IMO, the difference between the old and the new is that the old made the people fearful, the shrank back and had Moses approach Him. But with the new covenant, God gives us the guts to know Him (paraphrasing Jeremiah 24:7, " And I will give them a heart to know Me...).

well, since you insist on Scripture:

Hebrews, Chapter 8
(read with understanding)

1Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;

2A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

3For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.

4For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:

5Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

6But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

7For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

8For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

9Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

10For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

11And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

12For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

13In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.

both are about keeping the law?
Not at all. The old covenant, the law, brought the knowledge of sin; the new covenant brings us to repentance and faith in Christ.

"19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. 29 Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, 30 since there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law."—Romans 3:19-26
The Lord didn't come to destroy the law but to fulfill. Therefore, the law hasn't been voided, but fulfilled in Christ.

"23 But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. 24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor."—Galatians 3:23-25

Thank goodness we are no longer under the law!

The old covenant is a pattern shown to Moses on the mount . the new covenant is the reality

“Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.”

there are two seperate covenants the whole idea comes from what God said he would do in the future , in the Old Testament scriptures

“Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭31:31-32‬ ‭KJV‬‬

you see already how clear it is that there are two covenants the new isnt according to the words of the old it’s a new covenant. You see above brother quotes this same thing from Hebrews because Hebrews is mostly about revealing the differences in tbe teo covenants

“But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. ( not the same promises but better ones a better word )

For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, When I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers In the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; Because they continued not in my covenant, And I regarded them not, saith the Lord.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭8:6-9‬ ‭KJV‬‬

throughout the New Testament you’ll find the writers making clear distinctions between the old covenant ( the law made with israel ) and new covenant (the gospel made with all creation )

even the very purpose of each is contrary

The old testement that imputes every sin and condemns every sinner casts them out and brings them to death

the new comes to the sinners already condemned calling then to repentance and offering remission of thier sins under the first covenant law

So you have Jesus mediating a new and better covenant after remitting the sins of the first

“And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament,

that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament,

they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭9:15‬ ‭

the two testaments are two be is like a shadow of the real one foreshadow a pre requisite event one needed to occur before the other could come forth

Both are part of Gods plan for ma kinds redemption the new has come now

The old covenant is entirely based on obedience, while the new is based on faith.

Galatians 3:10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”

Hebrews 10: 1 The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. 2 Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. 3 But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins. 4 It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:

“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but a body you prepared for me;
6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings
you were not pleased.
7 Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—
I have come to do your will, my God.’”

Obviously, there is far more to it.

The Mosaic Covenant is eternal (Exodus 31:14-17, Leviticus 24:8), so the only way that it can be replaced by the New Covenant is if the New Covenant does everything that it does plus more, which is what it means to make something obsolete (Hebrews 8:13). So the New Covenant still is made with the same eternal God with the same eternal character traits and therefore involves following the same eternal law for how to testify about His character traits (Hebrews 8:10), plus it is based on better promises and has a superior mediator (Hebrews 8:6).

In Deuteronomy 30, it prophesies about a time when the Israelites would return from exile, God would circumcise their hearts, and they would return to obedience to the Mosaic Law. In Ezekiel 36:26-27 and Jeremiah 31:33, the context is in regard to the New Covenant, the Israelites returning from exile, and they describe God circumcising our hearts by means of the Spirit and returning to obedience to the Mosaic Law. In Romans 2:25-29, the way to recognize that a Gentile has a circumcised heart is by observing their obedience to the Mosaic Law and circumcision of the heart is a matter of the Spirit, which is in contrast with Acts 7:51-53, where those who have uncircumcised hearts resist the Spirit and do not obey the Mosaic Law. So the New Covenant is all about the Israelites returning to obedience to the Mosaic Law.

I believe (Moses) was to be placed after "old".

There is a HUGE difference between the two covenants, and the difference is based upon the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ and the subsequent gift of the Holy Spirit (and the free gift of eternal life).

The apostle Paul CONTRASTS the two covenants (testaments) in 2 Corinthians 3:1-18 (entire chapter). But Paul's epistle to the Hebrews gives you an IN DEPTH contrast, and goes into a lot of detail (and you owe it to yourself to carefully study this epistle). At the same time there are a few verses which sum up the difference.

For the Law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God. (Heb7:19)

For the Law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore. (Heb 7:28)

But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the Mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.

