With this statement, a candidate is baptized and welcomed as a new member of the body of Christ. The phrase taken from Matthew 28:19 followed Jesus' command to baptize all nations. But is this phrase really the saying of Jesus? Or was the scripture altered during the third century to support the development of the doctrine of the trinity?

Since the concession that 1 John 5:7 is spurious, only Matthew 28:19 remains as a scriptural support for the triune name. That is why the triple formula, “father, son and holy spirit:' formed the framework of the Apostles' Creed. Oxford scholar Moberly (1902) claimed Matthew 28:19 to be a “solemn precept to baptize in the name of the holy Trinity, which fell from the divine lips of the newly risen Lord”

Because this scripture is important to the trinitarian belief, there has been little interest in pursuing its authenticity. Yet some scholars of the 19th and 20th centuries believe the scripture was altered. James Martineau, in Seat of Authority, says that the “very account which tells us that at last, after his resurrection, he commissioned his apostles to go and baptize all nations, betrays itself by speaking in the Trinitarian language of the next century and compels us to see in it the ecclesiastical editor.”

In History of Dogma, Adolph Harnack claims Matthew 28:19 is “no word of the Lord” Even the cautious critic Canon Armitage Robinson, in Encyclopedia Biblica, says that Matthew “does not here report the (very words) of Jesus, but transfers to him the familiar language of the church of the Evangelist's own time and locality.”

There are early church writers who also seem to support these views. Eusebius, a fourth century writer, had the greatest library of any early church scribe. It contained manuscripts of the new testament that were at least 200 years older than any existing today. Manuscripts copied by Origen, Clement of Alexandria, and others not available today gave him access to almost original material. Eusebius cites Matthew 28:19 eighteen times in his work, always in the same form: “Go ye and make disciples of all nations in my name, teaching them to observe all things, whatsoever I commanded you”

When he comments on the verse, Eusebius places great stress on the phrase, “in my name.” Apparently his sources, Origen, Clement and Justin Martyr, excluded “father” and “holy spirit” from this scripture.

Justin Martyr wrote between 130 A.D. and 140 A.D. While much of his work is no longer available, there is a passage that is generally thought to be a reference to Matthew 28:19:

“God hath not yet inflicted nor inflicts the judgment, as knowing of some that still even today ARE BEING MADE DISCIPLES IN THE NAME OF HIS CHRIST, and are abandoning the path of error, who also do receive gifts each as they be worthy, being illumined by the name of this Christ.”

Aphraates, a Syriac writer of the middle-fourth century, cites the text in yet a different manner, “Make disciples of all nations, and they shall believe in me.”

It probably was not until the middle of the third century that the current rendering of Matthew 28:19 appeared when Bishop Cyprian of Rome insisted on the triple formula for baptism. Ironically, Pope Stephen used only one name, Jesus.

During the fourth century, the orthodox church used the phrase, “in the name of the father, son and holy ghost” as a battle cry against the Macedonians who claimed that no new testament text supported the spirit as part of the trinity. However, by the seventh century the church had wholeheartedly accepted the current rendering of the scripture, and excommunicated the Celtic church for insisting on one name in baptism.

In 1902, the modern scholar F.C. Conybeare summed up the history of the development of Matthew 28:19 as follows: “It is worth considering, however, whether the original text of the gospel did not end at the word 'nations,' and whether the three rival endings of the text were not developed independently, viz: (i) 'in my name' in Justin, Eusebius, and perhaps Stephen of Rome and the Pneumato-machi (ii) (iii) 'and they shall believe in me, in Aphraates, representing the older Syriac version 'baptising them in the name of the Father, the Son and the holy Ghost; or similar in the Greek gnostic Theodotus, Ter-tullian Latin version of Irenaeus, and the surviving Greek MSS.”

There are four instances of baptism by the Apostles recorded in the book of Acts. In each instance, only the name of Jesus is used in connection with the baptism.

