"You search the scripture because you think that in them you possess eternal life; These (the scripture) are they that testify about Me..."
You can know scripture, like these pharisees, and still not know Him, "...yet, you refuse to come to Me to have life."
We should search the scripture because it is God's love letter to us and it is to be the light to our path Psa 119:105 outside of it is danger Isa 8:20

The Pharisees didn't know Jesus because they were depending on their own rules and righteousness instead of submitting to Christ and His of righteousness Psa 119:172 ,Mat 15:3-14 Mark 7:7-13

We should all seek a personal relationship with Jesus through prayer, His Word, and fellowship.

The Scripture teach our need for Jesus' goodness, God's goodness, to live. No amount of trying can make us good, because we are NOT, nor can ever BE, God.

Right, Good Like GOD? no, but part of his family yes, we are made in his Image. Look into John 17, quite extraordinary and revealing of the blessings our heavenly father bestows on those who love him and do his will;

Jhn 17:1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
Jhn 17:2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
Jhn 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
Jhn 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
Jhn 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
Jhn 17:6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
Jhn 17:7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.
Jhn 17:8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
Jhn 17:9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
Jhn 17:10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
Jhn 17:11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
Jhn 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
Jhn 17:13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
Jhn 17:14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Jhn 17:15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
Jhn 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Jhn 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
Jhn 17:18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
Jhn 17:19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
Jhn 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
Jhn 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
Jhn 17:22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
Jhn 17:23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
Jhn 17:24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
Jhn 17:25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
Jhn 17:26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

Yes, "kept through love," that is, up to a point but then hates and dumps us if we what? You cannot diminish the measure of His love.

His will is that we should believe in His Son.

yes,
Luk 9:34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
Luk 9:35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.

Mat 5:48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. Jesus in us makes us perfect as He gives us His righteousness Psa 119:172 and He is perfect, just like His law Psa 19:7

Matthew 5:20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

So what Jesus condemned of the Pharisees and Scribes like keeping their rules over the commandments of God which He said their heart is far them, I would not want to take the same path of the Pharisees and ignore this important teaching spoken by Jesus we are to live by Mat 4:4 .
Jesus made a point there

You want to get to me by yourself. You shall be perfect. Your righteousness must exceed the law keepers..

Moses said perfection was required. Thats Gods standard.

If you want to get to him by obedience, that is the mark you must hit

I hope you have never sinned, for you would already be disqualified

Grace simply isn't enough for some.
Here's something else I've been considering lately. God has told us He will never leave us or forsake us. These words are of course are meant to encourage us through difficult times. But they also negate any possibility that we will ever be separated from God. There are those who teach that while God cannot separate Himself from us, we can separate from Him. How is that possible if He won't go away? Don't know why but I've been particularly blessed considering this verse recently.
BTW...how is retirement going? Has it started?
I mentioned that, we can return to the mire.

I agree we can. And sometimes egregiously. But we cannot escape God. Once we are in Christ, there is no mechanism in the new covenant to get rid of us.
The old covenant had stipulations for the children of Israel and consequences for those who did not obey. The only provision for wayward believers in Christ is chastening.

I will ask you to study the differences in the new and old covenants they are the same one people break all the time, the next written in your heart and mind forever, do look for yourself in the scripture use the search feature for words like COVENANT or NEW COVENANT and see.

Peace.
Incorrect vassal. The old covenant was not made with all the nations of the world.

The old covenant was specifically made with the Jews at Mt Sinai.

Gentiles sojourning (living) in Israel who wished to celebrate the Passover, could be circumcised.

Jesus was sent to the Jews only, Jesus was not sent to the Gentiles.

The Gentiles were grafted in much later.

Hope your correct.

The Lord will never let go of those who call upon Him.

Yet, the Lord is kind and gracious, if you want out you are allowed to depart.

Incorrect, I will judge the nations.
(y)

"Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters? 3Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life?"

I appreciate your perspective. But until someone shows the provision in the new covenant that shows it is possible, I'm loathe to believe it.

So what if they departed from God. He will always bring repentance because He will never leave them. What God has joined, man cannot separate. Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus the Lord.
Please explain.

Hebrews 10:29
How much more severe punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?

I'll have to get back to you. There are some interesting phrases there...trampled underfoot the Son of God...regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant...insulted the Spirit of grace. Offhand I could only address them superficially.
But the audience of Hebrews is those considering giving up the faith. And Paul is warning them of the futility of returning to a failed covenant and the superiority of the new covenant.
Peter, in my opinion, wasn't leaving the faith. He was the one who answered...to whom will we go? Thou hast the words of life...my paraphrase.

There is more than 1 test of faith. Keeping the commandments is only 1. In 1 John there are 5 tests given. Why do you never mention them. It is important to give the full council of God.
And the problem with poor eschatology is that it affects other doctrines. The new heavens and earth have come. Jesus is the new creation. He is the firstborn. Through Him comes a new humanity. One that makes the redeemed partakers of the divine nature. He holds the keys of death and hell. Hell is being plundered like never before. Even closing their gates, He is plucking brands from the fire. God has given Him a place of honor and a name above all others. And is placing even today all things under His feat. You have no idea what happened at the cross. Your striving should have ceased if you had found rest in Him. But you have not. And you would burden everyone else the same way.
Cease from such things and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and your burden will fall on Him. His burden is light.
Well that is the truth. Well done.

Paul emphasized that very point that we are a new creation in Christ.

The old has passed well and truly.

2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

We are fully reconciled in Jesus Christ.

We are fully justified and sanctified in Jesus Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:18-19
Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their wrongdoings against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

The law of sin and death is no longer in force for Christians.

Romans 8:2
For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

If I sin I cannot die in Jesus Christ.

has set you free from the law of sin and of death

Now that is a perfect liberation, absolute freedom.

I noticed your attempting to split hairs now.

Both Peter and the Hebrews were guilty of the same crime. Both were returning to the law.

Yes he was. And God sent a messenger to correct him. And he received the rebuke and was exercised by it. He didn't fall away. And that's the point I'm making. The difference between those in Christ and those who aren't is in the results.
