Proverbs 20

1 Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.
2 A king’s wrath strikes terror like the roar of a lion; those who anger him forfeit their lives.
3 It is to one’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel.
4 Sluggards do not plow in season; so at harvest time they look but find nothing.

5 The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.
6 Many claim to have unfailing love, but a faithful person who can find?
7 The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them.
8 When a king sits on his throne to judge, he winnows out all evil with his eyes.
9 Who can say, “I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin”?

10 Differing weights and differing measures—the Lord detests them both.
11 Even small children are known by their actions, so is their conduct really pure and upright?
12 Ears that hear and eyes that see—the Lord has made them both.
13 Do not love sleep or you will grow poor; stay awake and you will have food to spare.
14 “It’s no good, it’s no good!” says the buyer—then goes off and boasts about the purchase.

15 Gold there is, and rubies in abundance, but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel.
16 Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger; hold it in pledge if it is done for an outsider.
17 Food gained by fraud tastes sweet, ut one ends up with a mouth full of gravel.
18 Plans are established by seeking advice;
so if you wage war, obtain guidance.

19 A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid anyone who talks too much.
20 If someone curses their father or mother, their lamp will be snuffed out in pitch darkness.
21 An inheritance claimed too soon will not be blessed at the end.
22 Do not say, “I’ll pay you back for this wrong!” Wait for the Lord, and he will avenge you.
23 The Lord detests differing weights, and dishonest scales do not please him.

24 A person’s steps are directed by the Lord. How then can anyone understand their own way?
25 It is a trap to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider one’s vows.
26 A wise king winnows out the wicked; he drives the threshing wheel over them.

27 The human spirit is[a] the lamp of the Lord that sheds light on one’s inmost being.
28 Love and faithfulness keep a king safe; through love his throne is made secure.
29 The glory of young men is their strength, gray hair the splendor of the old.
30 Blows and wounds scrub away evil, and beatings purge the inmost being.

I heard this scripture quoted not long after reading your post.

“For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:20).

Thank you for emphasizing the importance of righteousness.

I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭5:32‬ ‭

thank goodness for repentance and remission of sins when we have failed and we realize it

Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity,

And in whose spirit there is no guile.

When I kept silence, my bones waxed old Through my roaring all the day long. For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: ( when a believer tries to hide sin and ignore it )

Selah. I acknowledged my sin unto thee, And mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; And thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. ( when the believer acknowledged thier sins before God in repentance ) Selah.

For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: Surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭32:1-6‬ ‭KJV‬‬

because of this

God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God. Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; There is none that doeth good, no, not one.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭53:2-3‬ ‭KJV‬‬

We who have all sinned have this for remission of sins and righteousness

“and said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭24:46-48‬ ‭KJV‬‬

in the gospel we find the righteousness of Christ

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭1:16-17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

To be “right with God” a person has to repent and believe in Jesus and hear and accept the gospel because no one among us is righteous , we need to allow this to happen by hearing and believing Jesus

“if so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: that ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; ( can’t ever be righteous)

and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; ( what hearing and believing the gospel does to someone’s mind )

and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:21-24‬ ‭KJV‬‬

we’re being changed at our core because all are sinners , the gospel is calling those sinners to repentance and righteousness were being changed to righteous people rather than sinners trying to act right

We only have righteousness through our Lord Jesus Christ. Actually we have not ever been righteous and cannot declare our own righteousness. Jesus is our righteousness.

But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption
1 Corinthians 1:30

We have this righteousness through our faith in the Son of God:
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.” Romans 1:17

No matter how much we may try or think we have obeyed, we will always fall short and that is why God provided His own way for us to be accepted by Him
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
2 Corinthians 5:21

When we seek God and believe that He has proved all we need through His Son, then and only then, will be accounted righteous in His sight
But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Matthew 6:33

Yes. Jesus is our righteousness, since His righteousness is IMPUTED to every believer by the grace of God. At the same time Christians are commanded to be righteous in their daily walk. For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world (Tit 2:11,12) We do not "declare" our righteousness but we "work out" our righteousness, which comes from the indwelling Holy Spirit. So to say "we have not ever been righteous" is false.