For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away. (Heb 8:6-13)

"Ready to vanish away" in the context of Paul writing this epistle about 63-64 AD, and the destruction of the temple in 70 AD. And sins could be "remembered no more" only because Christ is the Lamb of God who "took away" the sin of the world.

Yes, there are differences but not as many as most think.

The New Covenant is based on better promises Heb 8:6.

The Old Covenant had the people doing

Exodus 19:5 Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine
Exodus 19: 8 The people all responded together, “We will do everything the Lord has said.” So Moses brought their answer back to the Lord.

So the old covenant was the strength of the individual

The better promise of the New Covenant has God doing- we just need to cooperate with Him

Hebrews 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people

The New Covenant has Jesus now as our High Priest Heb 4:14 and Mediator Heb 9:15 so instead of bringing an animal sacrifice for our sins, Jesus took that penalty at the Cross so when we sin we can directly to Him

It is still a sin to break any of the Ten Commandments 1 John 3:4 Romans 7:7 James 2:10-12 Mat 5:19-30 what did end was the old sanctuary system - annual feast days- some called sabbath(s) animal sacrifices, and the old sanctuary rituals as they all pointed forward to Christ who came our Passover Lamb 1 Cor 5:7 who can take the sins of the world. Through Jesus we can receive His righteousness and live just how He lived as our example to follow 1 John 2:6 God’s Ten Commandments just shows us our sin Rom 3:20 1 James 1:22-25 and so we are not depending on our righteousness, but God’s Psa119:172 which is everlasting Psa 119:142

This is the old covenant

“And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient. And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭24:7-8‬ ‭KJV‬‬

everything God told Moses and Moses told the people is the old covenant.

The new covenant is everything Jesus preached to his disciples in the gospel and then shed his blood according to his words like Moses shed the animal blood according to his words which was the covenant they agreed to

each covenant has a mediator the mediators words are the covenant and then the mediator sheds the blood of the covenant word they have given

a just like Moses read his book in front of all the people then shed the animal blood according to his words

. Jesus preached the gospel then sent it out to all the people and shed his blood of atonement according to his everlasting words being spoken promising life

Not everything God told Moses is the old covenant-no scriptures states this and it would essentially wipe out most of the New Testament and the greatest commandments Lev 19:18 Deut 6:5 and many teachings of the apostles and Jesus because both Jesus and the apostles taught on the Old Testament , it would make Jesus teachings of no effect like Mark 8:7-13 and He tells us to live by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God Mat 4:4, so for me I will choose His teachings over mans.

The book of the covenant is what was outside the Ark, not the Ten Commandments Deut 31:26, the Ten Commandments is placed inside the ark of the Covenant Exo 40:20 and it is what defines sin even in the NC as stated clearly Rom 7:7as it will be what all man is judged by James 2:10-12 Mat 5:19-30 Ecc 12:13-14, Rev 22:14-15

the Ten Commandments is placed inside the ark of the Covenant Exo 40:20
But you are totally ignoring what the New Covenant says, and that's why you are stuck in your errors: For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: (Heb 8:10).

Now is there a HUGE DIFFERENCE between tablets of stone and the "tablets" of hearts and minds? This was only possible because of the finished work of Christ, the gift of the Holy Spirit, the New Birth, and the indwelling Holy Spirit. So you need to read, study, and digest 2 Corinthians 3:1-18.

Didn't miss it at all, its the very essence of God doing. It went from tablets of stone to tablets of the heart. In God doing, He placed His law (note He didn't say new laws) right on the heart -right where sin begins and Jesus further explained what this means quoting from the Ten Commandments telling us not to break or teach others to break the very least of these. Mat 5:19-30

From your replies I got and reading scripture, I now have a better understanding of the differences and I would like to tank everyone who replied, be blessed and sorry for the delay.

In the New Testament, particularly in the teachings of Jesus the differences between the Old and New Covenants are highlighted in various ways:

Authority and Fulfillment: Jesus frequently speaks of fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies and laws rather than abolishing them. He asserts his authority as the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets (Mat 5:17). While the Old Covenant was based on obedience to the Mosaic Law, the New Covenant is fulfilled through faith in Jesus Christ and his teachings.

Focus on the Heart : Jesus emphasizes the importance of inner righteousness rather than merely outward observance of the law. He teaches that it's not just about following the letter of the law but also about the attitudes and intentions of the heart (Mat 5:21-48). The New Covenant brings a deeper spiritual dimension, focusing on love, mercy, and forgiveness.

