Hello everyone. Wishing you all a happy New Year 2024. I am a senior person 61 years old and am not an expert at some of the latest website technologies. I was looking at my profile today and saw that there were about 180 likes linked to my name on posts that I had not viewed. That was an error in the system. So I am now going through the posts and trying to correct anything that is linked to my name that I do not agree with. This will take some time. One error I will clarify right now regards a post in June 2023. The system had mentioned that I liked some of the comments. However I saw a comment that the system had said I liked but in fact I do not agree with the comment. I have removed what the system entered that was an error. So I am now saying my opinion. I do believe in speaking in tongues according to what has been mentioned in the book of Acts in the Bible. I do not think that speaking in tongues is relevant only to the Bible days. I have experienced speaking in tongues and know other christians who speak in tongues through the power of the Holy Spirit. I believe God does the supernatural to help to draw us closer to Him and help us to have stronger faith in His power.

Happy New Year to you also. I am guessing the topic of the likes was on on the topic of speaking in tongues. Do you see speaking in tongues as known earthy languages the speaker has not learned, or unintelligible utterances that God translates to the listeners ear, in their language?

Thanks for the new year wishes.
It will take me at least a week to give a good reply to your question. I am going to review some of the things that have already been mentioned on christian chat posts regarding speaking in tongues and the Holy Spirit. I will also look on the internet. In the meantime I will pray that God will lead you to someone else more skilled in Bible Scriptures and anointed in teaching about those matters. Also as you pray directly to God for those answers He can give you His truth.

Okay, thanks for the reply. I'm some one that sees the gift of tongues as having fulfilled its purpose, with it being a known earthly language, not known by the speaker, that God gave some believers to communicate His gospel of reconciliation to people who spoke different language to the speaker. It was as a sign to the Jews and later to others.

The 'tongues of angels' spoken about by Paul..being exaggeration as a 'even if he could' ..it would be nothing compared to the gift of love.

The cause of the fulfillment of the tongues being the completed Canon, death of the apostles and destruction of the Jewish temple

I think it depends on the different connections between God and folks. God plans different things according to different folks. Some people don't want to speak in tongues, so God can't lead them to speak in tongues.God will lead everyone in the right way.

There is nothing to make a fuss about.

What tongue (language) did you speak in? How did you come to a physical/spiritual state to begin speaking in tongues?

It is significant that the only epistle that addresses tongues in 1 Corinthians, in which Paul was actually correcting the Corinthians for the abuse of tongues. But in Acts 2 we see at least 15 human languages being spoken supernaturally. Today missionaries traveling to foreign lands must learn the languages, since none of them has claimed that they could speak a foreign language supernaturally.

Something to note is this comment: "From about 1909, tongues were redefined as a ‘heavenly language’ (now understood as glossolalia), although God, exceptionally, might give somebody a human language they had never learned naturally (xenolalia), as was the case with the 120 believers on the Day of Pentecost. This redefinition of the purpose of tongues speech was not published from the rooftops, though, and gradually people seemed to forget that the concept of missionary tongues was not “an aberration entertained only by a few extremists”, but “rather, a fundamental and nearly universal notion during the first few years of the [Pentecostal] movement. http://www.pctii.org/cyberj/cyberj26/lie1.html

Amen He never changes. We keep looking at this as if its time based. There is no time where He is. His words are not based in time. So we know when Christ rose it was what almost 3 days ago and some are like "well that was yesterday not today" I mean yesterday not 2000 years ago. Like a person saying "a Joy was filled with the spirit yesterday and spoke in tongues" ( haha oh what are the odds. I had to stop because guess what the song is? The same God, no you will never change.) No it was not playing when I started this only at "A Joy was filled".

Amen He never changes.
Of course God never changes. That does not mean that God never changes the way He deals with mankind. All you have to do is compare the Old Covenant and the New Covenant. Was there a HUGE change? Of course there was. Was it the same God? Of course He was. The sacrifices of countless clean animals was replaced by the ONE GREAT SACRIFICE FOR SINS. Read the epistle to the Hebrews.

That was the case in Acts. HOWEVER - there is a "minority theology" that teaches that Acts 2 was a "miracle of hearing".

In the present, there are recorded cases of people speaking known human languages that they haven't learned.

In 1 Cor 14, however, records that in their meetings, "Nobody understands" unless there's an Interpreter", and people shouldn't Blather in Tongues (their prayer languages) unless they're interpreted. The Corinthian Church was a rather "Flesh driven" bunch that liked to "Show off".

God isn't a "one trick pony", so "tongues don't ALWAYS have to be one thing or another.

Over the last 60 years or so, I heard of or witnessed:

Tongues understood by nobody, and interpreted by another, (sometimes me) or by the tongues speaker themselves (common).

Tongues with are understood by one or many people present in their own language (Often with the proper regional accent).

Prophetic utterance in the common tongue which is HEARD in one or more different languages by those present.

Spoken human Languages local to people that you don't understand, BUT are revealed by the gift of "Interpretation".

Tongues which are understood by one or more people present, AND Interpreted by another who doesn't understand them, and the interpretation matches the understood language,

Tongues which are a "prayer language" spoken in private, or during corporate worship, and not understood, or interpreted by anybody (most common).

"Tongues", "Word of Wisdom", "Word of Knowledge", "Interpretation of Tongues", and "Prophetic utterance" are all essentially the SAME GIFT functionally - i.e. God, by the Holy Spirit, gives you the words (tongues or otherwise Mat 10:19) to speak directly to your mind, and you just SPEAK what you're given.

Simple as that.

If there was indeed a miracle of hearing, then the apostles and disciples did not need to speak foreign languages supernaturally. Their Aramaic would have been supernaturally translated into the language of each hearer. So, no, there was no "miracle of hearing". The miracle was in the speaking.

However, instances of "Miracles of hearing" do happen. I said it was a "Minority Theology".