Acts 2:38. Peter's sermon on the day of Pentecost was followed by a call to those who would become followers of Jesus: “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST so that your sins may be forgiven. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (NIV)

Acts 8:16. Philip preached throughout Samaria and gained several converts. However, when Peter and John arrived, those converts had not received the gifts of the spirit that normally accompanied conversion in those days. They then laid their hands upon them, “because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized INTO THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS” (NIV)

Acts 10:48. Cornelius, the first Gentile convert, was baptized after a lengthy conversation with Peter: “So he ordered that they be baptized IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST.” (NIV)

Acts 19:5. Paul's initial encounter with the brethren at Ephesus caused him concern as they had been baptized by Apollos with John's baptism. He instructed them regarding Jesus: “On hearing this, they were baptized INTO THE NAME OF THE LORD JESUS” (NIV)

It is only recently that the authenticity of Matthew 28:19 has come into doubt. As Bible students, we should always examine the translations carefully to assure that we are following the original texts as closely as possible. When dealing with subjects like the trinity, this has especially been true. Although Matthew 28:19 has not yet been agreed upon by a majority of scholars as spurious, there is certainly enough evidence to limit its use. At least it would be wise to consider it inappropriate for use in baptism, given its questionable history and subtle support of the doctrine of the trinity.

Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

These are not names but titles, and the name is singular.

Isa 52:5 Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is blasphemed.
Isa 52:6 Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.

Joh 14:8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
Joh 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
Joh 14:10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

Joh 5:43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

The name of the Father is Jesus.

Mat 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Heb 1:4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

The Son inherited the name Jesus from the Father.

Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

The Holy Ghost comes in the name of Jesus.

Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Act 2:39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Jews were told to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and the promise was to those afar off.

Act 8:15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
Act 8:16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
Act 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

Samaritans were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Act 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
Act 10:48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

Gentiles were baptized in the name of the Lord who is Jesus.

Act 19:3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
Act 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
Act 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Gentiles that were baptized with John's baptism were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Col 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

Everything we do in word or deed we do in the name of Jesus so why would we baptize in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Jesus is the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

This cannot be denied because scriptures declare it.

If there is a trinity they would all have the name Jesus but I believe in one God with no distinction of persons.

There is one God who is a Holy Spirit, and Father is a title, and the Son is the man Christ Jesus.

Not 3 persons in one God but the 3 relationships He has with His children designated by titles.

Father- Creator and parent of the saints.

Son- God's visible relationship to the saints.

Holy Spirit- God's invisible relationship to the saints.

Adam created in the image of God.

In the New Testament Adam created in the figure of Christ.

The image of God is the image of Christ.

God had the plan to come in the future in flesh and created Adam in that image an innocent nature in flesh.

So the let us make man in our image has to include the man Christ Jesus for He is part of that image.

I believe it is not speaking of a trinity but the Father, and the Son, the man Christ Jesus.

A prophetic statement to the coming of Jesus.

Jesus is at the right hand of God.

God's right hand represents power, wisdom, and salvation.

Jesus said all power is given to Him in heaven and earth.

There is one God, and one mediator between God and men the man Christ Jesus.

David said the LORD said unto my Lord sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.

For the Son must reign until His enemies are conquered, and then the Son shall submit to the Father that He may be all in all.

There is one throne in heaven and one who sits on that throne which is the throne of God and the Lamb, God in the glorified body of the man Christ Jesus.

I believe that God exalted the man Christ Jesus to exercise the throne of power because He is the mediator, until His enemies are conquered, and then He will submit to God that He may be all in all.

I believe that is the interpretation of right hand here.

I believe the only person we will see in heaven is Jesus which He told Philip if you have seen me you have seen the Father.

It is obvious when the Roman Empire embraced Christianity that they did not get rid of their pagan, and occult ways, and it became their foundation for the interpreting of scriptures.

The pagan religions have a trinity so they do too.

The pagan religions have a female deity so Mary is the Queen of heaven.

And the practices they do that are not required when the Bible says love is the fulfilling of the law.

That may be so, but the FACT remains that Christians from the 1st century to the present have baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And will continue to do so.

Just because a few unbelieving people question this verse means nothing. So if you are trying to minimize the importance of this verse, you are simply siding with unbelievers. Heretics have been attacking Bible verses for a very long time.

I had to stop reading when this one poster claimed "Jesus" is the name of the Father.... Yikes.

Its the "Jesus' name only" movement.