And once sinners come to repentance, God Himself DECLARES them to be righteous with the righteousness of Christ. So God starts with the fact that "there is none righteous, no not one" (outside of Christ) and then moves on to the fact that all who obey the Gospel (and are in Christ) are righteous in His eyes.

This is based upon the principle of justification by grace through faith. "Abraham believed God and IT WAS IMPUTED TO HIM for righteousness". And in like manner God imputes righteousness to all who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation. Without this "robe of righteousness", no one could enter Heaven.

Many Christians have a problem believing this and wonder how God could declare a vile sinner to be righteous. But God sees the believer in Christ, and because of that the believer is deemed to be righteous. However, this is not a license to sin, but an incentive to be righteous in practice.

Great point. Thanks to Jesus, we are viewed as children who have been saved by grace through faith in our Lord and Savior. Our "righteousness" is "filthy rags" (Isa. 64:6). The righteousness we need to strive towards is surrendering ourselves to God and allowing him to reengineer our hearts and minds to bear the fruits of His spirit (Gal 5: 22-23).

So boring already

as it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, There is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; There is none that doeth good, no, not one. Romans 3:10-12

You don't have that in your KJ? Huh. I have it in my KJ.

Yes, we are to live righteously, but that verse is for instruction AFTER we have accepted Christ so obviously saying that no one is righteous is the truth.

Positionally in Christ, God does see us as righteous. We do not have our own righteousness which is what I said.

So tiresome. Why do you even keep trying?

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:21-24‬ ‭

We couldn’t before but that’s why we died and rose to end that situation where we can’t and to become those who can there’s a change when we allow the gospel of the kingdom into our belief

Paul is teaching that change in doctrine like this notice how the reader is being called to action

“Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭5:1-8, 10-11, 14-17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

We can’t because we’re just poor sinners is what was before

we can because Gods spirit is with us is now we’ve actually lost the excuse of not having the ability to do what’s right when we receive the Holy Ghost we now are equipped to begin changing over and being set free

“grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, according as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him ( the gospel ) that hath called us to glory and virtue:

whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭1:2-8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Faith leads to actions and makes the believer able to do what they are called to do

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

We used to not be able now we are we just don’t realize it yet

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭6:19-20‬ ‭KJV‬‬

when we really accept that that’s true , there’s power in it to overcome the old sinful mind and heart that held us captive

Listen, if anyone thinks they have become righteous because of their deeds, God will set you straight when you present those deeds as proof of your righteousness.

It's in the Bible. This stubborn attitude that people who have been Christians for years sometimes seem to sprout, is indicative of people who need their spirits stirred once again. Sadly, it also seems often that people who do not believe in the gifts of the Holy Spirit develop an attitude of superiority in their belief that they have superior Bible knowledge.

It's really your choice but you are still entirely at the mercies of God and only through His grace are you saved and only through His Son are you made righteousness. That is really not a hard concept to grasp unless you reject the teaching of the Holy Spirit who makes the truths revealed in scripture come alive and enables us to live by them.

There is power in the sinless blood of Christ to overcome. You can find that in the book of Revelation.

11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
Revelation 12:11

All glory to God and to the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

“There is power in the sinless blood of Christ to overcome. You can find that in the book of Revelation.”

of course there power in Christs blood for remission of sins and you can find it throughout the new testement and if you look carefully in the Old Testament it’s a consistent theme in the Bible that remission comes through his blood

So no argument there but can I ask you a question ?

Does this mean we reject and deny what Jesus the lord and savior said would save us because he shed his blood afterwards ? In other words is the blood the reason we reject what God said ? Or are we supposed to hear what Hod said in the gospel , and believe and also believe he shed his blood for remission of our sins like he said ?

“for this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭26:28‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Because that’s true does it mean this is not true ?

