Matthew 1:1 The book of the genealogy[a] of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:

The covenant made by God to both David and Abraham applies to the nation of Israel. Whereas the covenant made by the Son of David and the Son of Abraham is the covenant made with Christians.

So from the first verse we see how both the Old and New Testaments are intertwined in Matthew. This focus is essentially non existent in Mark and Luke. Mark begins with John the Baptist calling people to repent and Luke begins with the birth of Jesus. However, the way in which the two covenants are intertwined is explained in Romans which many consider the "Gospel according to Paul".

Now consider

Matthew 23:39 for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”

This is not in Mark.

Now consider the context:

37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! 38 See! Your house is left to you desolate;

This is the conclusion to the woes that Jesus pronounces on the scribes and Pharisees. It is clearly a reference to Israel as a nation and their salvation when Jesus steps down on to Jerusalem and splits the mountain in two.

In Luke the difference is incredibly subtle, almost imperceptible.

Luke 13:34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing! 35 See! Your house is left to you desolate; and [k]assuredly, I say to you, you shall not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ ”

In Luke they have not seen Him yet because Luke is to those who are raptured prior to the hour of trial, in Matthew they have seen Him, but "no more". Therefore in Matthew it is after the two witnesses are killed and the whole world sees them taken up. That marks the official end of the salvation of Christians. From that point you will not see Jesus and the resurrection any more until the Jews say blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord. Mark is to those who are left behind in the tribulation so neither of these would apply, the rapture did take place where many Jews if not all would have seen, and the two witnesses have not yet been raptured.

Matthew 27:3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. 5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. 6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. 7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. 8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. 9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; 10 And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.

Judas is the false prophet and in Revelation there will also be a false prophet. Because he comes from the land and looks like a lamb it is understood that the false prophet during the tribulation is Jewish. Notice how the only gospel that records the death of Judas is Matthew. That makes sense if Luke is written to those raptured prior to the hour of trial, and Mark is for the left behind saints. In neither of those cases would the false prophet kill himself yet.

On the other hand only Luke has this account:

Luke 22:35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. 36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. 37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. 38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

This is describing the difference for Christians preaching the gospel before the rapture and after the rapture.

In contrast to Matthew and Luke there is almost nothing in the Gospel of Mark that is unique to Mark. However, here is one of the very few things that is unique to Mark:

Mark 16:14 Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

This would make sense if the Lord were speaking to those left behind after the rapture.

compare this word by Jesus in all three synoptic gospels

Matthew 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

Mark 13:6 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

These two are identical.

Luke 21:8b for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.

Only Luke says this. No one will be trying to deceive people that "the time draweth near" after the rapture. This shows you that Luke is to those who are raptured prior to the "hour of trial".

Luke 17:29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

Only Luke has this. I believe this is a reference to the destruction of Mystery, Babylon the Great. I believe this event will be what kicks off the "hour of trial" which is to come upon the whole earth. I think this is a direct reference to the rapture before the hour of trial, as they go up, the fire comes down.

compare this with the word where Jesus told the disciples that Elijah had come first, referring to John the Baptist. That is only in Matthew and Mark and is not in Luke. Again, this makes sense since Luke is written to those who are taken prior to the hour of trial, which includes the Antichrist, the false prophet and the two witnesses.

Only in Luke does Jesus say this

Luke 19:41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, 42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. 43 For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, 44 And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

The time of thy visitation refers to the rapture before the hour of trial. Those in Matthew and Mark didn't know, which is why they go through that trial.

Matthew 2:13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. 14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: 15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son. 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, 18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. 19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life. 21 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

This account is only in Matthew. Think of how nicely this correlates with Israel returning to the land in 1948 after the Holocaust and after the defeat of Nazi Germany. This supports the idea that Matthew was written to the Nation of Israel which will be saved at the end of the tribulation as a nation.

Luke 6:24 But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. 25 Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. 26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

This verse is only in Luke and it only makes sense prior to the 7 year tribulation. There is no point in saying this to those left behind after the rapture just as there would be no point telling this to Jews in Auschwitz.

