Not sure the drinking age where you live either. Here in the US anyone under 21 is not allowed to drink. So technically speaking, a 17 year old is breaking the law, which the bible says we are to obey the laws of the land, therefore it would be wrong.
Also, tipsy is just a little drunk.. how about a little premarital sex? how many other sins can you add 'just a little' and it still be ok?

Well there aren't gradual levels of premarital sex, you either did it or you didn't. Alcohol is different than that, tipsy means the alcohol has started to have an effect, not that your drunk. Heck, one beer or one glass of whiskey will get you a little drunk the way you define it.

You're only 17 so technically its illegal. But hey ho, we all do it.

Of course a couple of drinks socially is fine - Jesus gave out wine didn't he?

But just be on your guard that peer pressure or boredom doesnt make it into too much of a habit ("She was just a social drinker but social every night!" - The Beautiful South)

A friend of mine's father was a methodist minister and he was raised very strictly in these matters but he allways resented it. when he was 18 and left hoem for university, he was free to start drinking but because he had never applied self-restraint it quickly got out of control.

Recognise that it is your responsibility to look after your own health - so yes, have a couple of pints on a Friday night but keep it sensible.

I understand your question I would like to point out a scripture
Matthew 15:10-11 HCSB (Scofield Study Bible)
"Summoning the crowd, He told them, Listen and understand: It's not what goes into the mouth of a man that defiles a man, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man"
Now by no means should you use this scripture to indulge in immorality and sinfulness. But for someone to say drinking is a sin is a bit of a stretch. I understand why people say that because drinking does and will led to other problems. But me myself I drink on occasion and sometimes even on the true sabbath friday evening to saturday evening not because of law or redemption or anything like that. But because i wanna know God Jesus, I want to truly know him not some idea or asumption I want to know him and He did many things which the scribes and pharisees of his time considered an abomination.
So obviously there is somethings we really don't understand. God tells you to worship him with thanksgiving in your heart. To remember the Sabbath to keep it holy. That the Sabbath is a day of rest. I am not saying ya have to do this or do that to be saved. But what better way to rest then drink a beer or wine. So I think the key my friend is if you are convicted of sin change. I say praise the Lord with your whole heart hold nothing back from him. For truly He will lead you through the valley of death and annoint you with oil. And Goodness and mercy shall follow you all the days of your life.
Psalm 23 Praise God!

Go ahead and drink. I know several people within the church that will sometimes go out and grab a couple of beers together. I'm going out drinking tonight. Cheers!
I know several people that deny the Creation, that do not believe the Bible is True and Gods Word, they do not believe in the deity of Christ, yet they go to Church sometimes and they go to bars sometimes as well and let there flesh walk them around all day like a 5 year old trying to walk a golden retriever on a leash.

I'm tired of hearing sin called sickness and alcoholism a disease. It is the only disease I know of that we're spending hundreds of millions of dollars a year to spread. *

I agree in general - its not really a disease.

But some people do have addictive personalities. Think about all those in your workplace who say (proudly?) "I cant function until I've had 2 coffees"

What a stupid thing to say. If they said "I cant function until I've had 3 beers" we would all be shocked.

Caffeine and alcohol are both addictive. Why is one acceptable and the other not? True, caffeine addiction does not land people in court for violent behviour but they are both abuses of our bodies.

Also there is a direct correlation between those who are addicted to caffeine and those who smoke.

but your right - its not a disease, its an addiction that people are too weak to do anything about

It is ironic that we would have to discuss such things as the smaller nuances of the Christian life and try to talk people into letting God have his way in areas like drinking, dress, music, movies, etc... (If the Cross was not enough)... If you put yourself at the hillside of Golgotha and you are looking at Almighty God, spilling his Royal Red Blood for you on the Cross. It's really a shame that we would have to bicker and rationalize with God over our petty preferences... No area of life should be exempt from Biblical principles or from Glorifying God. So the next time you crack open a cold one at the local bar as you sit among the scornful and stand in the way of sinners, just understand that your so called Faith and what you say you believe is nothing but a joke to those people your with.

I heard of a brother who claimed to long having been a teetotaller, but some doubted. When he was asked how long he had been an abstainer, he replied, “Off and on for twenty years.” You should have seen the significant smile upon all faces. An abstainer off and on! His example did not stand for much. Certain professors are Christians off and on, and nobody respects them. - Charles Spurgeon

Just as Paul had stated in Romans 13, we are to obey the laws of the land.

8Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. 9For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
10Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
11And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
12The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
13Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
14But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Although drinking is not necessarily a sin, it is still wrong if you are underage.

Jesus turned water into wine because he was at a wedding that had run out of wine. Wine was apart of the tradition, and quite a "big deal" to run out of/have.

that only counts if having a glass of win is a sin in the first place. which it isnt.
It's only sinful if you drink beer afterwards. Vice versa is okay though.

Beer and wine is fine, wine and beer is queer.

Thats a good one. What I've always heard is:

Beer before liquor never sicker, liquor before beer never fear.

If Jesus refused to drink wine, then I believe that I should also refuse it.

Mark 15:23

"then they gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did not take it."
He refused it to fufill prophesy. Also, do you not eat because Jesus fasted in the desert for 40 days? But we know he ate food obviously. We know that Jesus chose not to drink once. This does not mean he didn't drink at all.

I would say its not about "how much is too much" or "how far can i go?" Especially with pre-marital sex. Its like saying lets see how close we can get to the edge of this cliff. It makes more sense to just stay away. Obviously its important to know boundaries but be careful so you're not pushing it to see what you can get away with. Your soul is not worth it. That's my take on it.

The problem with alcohol is it's the oldest (GATEWAY DRUG) known to man the first alcohol's are generally considered to be medes and such (fermented honey) even before wine or beer.

Here's the problem overdrinking will always lead to 1 or more of 6 conclusions.
1 intoxication leading to vomiting
2 intoxication leading to sexual promiscuity and possible side effects stds etc.
3 intoxication leading to injury (major wipeout down a flight of stairs)
4 intoxication leading to death (you and your buddies driving home impaired and get in an accident causing death)
5 intoxication leading to other types of intoxication (drugs)
6 intoxication leading to alcoholism (very bad trust me)

And yes Jesus would view drunkeness as bad his own words say so
  1. Luke 21:34 (Whole Chapter)
And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.
