Often in the gospel you find the known sinners flocking to Jesus and the ultra religious and self righteous criticizing and judging Jesus based on the fact that he didn’t reject the sinners of thier society but instead Jesus associated with them ate and talked with them loved them and it just really bothered the self righteous religious folks that Jesus message was not what they had always thought
“And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.
And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?
But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice:
for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
Matthew 9:10-13
“Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him.
And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receiveth sinners, and eateth with them.”
Luke 15:1-2 KJV
So what kinds of things did Jesus tell these sinners to call them to repentance ? He told then the hard truth
“I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”
Luke 13:5
a he showed them a heavenly perspective of repentance
“Likewwise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.”
Luke 15:10 KJV
He assured them that if they believed in him truly and heard the gospel they would be saved from condemnation and death
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”
John 5:24 KJV
jesus truly was speaking to sinners that needed to hear the truth that sets free and the apostles were spreading the truth that sets free
“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
John 8:31-32 KJV