Matthew 13:51 Jesus saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea, Lord. 52 Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

This verse is only in Matthew and that is significant to its meaning. Don't think this applies to someone who is a philosopher among the nations or someone who was a pagan or knows the deep things of Satan. The apostle Paul is the best example of what this verse means. I have seen people try to apply their secular knowledge to the spirit, like an accountant trying to help with the gospel, or comedians trying to improve the preaching of sermons, or satanists trying to help people with prayer. All of that stuff is "strange fire" and is condemned.

Luke 21:34 And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. 35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

This is only in Luke, further proof that this gospel is to those taken prior to the rapture. If you are left behind after the rapture it is pointless to pray that you would be worthy of escape. You missed it. Also, the day did come upon you unawares.

1 Timothy 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,

This is the first charge, to not teach any other doctrine other than the fellowship of the apostles.

4 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.

This is the second charge. The story of Santa Claus is a fable. It is a short story that includes flying reindeer and elves, with a moral (Santa is watching so you have to be good or else you will get coal in your stocking). The Easter bunny is a fable. How the Grinch stole Christmas is a fable. The world is filled with fables, they are not part of the Bible. You don't need to condemn these stories, simply don't give heed to them. This word for "take heed" is the same word that is translated "beware" in Matthew 7:15 Beware G4337 of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Every book in the New Testament has seven words that are unique to it and are not used anywhere else in the New Testament. This word "endless" is one of those seven words unique to 1 Timothy so we should realize it is part of the unique burden of this book. In order to prove you were a priest you had to show that your genealogy tied you to the priesthood. Genealogies were critical to the Jews because your inheritance was based on your genealogy and your claim to an inheritance was based on your genealogy. This has been fully done away with in the New Testament. What is critical is when you get saved you get the genealogy of Jesus. This means Jesus is the end of our genealogies!

5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:

So this is a completely different viewpoint. If you aren't clear simply check are you expressing love out of a pure heart? Do you have a good conscience in what you are doing? Is this faith unfeigned?

6 From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;

Vain jangling is another unique words to 1 Timothy. It refers to empty talk.

7 Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.

There is a progression here. Once you leave the fellowship of the apostles you can then get to fables and then you start depending on your resume, your "endless genealogies" to get the clergy. You are no longer going to God for the word but a man. You aren't listening to your conscience, you aren't walking by faith, your heart is not pure, and your love is self serving. You have completely left the narrow path and have swerved into "vain jangling". Maybe you are talking about politics, maybe you are talking about philosophy, maybe you are talking about all kinds of things, but it is all vain, it is all simply "jangling".

1 Timothy 4:12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.

The word of God is balanced. The presbytery is a body of elders. So at the start Paul says "let no one despise thy youth" and in the end the gift is given by both prophecy and the laying on of hands of the body of elders.

We can illustrate this with Tom Brady. He famously prophesied when he was first drafted that Kraft would view him as the best decision they ever made. He was despised for much of his career which is why he was drafted so late, and why he was paid so little, and why many people hated him. But in the end even his greatest detractors had to admit that you cannot despise him and calling him the greatest quarterback ever was impossible to refute.

Have you been faithfully married to the Lord Jesus?

Have you been well reported of for good works?

Did you help with the children's ministry?

Did you have fellowship with saints that were visiting?

Did you minister to the saints?

Did you help with the soup kitchen?

Did you diligently follow the good works of various evangelistic ministries?

We are not saved by good works, but the good works are evidence of our faith in Jesus. You are standing at the throne, you claim you have faith in Jesus, OK, but what evidence do you have from your life that this is true?

Promised Rest

Hebrews 4:1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

There will be very many Christians who come short of the promised rest of the rapture. If that were not true then there would be no reason for us to fear that we might come short of this promised rest.

2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

Simply going to church is no guarantee. Just because you listen to the word preached to you doesn't mean that the word is mixed with faith, and if it isn't mixed with faith then the word does not profit you.