This seems like a weird discussion, But then i myself am weird. here is my 2 cents and my understanding. of this and i believe this with every fiber of my being. ok here it goes.
the Holy Spirit is the father, The invisible God, The bright lite no man can look at, Althogh Moses tried it and it aged him a 100 years, These are offices. and the trifecta has to be involved. This follows the principle of the theroy to be an isrealite you have to be a decentant or son of Abraham, Isacc, And jacob. Example: Ishmeal, Decendant of Abraham but not an israelite.

Take this same theroy and apply it towards the Trinity. This is the Principle,
The Father = Holy Spirit, Housed or contained in the embodyment of Melchezedek Heb 7: 1, The Angel of God. But same individual. The The embodyment of Melchezedek was given up to become flesh, Hince Jusus Christ was born. All 3 still same individual. Peope were baptised by John the Baptist. In the name of Jesus. But John was supposed only Babtise Jesus Christ, so Jusus could be blessed by the father, AKA the Holy Spirit. No one else could recieve the Holy Spirit until after Christ died on the cross, All though john tried it. I know this is just word ology, but it rings true in my mind and Heart. After Jesus Christ Died on the cross then rose from the grave He is now refered to as Christ Jesus. And Christ Jesus is the embodiment of the father, AKA the Holy Spirit. And Jesus Chrst is the Descendant of God. Son means descendant. So to me he is the Trinity = The Holy Spirit, the father in the embodimentd of his son Jesus Christ, Who then Died and became Christ Jesus. So that now we the human race can recieve the Holy Ghost through Baptism for the remmission of sin. Even the Kenites. That maybe more info than you wanted.

What is your interpretation of 1 John 5:7 in the context of what has been said in the first 2 posts?
1 John 5:7 reads "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one."

In case you weren't aware. this verse is spurious, meaning it doesn't exist in the earliest manuscripts. Do some research and you will find that the correct translation of this verse is "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." Most translations render it this way.

That is true, BUT ... studies in the scriptures is of utmost importance in "making sure of all things."
I find it best to keep it simple, as simple as the Gospel message. Not all Believers have access to Bibles, but if they do they should definitely read and study and read and study some more. But complicating simple things when it comes to our beliefs is never helpful.

...given its questionable history and subtle support of the doctrine of the trinity.
Questionable history? Are you serious? That is just FAKE NEWS cooked up by Anti-Trinitarians. And not "subtle" but CLEAR support of the Trinity. So you are very seriously mistaken, and you need to give up that false notion.

Now take a look at this. The Critical Text and the Received Text show this verse as Scripture.
CRITICAL TEXT

No I am calling you unbelieving. We do not know why the complete statement was omitted in Acts , but we do know that the Didache (2nd century) and Justin Martyr (2nd century) both included Matthew 28:19. And as I posted above NOT A SINGLE Greek text or English translation questions its authenticity.

I believe the basis for the doctrine of the trinity got its start in Genesis.

Genesis 1:1 - "In the beginning God . . ." - [אֱלֹהִ֑ים] Elohim (plural) - three or more.
Genesus 1:26 - "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:"

Matthew 28:19 - ". . . baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost."

While Jesus gave verbal commandment (above) concerning the work of the church (second part of 'The Great Commission'), below are verses in which the phrase "in the name of" is NOT referring to that which the speaker (or baptizer) is to SAY, but is a reference to the AUTHORITY by which he speaks (or baptizes). They were to speak or baptize by His
Authority. For example, the king's scribes wrote according to Haman's command, ". . . in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written, and sealed with the king's ring." (Esther 3:12)

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 4:18 And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.

Acts 5:40 And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

Acts 8:16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

Acts 9:27 But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.

Acts 9:29 And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay him.

Acts 16:18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

Acts 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

1 Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Ephesians 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Colossians 3:17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

2 Thessalonians 3:6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us.

And denying the Trinity?

. Although Matthew 28:19 has not yet been agreed upon by a majority of scholars as spurious, there is certainly enough evidence to limit its use. At least it would be wise to consider it inappropriate for use in baptism, given its questionable history and subtle support of the doctrine of the trinity.

Questioning that the person posing this was denying the trinity.