“I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭13:3‬ ‭KJV‬‬

and if that’s true does it mean this isn’t ?

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
‭‭John‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭KJV‬‬

of course each verse doesn’t disqualify the next it’s all true and all relevant repentance is t something that now doesn’t matter it’s something he’s calling us to

Jesus shedding his blood doesn’t change this it verifies it as truth

“Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? ( he’s leading us to repentance because of this )

But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; (we’re causing it ourselves because we refuse to repent and obey we’re impenitent )

Who will render to every man according to his deeds: to them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

( he wants us on that group )?

but unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; ( he doesn’t want us in that group )

but glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, ( he’s trying to teach us to repent and live right to avoid this group ) to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭2:4-10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

but often we just refuse to hear it even though God has always called man to stop sinning and do good and live

chrirts death isn t what made God say “never mind forget about your sin and whether you do good or evil your saved now “

it is a warning and a promise that we have to hear and believe to receive this his boy possibke because Jesus first preached salvstion nd then invited all creatires to believe him and then free he shed his blood to remit our sins under the old law of man so we could have a new covenant word that promises life like this

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”
‭‭John‬ ‭5:24‬ ‭KJV‬‬

that’s true just like Jesus blood was shed without hearing and believing the promises Jesus spoke in his word we don’t have anything he promised in his word

jesus died for sin either way whether we will repent and believe and hear the lords word is another matter of we believe in him we’re not going to avoid and erase his words

In our own flesh and by our own efforts no one has ever done any good or become righteous. But when Jesus Christ dwells in the believer through the power of the Holy Spirit it is possible and it is commendable to live above sin and above the power and control of sin.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit.
Romans 8:1

Amen. God has provided all the tools and weapons we need to overcome Satan, this fallen world, and most importantly our sinful nature (the old man):

Ephesians 6:10-18

New International Version

The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

We just need to do our part and put on the armor. God will fight the battles for us over those forces we cannot conquer by our own strength!

amen to all you said and we have grace that allows us time to change and grow that’s the difference

No grace

“Thou shalt not commit adultery.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭20:14‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.”
‭‭Leviticus‬ ‭20:10‬ ‭

grace and truth

“For the law was given by Moses,

but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”
‭‭John‬ ‭1:17‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, they say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?

So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman ( he drove her accusers away until it’s just her and him ) standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.”
‭‭John‬ ‭8:3-5, 7-11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

He gave this condemned to death sinner grace and forebearance and then told he like always “ stop sinning “

the gospel doesn’t declare “ now it’s okay to commit adultery and sin your saved already “

at he gospel shines a light on our sin that has condemned us , takes away our condemnation by the law , and then instructs us to repent of our sins and instructs us in the right things to do the things that please God

grace has been distorted into a liscense to freely sin and claim “the blood “ grace is actually what saves us from the condemnation of death wrotten in the law and then teaches us how to come to life in righteousness so we don’t perish with the world

Grace does this

“For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;”
‭‭Titus‬ ‭2:11-12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

But Gods grace doesn’t do this

“For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.”
‭‭Jude‬ ‭1:4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Lasciviousness means people create an excuse to keep sinning a cover for them to continue enjoying the corrupt fruits but Gods grace is about teaching sinners to repent of thier sins and live upright lives so this will of God can happen for them

“The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:9‬ ‭KJV‬‬

he’s giving us time to come around and repent through faith in Christ and his word . He wants all of us tomlewrn that to keep sinning is death for sure but to repent and believe is salvstion from that end of all thier sins

Great quote from the book of Jude. I love how you point out that under the New Covenant, we are living under grace, the law of Christ, and the truth. Grace does not give us a license to do as we please and continue sinning. By the power of God's Spirit and grace, we are transformed into a new creation where the sinful life becomes repulsive and undesirable.

Those who think grace allows us to do whatever we want are missing the point. The Sermon on the Mount brings expectations to a whole new level, one we can't achieve without Jesus' help.