3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

So it is very clear that those who believe enter in while those who don't believe do not.

Key principles for entering in:

Matthew 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus Christ is our righteousness. If you are not standing on the blood of Jesus you will not enter in.

Matthew 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

The rapture before the hour of trial is a reward. You must have a personal relationship with the Lord that the world does not know about.

Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

The rapture before the hour of trial is a narrow gate. Do not think that since everyone is saying or doing something that you can simply follow the crowd. If you are taking the path of least resistance you are not on the narrow path, if you are on a path that is very crowded with many, many others then you are not on the narrow path.

Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

I also love Romans 10, whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. But no verse is of its own interpretation. Some who are saved are raptured before the hour of trial, but most who are saved are saved out of the fiery trial of the tribulation. Simply saying "Lord, lord" is no guarantee of escaping the trial that is to come.

Luke 11:52 Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.

No one is saying "woe to those who teach the pre-trib doctrine or the mid-trib or the post-trib. What your opinion is about eschatology does not cause you to receive woe. No, it is when you impose your beliefs and hinder those who are trying to know the truth that woe comes upon you. A lawyers job is not to find the truth, rather it is to sell his interpretation of the events to the jury. The idea is if the two lawyers are evenly matched then the adversarial process will lead to the truth. But, when the lawyer takes away the key of knowledge, hiding relevant facts from the jury, then they have crossed a line. For example there was a brother who strongly believes there is no pre-trib rapture. Just because he feels that way and teaches that way does not cross a line. However, he then began to distort what others said and taught because it did not fit his doctrine. That does cross the line.

Luke 18:17 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.

Imagine you are at church with over 200 people. A member of the worship team is sitting by the piano and says that she will be giving piano lessons to any who wants to learn the piano. Immediately a hand shoots up from a six year old child. That is what the Lord is talking about here. When the Lord speaks we need to be like the six year old child "I want to learn! I want to do that!"

Luke 18:24 And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

How many times when you preach the gospel in the street do you hear "No thanks, I'm fine" or "No thanks, I'm good". Street ministry is always in the poor neighborhoods and the homeless encampments because there people are desperate. They aren't rich. If you go to a rich neighborhood no one is on the street. They drive home, pull into the driveway and step into their house. This is how we came to the Lord, we knew we needed something. That is how we need to be all the time, once we are "set, settled and occupied" that is when we fall into temptation.

Luke 22:40 And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

Either you enter into the Lord's rest or you will enter into temptation.

Luke 24:26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

The Christians who don't enter in, who do not mix the word with faith, they see the sufferings and choose not to take that path. The reason none of the adults raised the hand to learn the piano is they saw how much work it would be. The reason people take the broad way that leads to destruction is because it is the easy way.

Two Key Points

Hebrews 4:4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. 5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

Clearly God has a rest and not everyone will enter into it. This is the problem with the Pre-trib and Post-trib debate. You have to recognize that God does have a rest and not all will enter in, but some will.

6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: 7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

Those who don't enter in, it is because of unbelief and because they have hardened their heart.

8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

Obviously this is not simply talking about Israel, but even more about believers in the New Testament.

9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

This is one key point. Yes, there is a rapture, there remains a rest to the people of God

10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

Two key points, there is a rapture, a rest to the people of God and not all will enter in but some due to unbelief will harden their hearts.

Let us labor to enter in

Hebrews 4:11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

The Bible is balanced. We are not saved because of our works, we are saved because of the work that Jesus did on the cross for us. Because he fulfilled the work of redemption He was able to enter into His rest. But just because we are not saved by works does not mean there are no works for us to do and that we must complete them before we can enter into our rest. Imagine you are a child of the king. It was nothing that you did that caused you to be the child of the king. But, now that you are a child of the king you have a high calling that you must fulfill.

12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The only way we will fulfill our high calling is by being filled with the word of God. Imagine your career requires a certain degree, certain certifications, certain requirements. The only way you will complete that degree and pass those certification requirements is if you are filled with the word.

The only way you can be filled with the word is if you not only listen to it, but also obey it.