Access to God : In the Old Covenant, access to God was primarily through the temple, priesthood, and sacrificial system. However, in the New Covenant, Jesus becomes the ultimate High Priest who offers himself as the perfect sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. Through Jesus, believers have direct access to God without the need for intermediaries (Heb 9:11-14, John 17:20-23).

Universal Reach : While the Old Covenant was primarily for the nation of Israel, the New Covenant extends to all peoples. Jesus commissions his disciples to go and make disciples of all nations (Mat 28:19-20), emphasizing the universal scope of the Gospel message.

Spiritual Empowerment : In the Old Covenant, the Holy Spirit came upon certain individuals for specific tasks, but in the New Covenant, the Holy Spirit is poured out on all believers. Jesus promises the Holy Spirit as a guide, comforter, and source of power to empower believers to live according to God's will (John 14:16-17; Acts 2:1-4).

Permanence and Superiority : The New Covenant is described as superior to the Old Covenant (Jer 31:31-34). It is characterized by permanence, as it is based on the unchanging promises of God and the finished work of Jesus Christ. While the Old Covenant was temporary and pointed forward to the coming of Christ, the New Covenant is everlasting and brings ultimate reconciliation between God and humanity.

These differences highlight the transformative nature of the New Covenant, which brings about a deeper relationship with God and a greater emphasis on faith, and spiritual renewal.

Be blessed everyone.

Hi there! :)

Keep in mind Jesus is all throughout the OT and NT

1 Cor 1:16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.

Jesus came to reconcile man as sin is what separated us Isa 59:2 sin is breaking God’s law 1 John 3:4, the Ten Commandments Mat 5:19-30 Rom 7:7 and anything that is not of faith.

God’s Spirit has always been available even in the OC. Psalm 51:11 Isaiah 63:10 etc.

The Spirit is given to convict us of sin John 18:6 and bring us out of rebellion if we have not harden our hearts and hear His voice calling us Heb 3:7-8 and given to help us obey God’s commandments John 14:15-18 and given to those who obey Acts 5:32 i.e. have Christ living in us. The law just shows us our sins Rom 3:20 and points us to the solution- which is Jesus Christ Prov 28:13 1 Peter 1:9

Also there are two covenants. The old covenant that was not superior was the covenant of the Levitical priesthood and the animal sacrifices as it was added because of sin, not the covenant of the Ten Commandments that is perfect for converting the soul. Psa 19:7 and is holy and righteous and Truth Rom 7:12, Psa 119:142, Psa 119:105, Psa 119:172.

The New Covenant is better because it has God doing Heb 8:6 Heb 8:10 and Jesus is now our High Priest, Mediator and Advocate. Instead of animal sacrifices for sins as that was always a placeholder pointing forward to Jesus Heb 10:1-22 1 Cor 5:7, we can go straight to Jesus when we sin and have a change of heart and repent- 1 Peter 1:9 Jesus is the one doing now, we just need to cooperate with Him and through Him, if we have a right relationship with Him we can keep His commandments as He imputes His righteousness and He kept all of them John 15:10 as our example to follow 1 John 2:6. Jesus leads by example and He is the WAY.

God bless!

Faith and obedience are found in both the Old and New Testaments.
Grace, and God's commands are found in both the Old and New Testaments.
The differences between the Old and the New Covenants are in the fact that:

(a) The Messiah (Jesus) was revealed in the New Testament, and:
(b) We are under the Laws of Christ, and we are not under the 613 Laws of Moses (as a whole or package deal even though certain laws have been repeated or carried over into the New Covenant).

Most Christians think today that all you have to do is believe in Jesus and that's the primary concern to enter the Kingdom. But nothing could be further from the truth. Just read your New Testament and you will see lots of other requirements that have nothing to do with the Old Law or Easy Believism.

The word "Christian" actually means Christ follower.

Please try reading Galatians 6:8-9, Romans 8:13, 1 Timothy 5:8, Titus 1:16, Romans 2:5-13, 2 Thessalonians 2:13, 2 Corinthians 7:1, 1 Timothy 6:3-4, Luke 10:25-28, etcetera.

Paul said, "To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law." (1 Corinthians 9:21).

Titus 2:11-12
"For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; "
