear the same song about John 1:1 and I am tired of hearing it again and again, I am going to have a look at the use of the definite article or not in the book of John!
  • When I look at the translations of John 1:1 in Biblehub, they all say and the Word was God!
  • Now before starting, I am going to repeat that in Ancient Greek, you only get the definite article!
  • When there is no definite article, it corresponds to the indefinite article!
  • So let’s start with John 1:1 I am going to put into pieces!

  • In
Ἐν (En)

Preposition

Strong's 1722: In, on, among. A primary preposition denoting position, and instrumentality, i.e. A relation of rest; 'in, ' at, on, by, etc.

  • [the] beginning
ἀρχῇ (archē)

Noun - Dative Feminine Singular

Strong's 746: From archomai; a commencement, or chief.

  • So here in Greek we don’t have the definite article but we have a preposition followed by a noun (in (the) beginning)

  • was
ἦν (ēn)

Verb - Imperfect Indicative Active - 3rd Person Singular

Strong's 1510: I am, exist. The first person singular present indicative; a prolonged form of a primary and defective verb; I exist.

  • the
ὁ (ho)

Article - Nominative Masculine Singular

Strong's 3588: The, the definite article. Including the feminine he, and the neuter to in all their inflections; the definite article; the.

  • Word,
Λόγος (Logos)

Noun - Nominative Masculine Singular

Strong's 3056: From lego; something said; by implication, a topic, also reasoning or

motive; by extension, a computation; specially, the Divine Expression.

  • Here we get the Word (o Logos) that is definite article and noun!

  • and
καὶ (kai)

Conjunction

Strong's 2532: And, even, also, namely.

  • the
ὁ (ho)

Article - Nominative Masculine Singular

Strong's 3588: The, the definite article. Including the feminine he, and the neuter to in all their inflections; the definite article; the.

  • Word
Λόγος (Logos)

Noun - Nominative Masculine Singular

Strong's 3056: From lego; something said; by implication, a topic, also reasoning or motive; by extension, a computation; specially, the Divine Expression.

  • was
ἦν (ēn)

Verb - Imperfect Indicative Active - 3rd Person Singular

Strong's 1510: I am, exist. The first person singular present indicative; a prolonged form of a primary and defective verb; I exist.

  • with
πρὸς (pros)

Preposition

Strong's 4314: To, towards, with. A strengthened form of pro; a preposition of direction; forward to, i.e. Toward.

  • God,
Θεόν (Theon)

Noun - Accusative Masculine Singular

Strong's 2316: A deity, especially the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very.

  • Once again we get the Word (o Logos) that is definite article and noun!
  • Then we get with God, that is we don’t have the definite article but we have a preposition followed by a noun (with God)!

  • and
  • καὶ (kai)
  • Conjunction
  • Strong's 2532: And, even, also, namely.

  • the
  • ὁ (ho)
  • Article - Nominative Masculine Singular
  • Strong's 3588: The, the definite article. Including the feminine he, and the neuter to in all their inflections; the definite article; the.

  • Word
  • Λόγος (Logos)
  • Noun - Nominative Masculine Singular
  • Strong's 3056: From lego; something said; by implication, a topic, also reasoning or motive; by extension, a computation; specially, the Divine Expression.

  • Again we get the Word that is definite article and noun!

  • was
ἦν (ēn)

Verb - Imperfect Indicative Active - 3rd Person Singular

Strong's 1510: I am, exist. The first person singular present indicative; a prolonged form of a primary and defective verb; I exist.

  • God.
Θεὸς (Theos)

Noun - Nominative Masculine Singular

Strong's 2316: A deity, especially the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very.

  • Here we get a different case that is the noun God (Theos) is alone!
  • There is no definite article and no preposition!
  • So it corresponds to the indefinite article that is a god or having divine origins!
  • To check how John writes, we are going to look at the whole book!

  • God
Θεόν (Theon)

Noun - Accusative Masculine Singular

Strong's 2316: A deity, especially the supreme Divinity; figuratively, a magistrate; by Hebraism, very.

  • Here we get with God that is a preposition and noun as usual!

  • in

John is sent as a man of God announcing the coming of Jesus who is going to be rejected by the Jews but he is going to be accepted by many people. Priests were sent to John to ask him if he was the Christ but he clearly tells them he is not but he is preparing the way for him. The next day Jesus comes to him and john speaks about the spirit above Jesus like a dove and he gives witness that Jesus is the Lamb of God. Then Two disciples of John start to follow Jesus (Andrew and Simon or Peter). New disciples are joining Jesus: Philip, Nathanael.
Can I ask your detailed take on John 1:19-27 - who is 'the prophet'

19 Now this was John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20 He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.” ( Jesus) 21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” (so who is this prophet)
