In 1 Corinthians 7:10 we find that Paul says he is passing on a command or teaching from the Lord, and two verses later he says his instruction is his own opinion rather than the Lord's teaching, which he says again in v.25.

In 9:19-23 (paraphrased) Paul says that he makes himself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews... To those not having the law I became like one not having the law, so as to win those not having the law... I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some.

Perhaps these passages indicate that outward appearance is not critical, but one's motivation for doing something, such as a man having long hair and a woman having short hair.

In 8:9 Paul says to be careful that the exercise of our freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak, apparently meaning that we should try not to be a means of tempting someone to sin against their conscience. One application I can think of is that when we go someplace with a recovering alcoholic we should not imbibe in such drinks.

Timothy....women are to dress modestly and decently. The modest dress is not the same as decent.

IOW do not come looking like a prostitute, a slob, or in a $10,000 dress.

Paul says it. And he admonishes the men to do the same thing. I'm drawing a blank as to where at the moment.
The way I always understood that one is that by modest it means, tidy and decent(not revealing or unkept), with propriety and moderation, meaning not to overdo it. Kinda leaves it blank as far as to what from the attire is to take. I was kinda hoping there would be something more direct about attire in our daily lives outside of worship, then I could establish whether we should change our attire at church, or just dress like you normally will. I personally don't think it's a big issue either way.

Correct,
The rule is "no codified rules".

Can anyone point out where in the bible, we're expected to present ourselves as "normal for our culture."? all I can find is are verses that seem to say the opposite like "be not conformed to the ways of the world", but none that refer to physical appearances.
Romans 12:2.

The Bible reveals that God’s main concern is inner moral character, but weird outward appearance may manifest inward mental illness.

Well, what about John the Baptist? He didn't dress and eat the same as anybody else?

And some of the prophets were told by God to do or wear some strange things.

If you dress like John the Baptist then I worry about your mental case!

Puritans can be such snowflakes over the most un-important stuff, they see their culture how they want to see it and expect people to conform to that image. They ignore the gay pride, the gender changing of minors, the letting out of rapists and all the evil crap our culture is normalizing. But boy if someone at church has long hair or wears a kilt he's out of line.
I got married in a kilt.
Oh dear.

My granny was from the Innes clan.
Do you have an affiliation to Scotland.
I was born in Glasgow (Gorbals) but moved to England when I was 5.

There is evidence that Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 11 are based on the erroneous anatomical beliefs of the day. It was believed that a woman's hair had a role in her physical sexual processes. "Does not nature itself teach you..." would therefore be 1st-century misunderstanding of "nature" and essentially a local/cultural issue rather than an enduring ecclesial matter.

Credit to the late Dr. Michael Heiser for this information.
yes, this information definitely came from a man and not from God. Paul says in the same book that the things he teaches in the church at Corinth are THE SAME THINGS he teaches in ALL THE CHURCHES. 1 Cor. 4:17; and 1Cor. 14:37-“…the things that I write to you are the COMMANDMENTS OF THE LORD.” Listen to God, not to men.

Matthew 3:

4 And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

Unless that is how everyone else dressed - and, what they ate...

It's good that you take that seriously, but I was asking the other guy because he thinks if a person dresses oddly that it may be a sign that they have some "inward mental illness". I was wondering if he thought John the Baptist had mental illness then.
